Nancy Pelosi Threatened: California Man Arrested For Health Care Reform Threats

Nancy Pelosi

SAN FRANCISCO (Associated Press) — A California man angry about health care reform allegedly made threatening and harassing phone calls to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, including at least one call in which he got through and spoke to her directly, law enforcement officials said.

Gregory Lee Giusti, 48, was arrested Wednesday at his San Francisco home, said Joseph Schadler, spokesman for the FBI's San Francisco office. Schadler would not disclose the charges against Giusti, saying they were under seal until his first appearance before a federal magistrate, scheduled for Thursday.

The threats involving Pelosi drew increased attention on the vicious verbal attacks that other Democratic legislators have faced over their support of the health care overhaul. The arrest came a day after a Washington state man was arrested for allegedly leaving threatening voicemails for U.S. Sen. Patty Murray.

Several federal officials said Giusti made dozens of calls to Pelosi's homes in California and Washington, as well as to her husband's business office. They said he recited her home address and said if she wanted to see it again, she would not support the health care overhaul bill that since has been enacted.

One official said the man is believed to have spoken directly with Pelosi at least once.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

Giusti has been in trouble previously for making threats. In 2004, he pleaded no contest in San Mateo County, just south of San Francisco, to a felony charge of making criminal threats and was sentenced to a year in jail and three years of supervised probation.

The 2004 arrest occurred on a commuter train after Giusti was kicked off for not paying his fare, Steve Wagstaffe, chief deputy district attorney for San Mateo County, said. Giusti became enraged, started screaming and threatened to kill the conductor, who called in the sheriff, Wagstaffe said.

A statement from Pelosi's spokesman Wednesday praised the efforts of law enforcement and said the House Speaker would have no further comment "at this time."

On Tuesday, Pelosi told reporters in San Francisco that "people have been active in expressing their disagreement." Sometimes those expressions have risen "to the level of threats or violence," she said, explaining that she was not allowed to comment on her own situation.

Rose Riggs, a neighbor of Giusti in a public housing complex in the city's Tenderloin district, said she saw two plainclothes and two uniformed officers take him away in zip-tie cuffs. Riggs, 62, said Giusti was known for engaging in heated political debates with others in the building.

"He was not one of my favorite people. He had a real attitude problem," she said.

Neighbor Greg Little, 53, said he also saw officers take Giusti away.

"He was real quiet when they took him out. He wasn't combative," Little said.

Sister Lorna Walsh, community operations manager of the Mercy Housing complex where Giusti lives, said he had lived in the subsidized housing for almost 10 years. She would not comment further.

On Tuesday, federal authorities in Washington state announced charges against Charles Alan Wilson, 63, for allegedly made threatening calls to Murray. Officials said he left voicemails for the senator, including ones in which he's accused of saying "there's a target on your back now" and "it only takes one piece of lead."

Charges also have been filed against a Philadelphia man who allegedly made a YouTube video threatening Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va.

An open letter to conservatives
March 22, 2010, 3:16PM

Dear Conservative Americans,

The years have not been kind to you. I grew up in a profoundly Republican home, so I can remember when you wore a very different face than the one we see now. You've lost me and you've lost most of America. Because I believe having responsible choices is important to democracy, I'd like to give you some advice and an invitation.

First, the invitation: Come back to us.

Now the advice. You're going to have to come up with a platform that isn't built on a foundation of cowardice: fear of people with colors, religions, cultures and sex lives that differ from your own; fear of reform in banking, health care, energy; fantasy fears of America being transformed into an Islamic nation, into social/commun/fasc-ism, into a disarmed populace put in internment camps; and more. But you have work to do even before you take on that task.

Your party -- the GOP -- and the conservative end of the American political spectrum have become irresponsible and irrational. Worse, it's tolerating, promoting and celebrating prejudice and hatred. Let me provide some examples -- by no means an exhaustive list -- of where the Right as gotten itself stuck in a swamp of hypocrisy, hyperbole, historical inaccuracy and hatred.

I truly respect Ms. Pelosi because she has really had a lot to deal with and did so with dignity and composure. A very classy lady.

That said, none of our elected officials should have to deal with having their lives threatened because someone disagrees with them on any point. Adults should be able to agree to disagree. If you disagree, vote against that person in the next election. This fool that threatened Ms. Pelosi has a lot of nerve being that he's the recipient of government programs at the very same time that he calls himself being angry over HCR. Classic.

The idea that any two repressive governments are opposites is so wrong. They are different, but different forms of the same thing. Not opposites. I think that says a lot about your knowledge of politics. You know what your told to think, and then feels you are qualified to state myth as fact. Don't worry you are not alone there.

The guy has mental issues and needs help. I will bet he would of never acted on his threats. But better safe then sorry, and I am glad he was arrested.. Now that the feds have him maybe they can make sure he gets the help he needs.
That being said I don't understand how you people feel you can blame a movement made up of hundreds of thousands of people on the actions of less then 20 people. I don't blame the people here who have never been to a rally. I blame the ones who have, and are trying to label it something it's not.

@ SunTzu:

Just read your "verbal abuse" and "sleep well" replies and found them to be reasonable. Believe it or not, it seems we are not so far apart in reasoning and ideals.

We get hung up in the noise, we tend to adopt the shorthand provided us by whichever spinmeister we happen to most agree with; but that shorthand is rarely an accurate reflection of our OWN beliefs. I know I sometimes take the short route and repeat phrases not entirely appropriate to the given argument simply because it is familiar to both sides. This is intellectual laziness. Mea culpa.

You too seem to be guilty, taking the mean-spiritedness of Fox News in many of your remarks. Pelosi is 70 years old, for example; give her a break! Lay off some of the other formulaic responses, say what you really mean, and you'd get much more positive responses here.

We do differ in this;
" "I just want the freedom to disburse what I earn as I see fit myself, rather than through a bloated and inefficient government." "
This can never be; too many people, projects, and needs. Best we can do is make the government as efficient as we can. If you are honest and repudiate the "Bridge to Nowhere" and the phony Iraq war ALONG WITH what you dislike about HCR, you would be a respectable man and I'd be proud to fan an opponent.
03:05 PM on 04/08/2010
I agree that I often get caught up in the pettiness and partisanship that often pervade these threads. I get extremely tired of seeing the same talking points again and again, particularly those about Fox News, Limbaugh, Beck et al. Anytime a conservative makes a point, it invariably pops up. I get my news here, realclearpolitics (i like the polling features), Politico, and a variety of newspapers and search portals. I can't remember the last time I went to Fox News on tv or web, though I would not hesitate to. I consider the source on every piece of information I take in, and if I see something questionable, I simply look for the information from another source.

We will continue to disagree about the role and size of government, and I'm not interested in jumping through any hoops to earn a fan. I will tell you what I don't like about health care reform as we go sometime, but maybe not enough room left in this post - mainly mandates without sufficient cost controls, the president's deal with Big Phrma that prohibited reimportation, and the process of vote-buying that literally made me sick.

Everyone on the left that continually spouts disparaging remarks about Fox News to people of opposing views on this site should consider where their feet are (thats an expression, for you literal readers). Don't you think its a bit hypocritical to make assumptions about where we go for information, when you are posting from the ground zero of liberal talking points web site?

Telling people you don't agree with to leave is consistent with conservatives. Can't you share? Can't your ideas (if you have any original ones) stand the scrutiny of people who don't agree with you? You are cowards we would never back down from an intellectual battle with conservatives, who are usually unfit for service in such a battle.

Typical teabagger, it's all about them, want's everything but wont pay for it, throws hostile fit when doesn't get his way... Grow up teabaggers, this isn't grade school anymore, or is it preschool? Feel free to leave the country any time. There are lot's of third world countries that would be perfect for you. No government, rule of law, taxes, services.... Every man for him self and dog eat dog... Your idea of paradise isn't it? Enjoy your fortress and armed armada every time you venture out.. The rest of us will work on democracy without you..

But, Stop has a good point, Tealeaf.

Somalia would be a perfect choice for you folks on the far "no government" right. Somalia has no central government, no police, no taxes. It's a society made up of proponents of the philosophy of survival of the fittest.

Somalia is your answer all right.
