The much speculated about, larger-than-life Bel-Air mansion belonging to actor Nicolas Cage was spotted by Curbed LA on ActiveRain this week, with the following update:

"On 3/18/2010 a Notice of Sale was recorded against the title to 363 Copa De Oro Rd...Cage bought the house in 1998 for $6.5 Million, but over the years the property was refinanced and borrowed against several times to the extent (that according to Public Records), over $17 Million is currently owed on the property."
The house is to be auctioned on April 7th, with bids starting at $11 Million.

The elaborate home, previously owned by Tom Jones and Dean Martin, is more than 11,000 sq. feet, with 6-bedrooms and 9-bathrooms. The two-story tudor mansion boasts all the comforts one could imagine, including an outdoor BBQ, a media room, a spa/sauna, a theater, a wine cellar, and one acre of lush landscaping. He hocked that house to the hilt without any consideration of paying it back. Who does Nicholas Gage think he is, the US government?

Beautiful house...but I don't know how anyone could imagine that much purple would not be an eye sore. Quite tacky interior.

The house and grounds are lovely, but the decor is strange.

Judging by the decor and the number of houses he is rumored to own, I would say that Nick Cage is a shopaholic and needs help.

Great to see that Huffington Post read my Blog on ACTIVERAIN ..... as did CURBED LA :)

What a great set for "The Great Gatsby" -- beautiful gardens for exterior shots; opulently tasteless interior to reveal the flaws of its inhabitants.

I thought Mr. Cage had better aesthetics but then again, his films...

Rich people used to think it fine to live in hotels. All of this at a much lower cost and company too.

Great history, lovely exterior and beautiful grounds. The interior looks like someone's bad dream to me. Poor Cage... seems as if he got carried away with himself. Wish I could buy it, redo the interior and have all my friends move in... make it a happy house again. Oh well, I can dream.

Beautiful dining room decor, but you could do that in a home with a smaller mortgage. The home does have beautiful floors and ceilings.

I heard stories about Cage blaming the his tax preparer and then claiming he would not lose the house, but apparently that was too much. Clearly Cage has still owes a lot. To me the home seems quite large and appears to more resemble a hotel than a house. A person who has not lost a job losing and losing a Mansion perviously owned by celebrities does not get much sympathy when so many are struggling on a day to day basis because of the economy.

Not my cup of tea. I'm sure someone will love it, though.

No wonder he went broke. It seems like he was living beyond his means. These houses are too much!
I feel bad for the housekeeper.
