'Sun Come Up' Shows Sad Fate Of Climate Refugees In Carteret Islands (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/29/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:00 PM ET

In Papua New Guinea's Carteret Islands, the connection between land and sea runs deep. Jennifer Redfearn's new documentary "Sun Come Up" highlights how it has provided the islands with not only their sustenance, but their culture. As one islander says, "the ocean is like a mother to my people."

But as "Sun Come Up" reveals, this powerful bond between the Carteret people and the sea may one day only live in memory. The Carteret Islands are one of a growing list of island nations that are falling victim to rising sea levels caused by climate change, and the islanders are all too aware of it.

They will have no choice but to move to higher ground, and their options are grim as they search for a home in war-torn Bougainville, an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea. And when that happens, "we will not be the Carteret people anymore," an islander sadly concludes.

"Sun Come Up" will make its world premiere at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, where it was an official selection.

That's not true. They don't deny themselves, or their ego's.

You can Google "submerged islands" and find them easily. There are 18 so far.

NASA has just stated that 2009 was the second hottest year ever in the history of mankind, falling just behind the hottest, 2005. With an El Nino and a new solar cycle, 2010 is predicted to be the new hottest year ever.

Please note that all of these hottest years have occurred after 2000, so let's not start in with that nonsense about warming ending in the 90's. That claim is completely false, no matter how many times it's repeated.

So, where are the before and after pictures of land that was once above water that is now under water? And not before and after storms ... or low tide vs high tide.

Why would you have pictorial evidence of this land when they had no problem? It's not as if they were resorts. What, you think the islanders are making it all up, for what? Oh, yes publicity or at least their fifteen minutes of fame. And of course when they have to leave their homeland that too will keep them in the spolight.

Do you not see something missing here? There's a logic and sensibility that seems missing>

This is not the only land that is being lost under water. It's easy enough for you, sitting safely in in front of your computer, to be cynical and smarmy about this but we're talking about ancestral lands and cultures that are being lost. These people are losing their homes and their livelihood while "pundits" like Sarah Palin go round denying that climate change is taking place. What happened to compassion - or is that not part of your DNA? I despair of the human race and its inability to see the bigger picture. "If it doesn't affect me, what do I care?" seems to be the prevailing attitude. It's sad and pathetic.

Al Gore suppressed those pictures. He had 3 trillion gallons trucked in for this documentary.
