First Posted: 06/13/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:05 PM ET

Text and photos from LIFE.COM, which you can visit for much, much more.

As part of HuffPost Green's Our Oceans project, we've partnered with LIFE to bring you images of both the glory and sad realities of our oceans. This LIFE exclusive takes us down into the ocean's depths to explore the wonders the exotic fish that live there.

What Lies Beneath

Near the ocean floor, bright exotic fish provide flashes of color in the dark depths. Pictured: A Yellow Tang fish, which only has its luster during the daytime, feeds on coral.

They have dropped the ball here. Some pretty pictures, but not much from the deep sea. Again, I'll say check out the Perspectives on Ocean Science lecture series on Youtube for some great pictures and educational material for an intelligent lay audience.

You posted what I was going to. Reefs don't grow in the "deep sea", and most of these fish are colorful, a sign that they *aren't* deep water fish. So lame title, Huffpo..

Well, huffpost didn't create the article, the descriptions, or provide the photos. Huffpost just re-posted it without fact-checking their articles... ;) It is originally from Life.com, see here: http://www.life.com/image/55909147/in-gallery/36882/exploring-exotic-deep-sea-fish

I have already written Life about the corrections, and I suggest you all do the same!

happy reefing! oh wait, that's another place...

Try this one for lots of great underwater pictures:

At about 17 minutes there are some real deep sea pictures and the tools the scientists use to get them. Plus pictures of sharks, the Antarctic, Imax filming and more.

Great Shots, I wish wildlife of all kinds would get more respect, they sure are better looking than us, except the "frilled shark" I guess...

In addition to what the previous comments said, I just wanted to emphasize that while it's not the only factor, this laziness when it comes to the simplest aspects of science is part of why Americans are falling farther and farther behind the rest of the "developed" world in science education. There hundreds of creatures that fit the headline (you didn't even need to include the echinoderm) that a google search would have turned up. Try going for accuracy instead of "OOO, look at the pretty fish!!"

It's cute....sorta...

Most of these aren't deep sea. Wake up huffpost. Stop making up nonsense.

Point in case: you lead off with a yellow tang, you can see these snorkeling in 5' of water. And they don't feed on corals, they feed on algae.

Yup...all reef fish. Clownfish exotic??? Headline just as misleading as the "Most Stunning Scuba Diving Moments".
