Scott Roeder Sentenced To Life In Prison: George Tiller's Murderer Describes Abortion In Court

ROXANA HEGEMAN   04/ 2/10 12:12 AM ET   AP

Scott Roeder

WICHITA, Kan. — Defiant in court, a man who murdered one of the few U.S. doctors who performed late-term abortions used his sentencing hearing to do what the judge wouldn't let him do during his trial – justify his crime by describing abortion in gritty detail.

Scott Roeder was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 50 years, the harshest sentence possible under Kansas law for gunning down Dr. George Tiller in the foyer of the Wichita physician's church last May.

"I stopped him so he could not dismember another innocent baby," Roeder said. "Wichita is a far safer place for unborn babies without George Tiller."

Roeder, 52, also was sentenced to an additional year in prison on each of two counts of aggravated assault for threatening two church ushers as he fled. With time off for good behavior, Roeder won't be eligible for parole for 51 years and eight months.

An attorney for Tiller, speaking in court as a friend of the slain doctor, said the toughest sentence would discourage other anti-abortion zealots from attacking doctors. Tiller's widow, Jeanne, cried as the sentence for murder was announced.

"We only can hope that this sentence will serve as a deterrent to those who have conspired and continue to conspire to murder abortion providers," the Tiller family said in a statement. "Certainly everything possible should be done by the prison system to insure that this man does not continue to foment hatred and violence from his prison cell."

District Judge Warren Wilbert could have made Roeder eligible for parole on the murder charge after 25 years. But he said there was evidence Roeder stalked Tiller and added that killing him in a church made the crime heinous because a house of worship is meant to be "a place of peace and tranquility."

Roeder argued he had chosen to obey "God's law" to save babies.

"I did kill him. It was not a murder," Roeder said. "If you were to obey the higher power of God himself, you would acquit me."

Roeder also took the opportunity to describe abortion procedures in detail, which he had been forbidden from doing during his trial. Most abortions are legal in Kansas, and prosecutors were careful not turn the trial into a referendum on the issue.

Roeder accused Wilbert of "duplicity" and said his trial was a miscarriage of justice because he wasn't allowed to present testimony then about the evils of abortion. He also said God's judgment against the U.S. will "sweep over this land like a prairie wind."

"He will avenge every drop of innocent blood," Roeder said.

Forty minutes into his remarks, Wilbert stopped Roeder as he was about to publicly attack District Attorney Nola Foulston.

"It is not a forum for you to get on a soap box for you to give your entire political beliefs," Wilbert told Roeder.

Roeder later interrupted Wilbert several times as the judge pronounced sentence. When Wilbert read from a previous court decision saying that allowing vigilantism would promote chaos, Roeder said, "Baby murder is anarchy and chaos."

As he was being led away in handcuffs after the sentencing, Roeder shouted, "Blood of babies on your hands."

Roeder's ex-wife said the outbursts were characteristic of the man she knew. Lindsey Roeder said she and their son, Nicholas, were relieved by the sentence.

"I think it will be a lot easier to put it behind us than it will be for the Tiller family," she said. "Their pain will continue long after ours has subsided."

Tight security guarded the hearing. A half-dozen sheriff's deputies gathered around Roeder when he began interrupting the judge and law enforcement officers earlier had explosive-detecting dogs sniff reporters' equipment. Sheriff's deputies joined agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on duty outside the courtroom.

During the hearing, four of Roeder's friends described him as a friendly, compassionate man who became angry at the state's refusal to stop Tiller's practice. He was motivated by a strong believe that abortion is wrong, not a desire to become famous or lead a movement, they said.

"Scott longs to be a law-abiding citizen," said Dave Leach, an anti-abortion activist from Des Moines, Iowa. "He hates anarchy. He wants to do what he can to make America better."

Lee Thompson, the Tiller family's attorney and friend, called the murder an act of domestic terrorism. He said his office still receives calls from women seeking medical services.

"The impact of his death on women throughout the world is like an earthquake," Thompson said. "They ask, where can I go? What will I do?' I have to say, 'I'm sorry, I can't tell you.' That's the impact of this crime."

Don't get me wrong, gunning a man down in Church seems totally indefensible.

However, even Bill Mahr acknowledges that there are many people (even non-religous ones) who think an unborn child is a living thing that has the protection of the law.

Is it so hard to imagine someone who felt like he was facing a mass murderer that he had to act?

Please, I'm not trying to defend him, but I kinda feel that we should look at these tense situations from both perspectives. He should still be convicted, and really should get the death penalty. However, just because YOU don't think that a fetus is a living person, doesn't mean that others feel differently.

His sentence was justified but his murder of Dr. Tiller based on his anti-abortion stand was not - you can't justified taking one life for another that doesn't even exist yet.

pretty sure Roeder could not spell 'anencephalic'; he's just another rightie fundie who wants everyone to live by his religion, because he does not believe in religious freedom, having totally taken the kool-aid on the whole "christian nation" fiction. And God is just so ..slow... in addressing all their 'important' issues, best to take matter into your own hands=domestic terrorism

Roeder is a heavily disturbed man and should be killed in my opinion.
He's been brainwashed to believe that abortions are something jesus opposed....but there is not one single mention from Jesus in the bible about abortion so he must not have been concerned with fetuses, Jesuswas more concerned with the humans he had to deal with. Over breeding is not a good thing for us at this stage of over population and limited resources. It is a wise person , in the 21 century that thinks before having more children than he is able to provide well for. Two well educated children is better than 10 wild idiots.

Eugenics always creeps me out. I don't want to invoke Godwin's law, but yeesh...

By the way, most Europeans and American couples (i.e. white people) have an average of less than 1.5 children. Our populations are going down naturally.

However, most islamic families are having a baby boom, due to the welfare style entitlements in Europe. So, maybe the wise person keeps cranking out kids, because it lands them a bigger check (paid for by taxes).

This opinion was formed after talking to a Frenchman who has immigrated to America.

You know, I'm not proposing eugenics, just some common sense, which seems hard to find these days. I wish the poor would be encouraged to have fewer children and the more well to do would have a bit more, to make for a more balanced world. Naturally , offering more money for more chldren is not a good way to achieve this! I hope the french reverse this ridiculous clause in their welfare system. I believe welfare recipients should be encouraged to have less chldren, offer free sterilizations, birth controls, abortions, etc, and only money for 2 kids,,,,if you have more, you get no welfare!. So if you choose to have 10, you're on your own, buddy!
How about that?

I watched yesterday as this man spoke and as his lawyers and friends spoke, trying to defend his indefensible actions. This man has not one ounce of remorse and those who agree with him have no intention of coming to their senses. They will continue to believe they are somehow entitled to dictate to others, how they will live their lives and they will continue to believe they have the God given right to commit murder. Nothing society will ever say to them, will sway them from their "holier than thou" attitude. Roeder receiving the "Hard 50" is very just punishment. He will spend the rest of his days on this earth, in a little cell, unable to control his own life, much less the life of anyone else.

He is a murderer plain and simple. He wanted to kill someone and thought murdering an abortion doctor would get him off. Morally, he is no different than any other cold blooded murderer.

Yeah, murder is always a good step toward the rule of law and making America a better place.

Clearly they are entirely incapable of rational thought. that goes without saying. It is the very definition and core of their problem.

While I am against the death penalty, I might make an exception for this creep. Too bad his cohorts can't be put behind bars as well. It is only a matter of time before they once again act out thier thoughts. We can all thank the GOP for empowering such people. A special thank you must go to the blowhard Bill O'Reilly!

While I am normally in favor of the death penalty, I hope Roeder lives a very long life--say to age of about 102 and is then tossed out of prison to fend for himself on skid row. By that age he will be incapable of killing any more doctors. Because as sure as God made little green apples, if he is released before he is totally enfeebled by age or disease process he will kill again in the name of his anti choice fanaticism.

actually he fits in with th4 kkk real well, heard he was also part of some miitia...fits the looney stereotype perfectly.
I thought it was funny that he thought the judge would side with him for killing live people in exchange for saving unwanted or even deformed fetuses....what a nit witt!

isn't it refreshing to see the Left all in an uproar, calling for the death penalty? i guess that old "progressive' mantra 'why kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?' went under the bus or down the 'memory hole'

i guess now it will be edited to include "unless the people kill to stop people from killing people-then, just KILL them"

as i've said before, i wouldn't lose a minute's sleep over Roeder being executed...i'm anti abortion and anti-murder

meanguy;

living down to your name, I see.
No, we on the 'Left' are NOT all united in wanting to see this cold-blooded killer killed for his reprehensible actions. Actually, many of us (I wouldn't presume to speak for ALL of us 'Lefties', I'll allow you to labor under that misconception) are fine with the sentence that was handed down. For the rest of his natural life, Scott Roeder will be kept away from society. He will receive 3 meals a day, adequate medical care (something many of us working and middle class cannot look forward to; ain't THAT ironic), a roof over his head, and an hour a day of sunlight.
Dr. Tiller, on the other hand will have none of those things to look forward to.
Thank you for displaying your arrogance and banality for all of us to witness.
FWIW

See what the "pro-life" loons (who are overwhelmingly in favor of capital punishment) liked that.
06:40 AM on 04/02/2010
i would not have lost a minute's sleep had the death penalty been imposed...but i wonder, would the "left wing" loons been weeping and wailing and chanting 'kumbaya' to oppose a death sentence for him?

"And Jesus said, 'Abortion is evil and an abomination in My sight, for is it not written that God knoweth all things, things past and things yet to be, and thus commanded that abortion shall not be done, and moreover, that any who would perform an abortion shall be put to death.' And the people listened and said 'It shall be done, O Lord, for God maketh His will known in detail, even unto the eating of seafood and mixing of garment fibers.' And Jesus did smile, and did urge His disciples to kill in His holy Name."

Funny, I don't seem to recall that passage. Chapter and verse, please?

If he did it in the name of Allah people would be too politically correct or afraid to say anything about it. Enough murder has been done already in his name anyway I would think, to last the civilized world that is free of that disease, forever. Nearly all murder is done in the name of someone's imaginary god.
