Google Tablet PC Details: 'iPad Killer' In The Works (PHOTOS)

Google Tablet

The rivalry between Apple and Google has intensified as the two companies increasingly tread on each other's turf. Steve Jobs, who accused Google of wanting to 'kill us,' recently unveiled an Apple ad platform called iAd that's set to challenge Google's mobile advertising strategy.

Meanwhile, it seems a Google tablet PC, Google's answer to the iPad, is in the works.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt knocked the iPad at Davos earlier this year--"You might want to tell me the difference between a large phone and a tablet," he said--and recently leaked details about the Google tablet that is in the works.

The New York Times reports,

Eric E. Schmidt, chief executive of Google, told friends at a recent party in Los Angeles about the new device, which would exclusively run the Android operating system. People with direct knowledge of the project -- who did not want to be named because they said they were unauthorized to speak publicly about the device -- said the company had been experimenting in "stealth mode" with a few publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet.

For a glimpse at Google's 'iPad killer,' check out several pictures posted to the official Chromium website which offer renderings of what a Google tablet might look like. Chromium has also posted a video demo (see below) showing how the device might work.

This is the real super tablet. I mean it beats the iPad on every single way. Review.

Ok. Actually, Google tablet device is not in ANY POSSIBLE way a PC, so it's very, very-very wrong to call it so.

By the way, it's an excellent time-tested trick- to try to turn Google (we love) into Microsoft and PCs, and more- Apple is in every article about every new device. Calm down. They are competitors, otherwise iPhone is Nokia's smartphones killer too, so hype-term 'killer' could become a real product killer?;)

Next. Apple hasn't invented Tablet market. iPad isn't a new category. It's a device of the category 'TABLETS'. iPad arrived much later after Jobs has said that 'he doesn't know how to produce computer cheaper than $600'(or $500) and media really almost forced Apple to begin works on their Tablet device.

New products aren't a KILLERs of iProducts, they're only competitors in categories that Apple hasn't invented.

Let's be friendly, business is business, but life is too short to be so evil.

How about instead of "killer," just let your tablet speak for itself. As an Apple patron, the whole "iWhatever killer" cheapens the competitior's product. It's usually stated in front of copycat products by bloggers, and then attempts to tear down an Apple product, causing Apple vs. Everyone else debates. I just like technology, and Apple is my choice since switching from Windows years ago. But I can appreciate other technology, EXCEPT when you present it as the killer of what it's copying. That's lame and weak.

I want a "pad" with a flat back so it will sit on a desk, with a handwriting recognition app that will make it into a virtual legal pad.

NOW not even 2 weeks after the iPad is premiered by Apple, all the iPad COPYCATS are coming out with their supposed iPad KILLERS! What a JOKE!
01:53 AM on 04/14/2010
The iPad is like a tablet PC. Or a giant smartphone. Nothing new.

Oh and comparable devices already exist:

Apples controlling ways let others flourish in the end. They may have the jump on it now but in the end their market share will be like their PCs... A niche player.. Yes, macs are just PCs with a different operating system and a cult following..
10:18 AM on 04/19/2010
True, but high-quality operating system (and hardware). That said, I'm perfectly fine with my Macbook and feel absolutely no need for an iPad, largely because if I don't want to run Apple's software (like iPhoto) on my Mac, I don't have to. Coincidentally, I don't. I prefer Picasa.

Google is a joke!
They aren't 'inventive' or
'creative', they're like Microsoft
and 'leech' on to the 'next' product
produced by Apple. Google
should stick to the 'clouds' for now
and come-up with something actually 'new'-

Uhmm you do realize Apple has not had an original idea in nearly 3 decades right? The Iphone, Ipod and Ipad are all ideas that have existed either in concept or retail products for years.

That is Apple's business model, take existing ideas 'appleize them, market them as new, cool and hip, charge insane amounts and call yourself innovative.

You actually think that the idea of a table computer was invented just a few weeks ago? Apple didn't invent anything with the iPad. They just applied their closed business model and marketing hype to it. That is not invention.

Uhmmm....you do realize those of us who actually own AAPL products and stock are looking at a recent doubling in stock price (in a recession) and the company has 25B or so in cash with no corporate debt. So basically all I have to say to you PC trolls is sour grapes as we Apple fanboys laugh all the way to the bank.

I agree and I bought an iPad swearing I would not only to have a neighbor demo that drawing App and other "work" Apps and I now cannot imagine not having this with me at all times. A sketchpad and more.
Weirdly Apple's dictatorship creates innovation. There's a bluetooth App, crude at the moment, that allows me to control my iPhone Camera from my iPad.

Flash alone is not reason enough to buy a plastic crippled computer running something ugly. Google needs more than a camera shooting nose hair and Flash.

The iPad simply the best sketchbook, scrapbook /data and project manager on this planet. the iPad is years ahead of Google. The only thing close to beating it does not even exist the MS Courier videos are awesome.

The iPad underwhelmed because Jobs never sees the full potential to make and create... he sold it merely as a video/book/news/web kiosk to buy other people's content. Not true but it's also made to last.. unlike the plastic crippled slates from Google.
10:20 AM on 04/19/2010
I don't get it.. Google doesn't HAVE a tablet out yet.

Are you trolling? Did I really fall for a troll?

The iPad doesn't have a killer app yet. With Apple's policies, more people are hesitant to develop for them. Or other platforms; people who do the work should profit for themselves as much as enhancing a company they work for.

Apple could have had a killer app for the iPad. All it would have needed was a camera to be the most fantastic personal video conference gadget. But Apple decided to put it off to the next version solely to have a reason for the half million people stupid enough to buy one without a camera to buy another one right away.

To those who think the iPad is just an obese iTouch, do you also think the automobile is just an obese golf cart?

Looks like it'll be about as useless as the iPad. Thanks, but I'll pass.

I had so many people get angry at me on this forum for not liking the iPad. I still dont know what the point of it is. I love that my iPod Touch slips in my pocket, thats why I got it. The size and ergonomics of the iPad look really awkward to me, and the ad irritated my pants off.

Having said that, I would like to see what people who have had it for more than a few days think.

I love the iPod Touch in hundreds of ways. The iPad is just an obsese iPod Touch.

Didn't P.T. Barnum once say: "There's an iLemming born every minute"?
09:08 AM on 04/13/2010
I would love the iPad if it had a keyboard, could run a real OS, and had a way of holding the screen up. Oh wait, that's already been invented, it's called a laptop.
09:25 AM on 04/13/2010
And you can get one that doesn't involve running a crappy Apple OS. It's perfect!

Not earning a lot of faith from me there Google. Trash the concept then secretly try and develop one. Hmmm, how about a company that believes in this develop one for me. I love it. I played with the ipad today and for about 90% of what I do its perfect. This is definetely going to be a game changer. The way you can sit on the couch comfortably and use this thing is just one aspect that makes this thing huge. My wife was talking about all the places she has down time that this thing would be perfect for. You cant really talk that way about a laptop. Until you pick one up you just dont see the difference.
09:27 AM on 04/13/2010
I'd trash the iPad too, even though the a slim-tablet PC potentially has a lot of uses. It just happens that the iPad isn't a slim-tablet PC, it's an over-sized, overly-restricted iPhone.

Nope. An oversized, overly restricted iPod Touch. The iPad has no phone capabilities.
