Chicago architects Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill have been selected by a Saudi Arabian investment firm to design the latest entry in the world's tallest building derby--a kilometer-high skyscraper on the fringes of the Saudi city of Jeddah, according to a published report.
If the story turns out to be true, Smith (at right in photo) and Gill will have bested the firm they left, the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), for the prized commission, which has added economic significance because the recession has put scores of architects out of work.
