Over Half Of Detroit Homeless Population At Risk Of Dying On City Streets

Detroit Homeless

First Posted: 06/09/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:05 PM ET

The homeless in Detroit face a dire situation. The Detroit Free Press reports, that living on the streets puts more than half of them at risk for dying -- a far greater percentage than in any other American city.

Fortunately, several nonprofits are stepping up to address this problem. Detroit homeless service providers, in partnership with the Neighborhood Service Organization, took to the streets to identify, interview and find the most at-risk homeless people. This effort is part of Common Ground's 100,000 Homes Campaign -- to give homeless people housing and help them get back on their feet.

Nonprofit workers were able to interview 211 homeless people in three nights to find out what caused them to lose their homes and learn about the risks they face living on the streets.

Through the interviews, they learned that almost half the Detroit homeless struggle with mental illness and substance abuse; 13 percent were veterans and 15 percent had grown up in the foster care system. Out of the 211 people interviewed, there have been 358 hospitalizations in the last year, 456 emergency room visits in three months, 103 people do not have insurance, 74 people had been in prison and 149 had been in jail.

With this information, Common Ground and their partner organizations hope to serve the people who need their help most and find solutions to ensure their safety.

When we start to look at all of the suffering on this planet, it is heartbreaking. Surely thousands of homeless individuals die from exposure on the streets of this country every winter.

Don’t call them homeless. They prefer to be called Obumians.

Unfortunately simple people have simple solutions to complex problems. First there is a little problem of finding all the homeless jobs when people with master's degrees and years of experience are exasperating their life's savings because of eight years of Bushenomics. Second, even if the jobs were available to these people, not all of them have the mental capacity or the health to pursue them. What do you propose we do..send them to the gas chambers like Nazi Germany? I't's obvious you are one of the elitist RepubNOklans that keep thinking that no kind of hardships will ever reach you or any of your loved ones (if you even have any with a heart like yours). It's people like you with your "let them eat cake" mentality who are part of the bigger problem we are facing today which is greed and ignorance.

I think we should start a government housing drive to relocate these people to low population states like Wyoming, Montana, ND, and SD. At least there, they can have greater representation in the House....and the Senate. Just a thought.

Offer them a job, and many of these people would probably relocate, gladly.

Am I insane or did I just see a report about how the average home price in Detroit is literally in the range of $10,000? Why doesn't the city occupy entire blocks of abandoned buildings and fill them with temporary homeless housing?

Detroit is a victim of the capital flight that went with white flight to the nearby suburbs, followed by the ensuing economic isolation suffered by it's inhabitants.

Yes, you can get a house there for a song and a dance, or less.

Where are all the churches that claim their tax exemption is necessary because they provide the safety net for people in need with their charity?

Been to Detroit and hate say it, but the chances of people with homes dying is pretty high too.

Even the homeless need to get out of there! Whatever it takes. Hitch hiking. Greyhound Bus. Or foot.

well they could have all so interviewed 10,000 homeless in Sacramento California last summer !

all in one place. that is before the city evicted them !!

and that was just one city in america !! question ! do humans who are born in to this world have a right ! to lay there head upon it to rest ! with out paying a dime to any one ?

I mean when we are born into this world we as humans have certain needs not to be confused with wants !

first we need air then warmth then sustenance then a place to eliminate the sustenance we have taken in to our bodies and we need water these are the things we all need to just live !!

and we are all paying more and more for these needs as the years go by !! and it,s come to a point where more and more human beings are having trouble paying for just there needs to just survive !!

all I am trying to point out is ! where do we draw the line between profit and a humane Life

Heartbreaking. Veterans and good citizens of this country should not be homeless! There has got to be something we can do about this growing epidemic in this country!

Since WW II's end the USA has a tradition of throwing out veterans; as in Korea, Viet Nam; Iraq & coming soon to your town-Afghanistan.

They think 1979-level wages are great in 2010.

:(
12:55 PM on 04/12/2010
Actually 1979 wages are a lot better than what a lot of people are making in 2010.

Michigan weather is hard to survive when when you have the means. I cannot imagine being homeless during the brutal winters which last way too long. The suburbs are like a different planet compared to Detroit.

There aren't any. The only reason they profess to be against abortion is to pacify the snake handling religious fanatics. Otherwise they would be all for it and probably make it mandatory. Less free-loaders to take care of right?
