Elizabeth Rasmuson: Gum Wrapper Prom Dress Made By Iowa Teen (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/12/2010 5:12 am Updated: 05/25/2011 4:10 pm

FROM ASSOCIATED PRESS:

GARNER, Iowa — An Iowa teen is all bubbly over her one-of-a-kind high school prom dress she made out of gum wrappers. Elizabeth Rasmuson made her dress – and matching vest for her date – out of blue and white wrappers from Wrigley's "5 gum." The high school junior says she got the idea after hearing about someone making a dress out of duct tape.

She and her boyfriend began collecting gum wrappers last August. Rasmuson says she quit counting after 200.

Since the wrappers break easily, Rasmuson finished her dress with a vinyl top coat.

Very cute - great idea and she pulled it off beautifully. Now, note to Elizabeth, stand up straight and proud! That last shot of you in the video - your shoulders curled forward in the "teen skulk" really takes away from not only the beauty of your creation, but the beauty of you!

To the mother: Is that a hairDO or a hair DON'T?

That's awesome. I made a dress strapless dress out of garbage bags as a joke for my prom, but didn't have the guts to actually wear it. Kudos to her for going for it! www.theeasyindian.com

Great ingenuity! That's the kind of girl I would have dated in high school.

Now my wife and I still make our clothes out of found objects... but we're happy.

Awesome. What great ingenuity.

Distressing to see a good creative kid do something cool and people STILL troll the post badmouthing them.

It really is disturbing that people are so nasty about something so innocent. I wish I had that much creative initiative to make something like that; it probably took forever! I know there is a scholarship for making the best duct tape dress-maybe there should be one for gum wrappers :)

Some people must have learned that only negative comments bring them attention. It must be a childhood trauma.

My girlfriend once made me a scarf made out of merino wool. We never got any press coverage for it, however.

Love the dress, honey! But what happened to all your teeth? Oh, yeah. It wasn't sugarless gum, was it?

I only read the headline, that the young woman made her dress out of wrappers. And, because I don't chew gum, the only sugarless gum I know about is Trident...if it's still even being sold.

Maybe a gum scholar/expert can help me out.
