Voyeur West Hollywood: GOP Spent Funds At Club, Lavish Hotels [UPDATE]

First Posted: 05/29/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:00 PM ET

The Daily Caller's Jonathan Strong has basically won the morning with a story about RNC Chairman Michael Steele's lavish lifestyle on the road. Strong reports that Steele "once raised the possibility of using party money to buy a private jet for his travel," and has run up some substantial tabs at some of our nation's nicest hotels. But if you ask me, he sort of buried the lede... probably strategically! Because look what awaits you in paragraph six:

Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,620.71 spent [update: the amount is actually $1,946.25] at Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex.

Oh, wow, awesome. Note that Strong's done his due diligence on the amount spent. As of this writing, Voyeur's website is not loading, probably because every single staff member of the Democratic National Committee is currently on the site, looking for images of Steele in the champagne room. But check out some of the Yelp testimonials:

The girl at the door sent us in right away and told us to go to a table by the bar and get some free Champagne. Seriously. This club is amazing. There are topless "dancers" acting out S&M scenes throughout the night on one of the side stages, there's a half-naked girl hanging from a net across the ceiling and at one point I walked to the bathroom and pretty much just stopped dead in my tracks to watch two girls simulating oral sex in a glass case.

Really understated elegance here.

Also, Lindsay Lohan was at our table at one point.

Other relatively recent reviews testify to Voyeur being something of a "velvet rope" type of place -- more a haven for celebrities to dip their toes into some sanitized version of outre culture than an out-and-out bondage club. Like a Ruby Tuesday of gothic sex at which you might see Mickey Rourke.

Strong focuses primarily on Steele in his article, noting that he declined requests for an interview. He reports a fair share of off-the-record, internecine disgruntlement, however:

Complaints, almost always expressed off the record, have been bitter. "This is not somebody who is out recruiting candidates," said an aide who worked closely with Steele. "He is not meeting with donors. He's not asking for money. The guy is writing his book or doing his speaking gigs, or whatever the hell else he fills his days with. Those are his priorities."

Well, maybe he is recruiting some very unique candidates?

Take a look at more of the RNC's lavish spending habits:

In February, the RNC reportedly spent nearly $2,000 at Voyeur West Hollywood, a nightclub featuring scantily-clad dancers. UrbanDaddy calls Voyeur "a lavish new nightspot suggesting that highbrow elegance and a bit of S&M are not mutually exclusive."

UPDATE: Greg Sargent says the RNC is undertaking an investigation of the Voyeur West Hollywood expenditures, and has been quick to establish that Steele was not the patron in question. A statement from the RNC reads thusly:

We are investigating the expenditure in question. The story willfully and erroneously suggests that the expenditure in question was one belonging to the Chairman. This was a reimbursement made to a non-committee staffer.

The Chairman was never at the location in question, he had no knowledge of the expenditure, nor does he find the use of committee funds at such a location at all acceptable.

Good reporting would make that distinction crystal clear. The committee has requested that the monies be returned to the committee and that the story be corrected so that it is accurate."

Elsewhere, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Jay Bookman wonders if Steele has finally "run out of lives as RNC Chair." And earlier this year, former White House official/Bob Dole spokesman Doug MacKinnon sounded alarms, slamming Steele (along with Florida Governor Charlie Crist), for "reckless and self-indulgent behavior" and for placing a higher priority on promoting his "ego-centric book."

FURTHER UPDATE: Alex Pappas of the Daily Caller has identified Erik Brown as the staffer reimbursed for the RNC-funded escapade. Brown owns Dynamic Marketing Inc. a marketing and consulting firm recently linked to California GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner, and has apparently attended an NFL football game with RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

Tucker Carlson, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Daily Caller, responded to RNC complaints about this morning's article, saying:

Our questions remain: Why did the committee spend more than $17,000 on private jets in the month of February? How and why was RNC business conducted in a bondage-themed nightclub, and how and why were the nearly $2,000 in charges that resulted approved by RNC staff?

Michael Steele had nothing to do with this....

Didn't the dems recently have a big event at the Playboy mansion? Where's the outrage from you statists on this one?

I guess it's rapidly getting to the point where we can't trust anyone with our hard-earned money, and now that list includes you guys. What priorities do you really have when you use our money to go out and piss away cash in a lesbian-themed bondage bar? How can you claim to represent us while taking assets for crap like that?

I quit. It's time to take care of me and my family. All the money we used to donate to Republican causes now stays in our pockets. We can't trust you, the Democrats, or anyone else to take proper steps and spend our money responsibly. We will begin stocking up on items that will get us through when the infrastructure begins failing and the government can not take care of all Americans. We will use our money properly. No more for you. No more for anyone but my family. I'm done.

Like Tiahrt, the Kansas Governor who took(stole) the Tax Payers Money to pay for his Senate Campaign, Mr. Steele and The Republican National Convention has taken once again tax payers hard earn money and spent it on the following:

Beverly Hills Hotel $9K
Four Seasons $7K
Voyeur West Hollywood $2K Stripe Club Lesbian Sex Act

OK THEY WANT TO FOCUS ON GAY MARRIAGE, YET THEY SPEND OUR TAX DOLLARS CONTRIBUTED TO THEIR CAMPAIGN ON LESBIAN SEX ACT.

LIKA SARAH PALIN, CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY REALLY STAND FOR? ITS MY PERSPECTIVE THAT THEY NEED TO REGATHER AND FIND OUT WHICH DIRECTION THEY WANT TO GO IN. BECAUSE THUS FAR I SEE LITTLE CONSERVATIVE VALUE AND A COMPLETE DISREGARD FOR THE COMMON AMERICAN PEOPLE AND SMALL BUSINESSES.

Actually, Steele seems to be taking the Berlusconi approach, which is 'stick to your version of the story and don't resign, no matter what.' There's lots to learn from the Italian PM.

I really don't think that Steele gives a whit about this controversy or embarassing the GOP. The RNC, in a blatant act of cynicism, elected this guy as a counter to Obama. As if only a Black man could criticize a Black President. No Obama, no Steele. Surely he realizes this and is taking the GOP on a Grand Old Ride. Spend Michael, Spend!!!

This behavior is totally inappropriate. Why can't they just stick to anonymous encounters in airport bathrooms like real Americans?

Steele will be fired as soon as the GOP can find another black Republican to be RNC chairman.... This may take a while.

Isn't Lindsey Lohan a bit young to be the lady who gets drunk and hangs around going from table to table endlessly?

The GOP certainly loves their gay clubs, just as long as they don't try to get married.

So the GOP is now officially the party of the insane? They have a psycho gun totin' lady who hopped from college to college and a guy who tried to get elected on the premise of more wars and more outsourcing of American jobs. Anyone who voted for McCain/Palin should never be allowed to vote again. There are countries for people like you, just not in the USA.
09:36 PM on 03/31/2010
Take it easy guys ... this is GOP's best solution to boost the economy and jack up the employment rate.
11:16 PM on 03/31/2010
The GOP's solution is for the country to fail so they can accuse Obama of failing in the hopes they will be voted back into power.

Remember the GOP's first, second and third laws: Party first.

interlude I agree. The GOP had 8 years of Bush, actually chaney/rumsfeld, running our country into the ground, and they had the hubris to blame it on Obama before he even lowered his hand from the Swearing In. The RNC is doing everything in their power to make sure that that black muslim foreigner fails, and driving the US into ruin is the main battle plan. They are also unadulterated hypocrites. They scream about "family values" and blabber on about being righteous men of god while frequenting sex clubs and worse. It is always the ones who claim to be the holiest who are actually the most loathsome. (Reminds me of the 9/11 hijackers who claimed to be so religious. They spent their last night with prostitues. Probably getting in practice for all those virgins supposedly waiting for them in heaven. Has anyone ever asked those virgins what they think of that arrangement? Oh, silly me, of course not, they are only women). But I digress.
03:31 PM on 04/01/2010
This reminds me of a bad but funny joke. Suicide bombers/hijackers get to what they think is Heaven. Immediately, they are beaten to a pulp by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson (ignore this last name if you are in Texas), James Madison etc. While cowering beneath the blows, they say "Where are the virgins". Washington replies: Someone misheard. It's Virginians.

The ability of Republicans to shoot themselves is amazing.

It's like the whole party went hunting with Cheney.

I find it so very disturbing that the Republican Party can't see what a bunch of rotters and blackguards they are. They let the likes of Limbaugh, Coulter and Beck speak for them.

Even out-of-the-way gas stations in the backwoods of Appalachia have security cameras nowadays.

Might not a high-class, up-to-date establishment such as this also have such a camera by the entrance to record who comes and goes, in case of robbery or other problem?

Might not the management of this establishment be persuaded to give an enterprising reporter a peek at the three- to four-hour window of the videotape from said video camera, and perhaps allow the copying of still images that prove or disprove Mr. Steele's story?

Just saying, there's the truth and then there's Michael Steele's side of the story.

Let's see which is which.

(Of course, if the tape existed and has been swiped or wiped, bring the opener for the brand new can of worms.)

I like your way of thinking. It shouldn't be limited to just 3-4 hours. Just imagine the potential. Entire web sites could be devoted to the revelations.
12:34 PM on 04/01/2010
I think you will not find surveilance cameras in places like this for precisely the reason you wish they were there. The patrons of these places would not go if they were being filmed. Sleezy underbelly entertainment is not something "celebreties" want "their public" to see them enjoying.

The patrons of these places would not go if they KNEW they were being filmed, you mean. And you may be right. The great thing about these security cameras today, though, is they are soooooooo unobtrusive. Some of them are as tiny as a nipple ring.

GOP leaders--we know you like nakedness; we know you ARE NAKED. Skanky Steele is yet another emperor with no clothes, just like Scott Brown.

See what I mean: http://stylestorymedia.wordpress.com/2010/03/26/scott-brown-put-some-clothes-on/

Hey Michael Steele, I think it was that great philosopher Big Daddy Kane who said:
