Xcel April Fools: Activists Use Fake Website To Slam Energy Provider For Using Fossil Fuels

A prank against Xcel Energy on Thursday was only missing the activists popping out of the fake Web site they created and yelling "April Fools" at the energy provider.

By adding the word "Xcel" after the "www" in Xcel's real energy-efficiency-themed Web site responsiblebynature.com, a group of anonymous Colorado-based activists -- including some Boulder residents and students at the University of Colorado -- created a realistic mock site.

Posted on the site was a news release announcing that Xcel will close all of its coal-fired power plants in Colorado and supply 100 percent renewable energy to its customers by 2017.
