Google's move may cut off users from some key services offered by the company. ChinaTechNews lists key things they'll miss about Google in China, including Google's Chinese-language map service, Chinese-language news search, and AdSense advertising platform. Google's departure may also mean China's netizens have even less access than before to taboo topics screened by government censors. “Google leaving will change a lot. Some things just can’t be found on other search engines,†Chen Weiliang, an information technology engineer told the Financial Times.

Over the years, I have traded with Chinese merchants for a variety of goods. Now, in the era of the Internet in China I have reservations about trading with the country at all. One thing I wonder as to the current squabble with Google, are our American corporations dealing with the executive government or the Red Chinese Army of China. The two appear to be inseparable as to commercial policies. And, should we Americans trade with a military entity that would like to see our economic and political destruction?

Perhaps some of you Chinese trade experts can tell us where the line of demarcation occurs between the Chinese Government and the Red Army of China. Currently, I have trouble distinguishing between the two entities.

The Chinese and US gov'ts should have been listed separately. The US stands to lose a lot; anything which bothers China can provoke more pegging of the yuan. The Chinese gov't however, doesn't stand to lose a damn thing. They gain from this, by having less potential competition for their message and version of reality.

It will be a domino affect...
08:32 AM on 03/26/2010
It won't be.

The whole ordeal doesn't make any financial or common sense. You will see gimmick companies like GoDaddy latching on with minimal "sacrifice" (it is not a pull out ... GoDaddy doesn't have any investment in China but just not supporting their own US market site to register .cn) to gain publicity. But all serious high tech companies (or any serious companies at all) will not make such a "su*i.c*dal" move on global commerce.
08:36 AM on 03/26/2010
If you really want to make financial and common sense, it is most liley Google makes a pact with White House to do such a "scrificial" shot, to gain political cover in US and extends that cover to Europe.

Don't forget, Google has been under great legal stress in both US and Europe lately. It is the equivalent of Microsoft under Clinton time. Remember the time when Bill Gate had a golf outing with Bill Clintion? The outcome was that Bill Clinton was not pleased and subsequently you see huge monopoly law suites going after MS.

Google is doing the preventive work on US government. If China needs to get sacrificed for political cover and allegance, so be it.

Let's not forget why Google decided to leave China. China authorized the hacking of Google's servers. If Google did not take the stand to leave, where would the hacking stop? China was looking at internal dissidents, however, when would they start looking to hack Obama's Twitter feed??? A very smart French boy just did it, and it is not inconceivable cyberspying on ______ (fill in the blank) was on the agenda. Good for Google. For national security reason, for moral reasons, for ethical reasons.

Rather, I will bet on "level" of censorship...

It could be any nationals doing hacking - that is why,

lesson one, NEVER think you have privacy in Cyberspace.
07:59 AM on 03/26/2010
"no privacy in Cyberspace." right!

IT expert can dig out a 256 characters pin number within few hours. They can find you data in your old formatted hard drive, etc. so many magic thing for most of common people.

ETHICS IN BUSINESS: THE FINAL FRONTIER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All these 'business issues' may be a concern ~ however, GOOGLE needs to be applauded for choosing ETHICAL ACTIONS over making another buck!!!!!

This is the only way our world will begin to BE the world we all want to live in. Human rights, Natures' rights, and simply caring about LIFE ~ have been put aside for far too long. We are out of time! . . .We are out of resources! . . .We have been out of respect for the LAWS OF NATURE and the UNIVERSE . . . (which do prevail) . . . for a long, long time!

The only morphogenetic field we need to concern ourselves with ~ is the one we are creating right now. NOW is where the power IS . . . in fact NOW is all that actually exists.

NOW is the time for this kind of ETHICAL CHANGE in the so-called 'business world' . . . which is also the world in which WE LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU GOOGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
08:06 PM on 03/25/2010
Now it's time for Google to stop censorship in the UK, Germany, Japan , Australia, and the US. Or is China the only place where it wants to be ethical?
10:30 PM on 03/25/2010
what is it censoring in these countries?
09:55 AM on 03/26/2010
Do you work for the Chinese government?

Journalists and educators will lose out from Google's exit from China. I should know, since I relied on Google for info when I taught English at (and reported on) a third-tier China city a few years back.

Here's what the NYTImes had to say about the exit in a 3/23 editorial:
... When Google took its search engine into China four years ago, it came under attack from human rights groups. Google countered that it was better for the Chinese to have a censored Google than no Google at all ...
It took four years for Google to acknowledge the flaws in that reasoning ...
Google's departure may have more resonance outside China than within.

I am sitting here thinking that if some of the Chinese people want Google so bad, well, they may have to fight for it. I do not think that the Chinese government as it is now will ever allow free speech or freedom of the press. As crazy as it might seem, China is an incredibly conservative country and the majority of the Chinese people approve of their government. Censorship and all. So those who want Google un-censored will have a fight on their hands.
I feel that somehow the sheer weight of the global digital stream will one day break any dam put up in an effort to tame it. If not, the liberal 20 somethings will be in control in China in 30 or 40 years from now. That may seem a long time to wait for change to us in the west, But in China, that is just down the road....
I think Google's stand is admirable. Tardy, but admirable.
05:56 PM on 03/25/2010
Very sensible comment ..
04:22 PM on 03/25/2010
I'm really glad that Google decided to take a principled stand here. We shouldn't look the other way on the Chinese government's shenanigans simply because it may be profitable to do so. I hope more companies follow suit.

A message for select trolls: although it's impossible to know definitively, I would like to think that my perspective is not somehow a direct product of "propaganda" embedded in me by the American government. I have, in fact, traveled to China, and have close, personal relationships with several Chinese nationals; I can make my own observations, and draw my own conclusions. The Chinese government is a bad force in the world.
05:39 PM on 03/25/2010
In response to your observation that the Chinese government is a bad force in the world, I suggest you look at your own country objectively: It has 750 military bases around the world. It has 7 giant armadas in the oceans. It has two wars of aggression going in other people countries. It has terminated the lives, with malice, of more people in the last 50 years than any other country on earth, it has committed more war crimes than any other country in the history of the Geneva conference. etc, etc ... After ... look objectively at China. It has no bases world wide. Its military is defensive and on Chinese territory. It has friendly relations with every nation. It is concentrating on social programs to help its people out of poverty. It is not interested in military alliances to confront anyone, its citizens are not advocating the overthrow of any groups government. ... now tell me again which government is the bad force in the world.

I assume you cadre leader provides you with these gems that you keep posting and pays you a few yuan bonus each time you post? You have posted the identical paragraph several times already.

The US does have military bases overseas, a large navy and 2 ill-conceived wars (which I can openly criticize without fear of retaliation). However, the rest of your statement concerning the US us pure b*llsh*t. Here is a list of countries that way surpass the US in terms of war crimes, genocide and state sponsored murder of its own citizens in the past 75 years: Cambodia, China, N*zi Germany, Imperial Japan, Rwanda, Russia, Turkey, Former Yugoslavia.

The US is far from perfect, but by any measure has been a force largely for good in the past 75 years. It is also the only victor in a major war to actually help rebuild its former enemies (through the Marshal Plan) and turn them into major allies and economic superpowers.
02:31 PM on 03/28/2010
You talk about taking an objective look at governments, but you use words like "malice", and cite "facts" about war crimes that have no documented basis. You're just a shill for the Chinese government.

I never argued that the US government is a good or benevolent force. While the US has indeed done some things most US citizens are not proud of, is has also contributed internationally in good and helpful ways consistently throughout the course of the past 100 years. This is undeniable. For example, I would like to see where China would stand right now if it were not for American intervention in the 1940's.

Your government functions through internal coercion, censorship, and tight control of scarce resources. This is well-documented and undeniable; the Chinese nationals that I know admit this readily and unabashedly. We can argue until we're both ready to collapse about the various "noble" causes addressed by your government, but you have to be willing to admit that there are aspects of your culture and governance that leave much room for improvement. For example, child slave labor, poor regulation of hazardous materials (both in the consumer market, and with regards to the environment), and almost non-existent civil liberties for the citizenry, are all issues that most Americans simply can't imagine looking the other way about.
03:51 PM on 03/25/2010
Google will be themost hurt. Already, on the first 24 hours of this attempt by Google to circumvent China laws, all the major contracts of Google in China have canceled. When will these American people quit believing all of the US propaganda. Chinese people are proud of their country, its government and are quite nationalistic especially to a foreign entity who acts belligerent to our government.

ChinaLover,

Better than marching into the country with arms like you did in Tibet.

Here you are ... a classic example of my above post. This man believes I would covet an American green card ... my friends will get a great kick out of this ...
08:21 PM on 03/25/2010
Nina28 is corect; all Communist governments are repressve because if they allow their people a degree of freedom the government will soon fall. One reason The so-called union of Soviet socialist republics fell is because the leader of that time allowed a fair degree of freedom.

China was not more than 2% of Google's business, but it had over 20% of the Chinese market.

In the short term, it is the Chinese people who lost access to the world's foremost information access company.

In the long term, Google may lose part of the Chinese market share, but they have maintained their brand which also will play out in unknown ways in the future.

From Bloomberg, http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewsstory&tkr=GOOG%3AUS&sid=am_sBH90dHuI

Google Inc.’s decision to redirect mainland users to an uncensored Hong Kong site is a “deliberate plot†to promote the “intrusive strategy†of the U.S. under the guise of supporting a free Internet, a researcher affiliated with China’s Cabinet wrote.

Do not waste time to discuss the issue, you will find Google's plot in the future.
