2-Year-Old Tries An iPad For The First Time Ever (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/06/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:05 PM ET

"Steve Jobs is a nine-year-old child," Huffington Post blogger Steve Rosenbaum wrote recently. "He knows that the iPad will be a massive hit with children."

So is it?

LaughingSquid's
Todd Lappin posted an enlightening (and adorable) video of a 2.5-year-old using the iPad for the first time ever.

Lappin describes his daughter's engagement with the tablet:

As you can see, after geeking out on my Sutro Tower homescreen, she took right to it -- including figuring out how to enlarge some of her favorite iPhone-legacy apps to 2x to display full-size on the iPad screen. If you're good at understanding kid-speak, you'll also notice that she immediately saw its potential as a video-display device. She lamented the lack of a camera, and wondered about its potential for playing games.

Check out the toddler's first encounter with the tablet below.

Quick Poll

Is the iPad child friendly?

Yes.

No.

Yes--but not for kids 2 years old or younger.

It is what it is...

That's NOT her first time using the device. Her movements are too sure and smooth. She uses it better than some adults. She's too fast for a first time user...

so simple even a caveman can use it.

Still it needs to run multiple apps. come with a camera, microphone and telephone - and play music. oh yea and be able to run Flash player. What else? Help me out here people as I am only parroting what I have heard in short sound bites. My apologizes.

Thanks. Can't wait until they come loaded and ubiquitous.

Do you really think I'd let ANY 2-year old play around with something I paid upwards of $600 bucks for?

A lot of folks here are getting hung up on their antipathy for Apple or dissatisfaction with features and not seeing the bigger picture:

Tablet computers (not necessarily iPad) are *clearly* going to be a big part of our kids' future. Just as we played with an Etch-A-Sketch or Speak-N-Spell, tomorrow's toddlers will grow up with touch-screen devices like this one. The potential for simple, tactile interfaces with easy-to-use apps can not be denied credibly.

Perhaps it won't be $600 or be used without a plastic screen for inevitable clumsy-fingered drops, but the tablet archetype's potential for childhood education and play is plain as day.

Funny

she can't figure out how to hold it either

She knew a little too much about how to resize the screen, and escape from one app to go to another, before Dad told her about pushing the button, for me to truly believe she'd never touched it before. But... she's cute, and she enjoys the iPad. Nothing wrong with that. If someone gives me one, I'm sure I'll enjoy it too.

You must not have kids, or experience with kids. They don't need any help figuring out intuitive devices.

Drop in to the Apple Store sometime, and let a kid loose on the low-table Macs for the first time ...

Yeah, she's either used it before, or has played with an iphone or ipod touch in the past. She instantly knows how to do various things without any experimentation or prompting from the man. I suppose I can't rule out the possibility that she's some sort of super-genius with psychic powers, but it seems more likely that she has more experience with Apple products than anyone is letting on. Regardless, it seems pretty obvious that she's not coming at this fresh and has at least some limited experience with similar technology in the past.

The kid is 2. Who cares which of the iMulti-touch devices she used before. People are getting hung up on the fact that she most likely used other idevices before. She is 2. Just sit back and enjoy the absolute adorableness of the video. It really is not that serious. 2yo navigating an iPad. Nothing more, nothing less. If its her first iPad experience as the title states, then great. If its her 2nd or 3rd time, then great. It doesnt matter. She is 2.

It's amazing to me how divided people need to be.

It's a great product, at a great price. All these new tablets don't really replace any other gadgets, they aren't really phones, and they aren't full-on computers either.

What they are is a replacement for my notebook full of dates, to-do lists, notes and chicken scratch. On top of that i can check my email, and any of the other browser based services i use, or any other service that has an app. As a small business owner, i will be buying one instead of a netbook since i don't need a wimpy pc when i have already have a brawny work machine, i need something to stay organized and efficient, these tablets serve that purpose, and they're here to stay.

As far as a child using one, i think 2 is the perfect age. From here on out our world will be filled with more and more gadgets, and before long just about everything will have, or be connected to an interface of some kind, and interfaces are only getting more and more touch based. It's the responsibility of a parent to make sure your kid is a whiz with computers and so forth, but it's also their responsibility to teach their child how to function as a human aside from computers, how to socialize and how to work with their hands.

Hmm... child abuse.

Touch and scroll won't develop its brain. Whatever happened to presenting the child with a puzzlel book and a wooden Abacus?

My kid has those. Guess what? She's bored. Wants to play with my laptop and iTouch. She's 20 months. This is a *good* thing. Computers are our future!

"I want the one that takes a picture." Sorry, kid.

Keep crankin' the yellow journalism out, Huffpo. Stay classy!

Maybe if you guys fill up the ENTIRE tech page with Ipad advertisements, maybe THEN people will actually believe this thing isn't a complete joke.
12:16 PM on 04/08/2010
Excellent point, there are more than 10 other tablets out, or on the way out. If they really need to talk about tablets they should write something explaining what these devices are actually good for, because everyone seems to be missing the point.

While your criticism of HuffPo's editorial choices may be valid, I hardly think this story worthy of a "yellow journalism" accusation. Save that for false stories about WMDs.

Ah, yes. "So simple, even a child can use it" tag line. How contrived.
