What a bunch of frauds, Atkins diet has done nothing but increase obesity by addicting people to fatty foods. Complex carbohydrates are some of the most nutritional foods on the planet, most fiber, vitamins and minerals come from them, which are neglected by Atkins use of ketosis as a foundation for everyday eating.

If the Atkins diet worked long term, would we really need a new Atkins diet??

Who gives a damn if Atkins makes you thin? What I want to know is, does it make you healthy?

The answer is a resounding NO!

You lose weight on Atkins because it promotes ketosis, which occurs naturally due to starvation, Type 1 diabetes and alcoholism.

http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ketosis/Pages/Introduction.aspx

The American Heart Association recommends against high-protein diets: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=11234

And according to research, "The low-carbohydrate diet was associated with a greater improvement in some risk factors for coronary heart disease."

Can we stop promoting weight loss diets now?

Dr. Atkins is one of my heroes because he had the courage to speak out against the faux science that you cite here.
The Atkins Diet saved my health/life. 10 years of a low-carb lifestyle and I'm not dead yet! In fact, I am in absolutely radiant health; never even a cold. I am 57 and I jog or bike every day (often for hours at a time), and eat practically no carbohydrates. I have severe genetic insulin resistance and cannot metabolize glucose (carbohydrates).
Do some real research.

actually only one, the amount of calories taken in versus the number of calories burnt.

If you mean health it comes from nutritional value per calorie and physiological health (sunlight, exercise, mental. physical and social well being)

You are completing ignoring the role of insulin in weight management and disease process. Metabolism is much more complicated than calories in/calories out.

Will have to check it out.

There is plant protein available so it can be vegetarian.
