One can only hope that in the future evolution of women, we will develop REAL teeth "down there".

What is your process?
09:20 AM on 04/13/2010
I think the most immediate benefit of this device...is that we are all talking about the problem.
07:27 AM on 04/13/2010
I can see it now someone will use this thing to get even for some suposed wrong doing. It sounds good as long as it is used in the right manner BUT you know there are some people who will use it because it seemed like it would be a funny payback, not for rape but some other misdeed or percevied worndoing.
10:13 AM on 04/13/2010
I would expect that is incredibly unlikely. However, this getting used as a defense will happen. These things should come with matched serial numbers on them. The woman pulls off one and keeps it, the other stays with the ax. Otherwise, you're going to get a lot of "I broke up with her and she snuck into my house and jammed this thing on me" defenses.

While I think it is reasonable to bring up the fact that these devices might make women more vulnerable to further violence in the moment, I think many posters are missing one vital fact-

Women are already making these devices themselves.

There are women out there who have decided that if they are going to be raped, they want to hurt their attacker in the process and mark him as a rapist. The women making these homemade devices live with the constant threat of rape and are still willing to take the risks people here point out. It is their right to choose this.
10:14 AM on 04/13/2010
Absolutely. Give women some choice. There's an idea that can't possible be argued against, right?

This product is sure to make things worse for women. They are going to assume every woman has one and butcher her privates before they get down to the business of raping. Bad idea, Lady.

I can appreciate that she is bringing attention to weapon raping but I think this product is very misguided.

As a male I suggest a slightly different tactic. Since many of the rapists in the third world are the very same persons in positions of authority and will never be held to account, make a model that has a needle in it that delivers a dose of necrotizing fasciitis (or the flesh eating bacteria) into the rapists junk. I guarantee that he will never rape again, or do anything else if he survives. It's what any rapist deserves.
01:16 AM on 04/13/2010
it's definitely what they deserve, but I doubt if it will be very practical. one of our problems is the pc world where other cultures are allowed to victimize women. by the way, Neal Stephenson was way ahead of you in "Snow Crash".
12:11 AM on 04/13/2010
we live in a world where a device called the rape axe not only exists but is needed.

Exactly. That's why I don't get that when I express disappointment in my own species for creating something as vile as rape, the bleeding heart liberals attack me because, according to them, all rapists need is a big hug. They had bad childhoods and are just so misunderstood. Yeah, my bad.
11:35 PM on 04/12/2010
Great idea, and the police could wear them in their rectums to catch a Foley or a wide stanced republican.

Am I confused, or when the rapist's penis returns to its flaccid size would he not be able to remove it?

No
The multiple claw shaped barbs would still be embedded in the skin of the penis causing the "great discomfort" spoken of.

I think the 'rape pistol' is probably a better, and safer device? What DOES the lady have in her purse, or in her pocket, or strapped to her garter? Something you want no part of...
11:36 PM on 04/12/2010
No, when guns get into play it's too often the victim that gets shot dead.
11:39 PM on 04/12/2010
Wrong. Cite some statistics. THat sort of case is extremely rare if the victim has been trained to use firearms. Women are just as capable of men of pulling a trigger quickly.

In a lot of poor developing countries where this problem is widespread that isn't a option. This device is super cheap and effective
10:39 PM on 04/12/2010
How do you make sure that this is not used as a device to control women sexually..Like chastity belts in the middle ages. This might become popular for the wrong reasons.

A few centuries ago, there were indigenous civilizations in N. America where rape was almost nonexistent. The reason was simple. Any man who raped someone was tied to a pole inside a outhouse-sized hut. His testicular sac was 'pinned to the pole. Then the hut was set afire. He had a choice. Tear himself free, or burn to death. Not much rape occurred. But then, these societies had the strange belief that women and children were equal to men.

Native American Culture was diverse..Some Tribes where like vikings raiding,Raping and taking women as slaves. But in general I think they where more respecting of women than contemporary western culture that held women in contempt.
11:42 PM on 04/12/2010
It was the influence of Christianity which caused women to be painted as tempstresses in the West, not Western culture. Pre-christian European women, with the exception of the Greeks, had more rights than women in any other major civilization would until the past century of so.
11:18 PM on 04/12/2010
Name such a civilization where rape was almost non-existent because of brutish punishment.

Oh, and it's called a scrotum...

Why not a rape guillotine....have a device something like a Chinese thumb handcuff and this then releases sharp blades when withdrawn.

How about the ultimate 'birth control' device, the loaded .45, and the woman behind it that knows how to use it, and isn't having any of THAT kind of treatment...countries where women have gun rights and other rights probably have lower rates of rape...
11:28 PM on 04/12/2010
Why don't you actually try and figure that out before posting nonsense.

I do understand the concerns of those who are saying that this would only lead to an increase in non-vaginal rape and/or torture and murder, but from the article:
"Women already have been arming themselves with homemade defenses — a razor blade hidden in a vaginal sponge or razor blades glued to the inside of a plastic cap that is worn in the vagina."
Yikes! I have to believe this device is safer than a razor blade!
Pathetic that we live in a world where such a device is needed...but where can I get one?
11:43 PM on 04/12/2010
I agree with you. Apparently people don't like the idea of women taking their own safety into their hands though, so they will complain about this device even though rape can be a death sentence because of STDs and ANY little advantage helps- why else would these women already be resorting to homemade measures if that weren't true?
