Tea Party Survey: Old, Conservative, Hate Obama, Like Fox News

Tea Party

First Posted: 06/01/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:00 PM ET

The individuals who make up the Tea Party movement are largely conservative and get their news from Fox; they're generally old and of moderate to low income; and they're fairly convinced that their taxes are going to rise in the next few years, even though they likely won't.

Those conclusions are part of a new study put together by The Winston Group, a conservative-leaning polling and strategy firm run by the former director of planning for former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. And they provide a telling new window on the political force that has revamped the Republican Party and altered the landscape of the 2010 elections.

In the course of conducting three national surveys of 1,000 registered voters, Winston was able to peg the percentage of the public that identifies itself with the Tea Party at roughly 17 percent. The group pledges that it is independent of any particular party (indeed 28 percent of Tea Party respondents in the Winston survey labeled their affiliation as such). But on pretty much every defining political or demographic issue, the movement lines up with the GOP or conservative alternatives.

Sixty-five percent of Tea Party respondents called themselves "conservative" compared to the 33 percent of all respondents who did the same. Just eight percent of Tea Party respondents said they were "liberal."

Forty-seven percent of Tea Party respondents said that Fox News was either the top or second source of news they turn to, compared with 19 percent of the overall public who said the same thing.

More than 80 percent (81 percent) of Tea Party respondents expressed very little approval of Barack Obama's job as president, which exceeded disapproval levels held even by Republicans (77%) and conservatives (79%).

All these data points suggest that the Tea Party crowd is comprised predominantly of conservatives. And, not surprisingly, the demographics of the movement seemingly align with those who traditionally vote for the conservative candidate as well. Fifty-six percent of Tea Party respondents are male; 22 percent are over the age of 65 (compared with just 14 percent who are between the ages of 18 and 34); and 23 percent fall in the income range of $50,000 and $75,000.

It's the type of group that would likely benefit the most from Democratic governance, with commitments to Social Security, Medicare, and middle-class job creation. But the Tea Party crowd is decidedly sour on the Democratic agenda. Fifty-six percent of Tea Party respondents said they believe cutting spending will create jobs. And while a huge chunk won't see their taxes affected if the Bush tax cuts expire for those making over $250,000, 82 percent think they will, in fact, go up.

These type of surveys, as usual, should be take with a grain of salt as the numbers seem drawn from interviews with roughly 500 Tea Party members (hardly a full sampling of the movement). Still, the results seem reflective of the politics of the movement and illustrate the absurdity of the argument that the Tea Party vote is truly "up-for-grabs."

Here is the survey:

This was mostly a well-constructed post, but it missed important mistakes made by the surveys (they didn't report on racial characteristics, nor educational levels). The post also does a disservice to readers by not explaining methodology but instead it furthers misconceptions of polls.

The Tea Partiers have been shown to have higher-than-average income and education. They are for limited government and defense of American values and borders. The Huffington Post fans cannot prove them wrong and so have to call them names. Well, here are some names for you people, and I mean it with all my heart: There is nobody ruder, cruder, dumber; nobody more vicious, violent and selfish than the brainwashed, left-wing, know-nothing anarchist thugs who love to parrot the idiocies of the mentally ill America-hating academics and pseudo-intellectuals who populate American university campuses and teach hate, unjustified blame and irresponsibility. I graduated at the top of my class from the University of California, have a graduate degree from the University of California and know what I am talking about.

"And while a huge chunk won't see their taxes affected if the Bush tax cuts expire for those making over $250,000, 82 percent think they will, in fact, go up." That's because Rush, Sean and FOX keep pounding away at this lie daily that their taxes will go up. These folks now believe this to the point of religion. It would be blasphemy to think otherwise

it's funny but i remember back when I was a kid that one of the gravest insults you could make was to, in any way, disrespect the American Flag and using it as clothing was the worst (yes I'm old). the closest you got was when Buck Owens painted the flag on his guitar. But today it's the height of patriotism to have your flag shirt, pants, hat and undies on...and the most interesting thing is that most of these 'baggers who are out there literally wrapped in the flag were the ones spitting on my hippie uncles for doing EXACTLY what they are doing today! oh the joy...

Tea Party is old, having no problems receiving government entitlements, racist, and hate all non-whites. FauxNEWS loves President Obama, since his election, their ratings have gone through the roof. President Obama should receive a ratings bonus every quarter from FauxNEWS. He serves as a lightening rod for hate from the racist elements amongst our population, and FauxNEWS is the major benefactor. Also, the Tea Baggers will be the downfall of the Republican Party as they move from a corporate right statist party, toward their base. By June, GOP Chairman Michael Steele will be ousted and replaced with a Tea Bagger apologist like Newt Gingrich or Karl Rove. This will act as the death kneel of the GOP, and the mainstream seizure of power by the TeaBag Party.

The Tea Party activists are neither patriots, nor the solution to problems that face the American public. They are the modern day NAZI party, and the United States is the Weimer Republic. All that is missing from the equation is the CHARISMATIC leader, and MICHELE Bachmann seems to feet the profile and is rising in prominence.

You mean government entitlements like Social Security that they paid into, having been duped into believing it was actually a retirement savings program? Is it that they hate non-Whites or that they resent being robbed and violently disrespected in the same instant? What kind of low life equates Tea Party activists with "tea bagging" - a porno term perfectly suited to the people using it. Death kneel? Use spell check. Nazi party, Weimar Republic, do you have any concept of the meaning of the words you use? No, you are just parroting the jibberish you hear from the ignoramuses you associate with. Obama is the charismatic leader of the party that will destroy the American system, to your everlasting joy and satisfaction, apparently. Good luck with your gutter dreams.

Wow did you guys not get the memo -- this is an election year -- you really have to ramp up the rhetoric! Not one mention of Sarah Palin, the "Bondage Club Event", or non-recorded disrespect for our Congressmen who just happened to take a short cut outside of the Capital and just happened to wade into a group of protesters. In addition to the points made, the memo says, it is vital to keep these stories alive until November.

But Mr. Stein did hit on the big divider of this election -- Age discrimination. One phrase that sounds like racial prejudice is grounds for banishment to France, but all day long it's OK to sneer that some one is "OLD"!

The 17 percent of the population that identified with the "tea partyers" surprised me -- I would have thought it to be maybe a third that. But it is very close to the percent of the popular vote that Ross Perot siphoned off and gave Bill Clinton the 1992 election. Hey Tea Party haters -- you may want to rethink and give those "old" guys your support -- they can and will win the election for you. Unless you really do think that Seniors are to worthless to do anything but steal money from.

Like duh, we didn't already know this......they're just the cloned sheep of Rush and Beck.
They're elitist, racist, and can't stand the thought that hypocritical, old, fat, balding white guys aren't in control of the country anymore. And guess what, I am white, my folks came over on the Mayflower and up until lately considered myself to be more to the right. Not anymore, I just can't stomach their lies and hypocrisy any longer. They represent everything that is broken about this country will do anything to appeal to the ignorant, lowest common demoninator of human nature to gain power.

President Obama gave them a tax cut, and they protested against it.
President Obama gave them health care reform, and they protested against it.

Everything President Obama does to make their lives better they protest it.

We know they voted for Bush, who gave them war, and higher taxes to pay for that war. So it does take a rocket scientist to know that they vote against their own best interest.

Almost 2/3 Republican and only just over 1/12 Democrat.

I think we all get it. A bunch of poor to middle class whites that hate the fact that Democrats won the last election. Simple.

If they wanted some credibility, they would have shown up in force when:
Their kids were being sent off to questionable wars
Their taxes were not going down while the rich people's taxes did
Their schools and hospitals were filling up with illegals let in by Bush
Their unskilled labor jobs were being taken by illegals let in by Bush
Their jobs were being sent over seas under Bush

Tell me, where were these people then? Why did they get so outraged before Obama could even take office?

The Republicans have it figured out. They know how to play race, religion and sexual orientation to get people like these Tea Partiers to vote and fight against their own best interest. I have to hand it to them.

The difference in their outrage at the policies of this President compared to the last and the last and the last is as plain as black and white.

excellent points. It reminds me of how the Nazi party used rage, hatred and fear
