Netanyahu Humiliated After US Trip Goes Awry

Us Israel Obama

Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/26/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:00 PM ET

Exactly what happened this week when President Barack Obama met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been largely left to speculation, with White House spokesmen and their Israeli counterparts giving only the most cursory run down to the press.

Before the meeting even started, the Israelis appeared paranoid about U.S. intentions. The Australian reports that Netanyahu decided to not hold meetings in his Mayflower Hotel suite during his time in Washington, apparently due to fear it was bugged. Instead, meetings were held in a secure room in Israel's embassy.

During the White House meeting, the reportedly tense meeting broke off half way through, with the Israeli team left to their own devices for an hour - an unusual move that has invited speculation as to its meaning.

According to The Australian, Netanyahu asked that the president leave the room so he could consult with advisers back home about Obama's reportedly tough demands. Another theory, reported by Politico, says that Obama broke from the meeting to put his children to bed.

A third idea, as reported in British newspapers The Daily Telegraph and the London Times, floats the idea that Obama left the Israeli group in the Roosevelt Room while he dined without them. The Times also reports that after the second part of the meeting, the group later left the White House without using its phone - a sign of further fears of being bugged.

The idea of a frustrated Obama leaving the Israelis alone in a room during key talks has been widely read as a serious diplomatic snub. The Israeli press has rounded on the issue, with one paper newspaper called the meeting "a hazing in stages," and another saying that Netanyahu had received "the treatment reserved for the President of Equatorial Guinea."

Writing in Haaretz, Aluf Benn said that Netanyahu left the US "disgraced, isolated, and altogether weaker than when he came."

Whatever really happened, the publicity is only like to up the pressure on Netanyahu.

The right wing leaders in Israel and the US have undoubtedly talked and planned strategy for many years.

For decades we have seen Israel do things specifically in order to try to influence US politics !!!

They have been encouraged by some in the Republican party to do this, as they see most of the public brain-washed by our too sympathetic media and likely to support Israel no matter what. Of course sometimes even the GOP finds Israel going too far, like when Reagan finally called their PM to demand a stop to massive bombing.

Unfortunately the right wing leadership in both countries is not the pleasant conservative your neighbor might be. They tend to be power hungry if not completely mad for it. They do not respect democracy, they or close allies will do anything to keep or get power. In the US we have plenty of evidence of massive voter fraud in Florida, 2000, or Ohio, 2004.

Far right politics is dangerous. It led to Iraq, and thousands of US troops killed and wounded. Not to mention estimates of 500,000 Iraqi people, many children, also hurt or blown to pieces. A debt that will require generations of higher taxes.

That is why we must not only read HP or blog, but give as much money and time to defeat the right wing again. Their hate will be encouraged if they win, they will be stronger for 2012, and that could lead to another Middle East War.

Israel fears US will withdraw support in UN

U.S. will 'consider abstaining' if UN votes on East Jerusalem

The threat of a U.N. abstention might be enough to get additional compromise from Israel. However threatening and actually doing are two different things. Actually getting a U.N. resolution passed condemning the settlements and demanding that Israel halt and remove them would in diplomatic terms be a huge victory for the Palestinians. People, please don't get your hope too high that US is becoming an slightly impartial mediator. It is a temporary thing mostly in retaliation to what Israelis did to Biden. Israely lobby is the most powerful lobby (just look at the list of attendees in their recent event) in Washington with full control of US policy for the ME.
I still believe there will not be a just peace there due to intransigence, arrogant, and hawkish attitude of Israel. One state is the solution.

That would be my dream as well - 'an Israel from the Med to Jordan with democracy for ALL it's inhabitants.'

But Israel's not about to agree to a 'one state' solution if there's the slightest chance non Jews could achieve a voting majority, or even a minority with political clout.

And Israel needs the 'territories' to deport it's 'Arab' population to whenever their numbers come close to giving them enough votes to affect the pro-Zionist policies of it's Gov.

Many believe the British Balfour Declaration of 1917 established the State of Israel, but it did nothing of the sort (it was to help enlarge a Homeland Settlement that had existed for almost 2000-years in Palestine), in fact to correct this, in 1939 the British Woodhead Commission produced their document titled The White Papers, and this document did establish a State of Israel, a little less than 5% of Palestine, with the remaining 95% to become a Palestinian State.

This is when three large Zionist Para-Military terrorist groups began attacking British, along with Palestinian. What the United Nations did later in 1948 was a blatant violation of Int'l-Law, and should be rescinded, back to the British 1939 mandate for a State of Israel.

obama's foreign policy of insulting our allies and appeasing our enemies will result in America being weaker around the World. obama refused to interfere in iran but doen't have any qualms about bringing down governments of our allies like Israel and Hondurus. obama seems to think he can get the terrorists to like him by trying to be like them. this is a serious psychological flaw he has exhibited throughout his life.
03:57 AM on 03/29/2010
Obama is not insulting our allies nor "appeasing our enemies."
But it wouldn't matter what he does, because this is the narrative that was concocted long before he even became president. The psychobabble is just icing.

In this case, there was some coolness. That coolness was due in large part to the ridiculously undiplomatic behavior exhibited when Biden was in Israel trying to reinvigorate negotiations, and one of Bibi's ministers insisted on making a splashy and badly timed announcement about more settlements. Everyone has to play.

Some who post here love more war they never get enough of them. They also have never served in the military yet would be ready to attack and deploy troops on a moments notice.

They do not believe in diplomacy at all and are often violent in there own surroundings at home.

i would be considered to be on the far right concerning Israel and have no problem debating with anyone concerning Israel. That being said there are limits and this was just stupid announcing the settlements while Joe Biden was in Israel and adding fuel to a fire because of some extreme group in Israel hates Barak Obama.

Israel had 200 rockets launched at them and i would call that WAR. but their weak leader did not fight and call it war and because of that Israel has been set back big time.

If anyone would of launched 200 rockets into U.S. , Russia, France, Briton or any other country could you ever imagine what would happen?

Israel had a war with Jordan and Egypt and captured land and after a longtime and many lives lost the land was returned and a real peace made.

Israel mistake not declaring war and claiming religious sites and other land when the 200 rockets were launched. They there would of been something to negotiate for.

So nice to see these ungrateful drama queens taught a lesson. How do they think they are? A tiny, third rank country, with no economic or stategic importantance, insulting our VP? Thank God Obama has showed he will demand respect. I guess moving up 6 points in the polls in Israel this week is HP's headline writer's idea of being "humiliated"!! Nothin else to write about ??? geez!
10:47 PM on 03/28/2010
What is your point.
You want to show that majority of Israelis are against peace?
Or majority of Israelis are against stopping settlement?

Take Obama's word like words from a friend who want you to act for your own prosperity and stop building out the settlement.

You will be able to live side by side with Muslims and Christians.

There are 20,000+ Jews in Iran and if they move to Israel they could have one of these settlement homes. Just maybe they are the real Jews and do not want to have blood on their hands.

Even if you stop settlement today, there is enough land for Jews for generations to come. If you are a peace loving nation stop building the settlements and come to the table for signing a peace agreement according to international law.

This article is full of speculation and innuendo. It is said the President was rude. There is nothing in Obama's character, his past history, demeanor, nor his goals in the Middle East that would make this plausible, let alone likely. I don't believe it.

Obama doesn't exactly have the reputation as being "rude". You don't have to think of someone as a "messiah" to observe that certain insinuations are outside of someone's character. Just because he's Your Satan and he can't do anything right, doesn't mean that you are not the one who is blind. Hatred can be just as blind as love. Evidenced by your seething disdain for hollybork.

unfortunately for you there are multiple instances of obama being rude on You tube. his treatment of reporters who don't tow the line, his giving the finger to debate opponents, his rudeness to mccain during his meeting with the Republicans, his snide remarks to his party faithful where he denigrates any resistance to his will. all of obama's past history points to a narcissist who is rude to the people he is disdainful of.

Okay, I'm not the president's biggest fan, but I'm going to defend him against this crap that he was rude to John McCain. McCain came into that meeting with an "I'm-gonna-show-you" swagger and attempted to humiliate the sitting president -- this after he and the Joementum-filled ***-clown who follows him around had humiliated Obama abroad by pledging their loyalties to Israel over the United States. John McCain got a well-deserved dressing down by, yes, his superior.

Look, libs tried to do this to Bush, too, and were resoundingly rebuked. You can disagree with a sitting president; you can protest against a sitting president; you can even insult a sitting president all you want. What you can't do is attempt to humiliate the person in the big chair. John McCain was being petty and annoying at that meeting. He got what he deserved.

"Denigrates resistance to his will"??? I heard it as making a point in a skillfull and powerful manner. Calling people out on their behavior is fair. "Resistance to his will"--I think what he is standing for is the will of the American people who elected him and still want him to do what they elected him to do.

Yeah getting up in disgust and leaving your honored guests alone at the dinner table... that might be considered a bit RUDE!!!

I've said it before and I will say it again.. Obama is an anti-semite and will hang Israel out to dry.

How else to explain the fact that he has let the sanctions against Iran languish on his desk for months???

To my Progresssive Jewish friends... OPEN YOUR EYES!
09:32 PM on 03/28/2010
Its is a darn shame when friends leave friends hung out to dry, and no one knows this better than Bibi Netanyahu. There is no evidence for your assertion that the President is anti-semitic... one could just as easily say that Bibi is anti-American. The way that Bibi hung out the Vice-President to dry was I'm sure the subject of much amusement in private Israeli circles. This, on the heels of the Interior Minister's bizarre and shabby treatment of the Turkish Ambassador (an ally of the United States) is simply not the type of behavior that instills confidence in the fidelity of Israel. Surely, the Isreali people deserve better.

History looks like this
10:13 PM on 03/28/2010
Netanyahu seems partial to a single state as opposed to the American support for two nations in Palestine. This may be in fact the only credible choice since the West Bank has been sliced and diced until a nation there just doesn't work. Then, the better American program would be to 1) demand human rights for the West Bank Semites and 2) full citizenship as Israelis. Codicils to property sales that forbid resale to Palestinians would have to be voided.

These wars that Israel fights with its neighbors are more in the nature of mere battles in a continuing war. If they lose a single battle -- and, they will either soon or in 50 years -- Palestine will be united. It is to their advantage to settle while they are ahead.

I like how all these posters claim how much Israel doesn't need the US and yet here we are - still giving them billions a year in "aid" and weaponry. It's also the US that gave Israel hundreds of nuclear missiles that can target every major city in the Arab and Muslim world. No need to thank us for your current state of security...

SouthpawSass, not only do these Zionist believe they are above anything and anyone, the brave Zionist-navy when not endangering Gaza fishermen, boarded a US aid-ship in Int'l-waters off the Gaza coast, forced an American citizen into their terrorist-vessel, forcefully taking her into the Zionist-State, and charged her with "entering Israel illegally".

This was not only a violation of Int'l and American law, it was accurately an 'Act of War'. This Zionist-Gov in control of the Israeli citizens not only is looked upon as criminals by many other nations, but thanks to the internet circumventing US-Media censorship of many situations of this sort, many Americans are discovering it is way past time re-evaluating every connection our government has with this Apartheid group.

Citizens in this State of Israel are also becoming totally disenfranchised with Zionist Apartheid
policies, bringing everyone for decades nothing but suffering.
