At long last, Twitter has unveiled its money-making strategy.

The site plans to introduce advertising for the first time ever in the form of 'Promoted Tweets,' which will allow companies to pay to have their sponsored messages appear at the top of users' searches.

How are Twitterers reacting to the paid tweets and introduction of advertising?

We've compiled users' reactions to the changes, and now we want to hear from you: What do you think of Twitter's new advertising plan?

I have to say that this is of course the blatantly obvious way for Twitter to "monetize" it's service since it is pretty much the exact same way every other "free" service in the cyber world makes its cash. If there are any Twits out there who didn't see this coming, they must also be surprised when the sun rises every morning.

I am willing to go to the effort of ignoring stupid ads if the service is useful enough. Personally, however, the annoyance factor of forced tweetverts now completely outweighs Twitter's already marginal utility to me, and I suspect, to many. It will be interesting to observe what this scheme does to the popularity of the service and whether Twitter can indeed deliver the eyeballs that advertisers are looking for.

Twitter has always had targeted advertising. You follow the brand.

I could never understand the point of a limit to post length. Most blogs or fan pages or whatever tend to police themselves because the overly verbose individuals get ignored. I personally never got much out of Twitter because with the limit you tend to get the first impressions off of someone rather than something which has some thought behind it. Or in other cases you end up trying to read someone's texting dialect because they want to compress several paragraphs worth of ideas into 170 characters.

Give me something with more room any day. Advertisements or not.

I would have no problem with ads as long as they are NOT in the stream but are instead on the website and a framework was built so that third party apps can display the ads in their client somewhere but as long as they are in the stream this is BS!

Twitter is a headline service for in-depth information and breaking news and opinion, and the fore-runner of a service yet to be created and offered— an essentially free, globally-connected population of the planet interface.

By introducing ads and force-pissing corporate bullshat into everyone's stream, Twitter is resorting to 20th century pig-think: Make sure the people can't take a dump without having to read a half dozen ads for useless consumer crap.

I just love how the biggest critics of Twitter are the ones who have never used it. #headbangondesk

Hey, they have to monetize it somehow. Did we expect them to just keep on giving it away? As long as I don't find the ads too intrusive, it won't affect me.

The issue here is how much do users get paid for the intrusion into their timelines? I am assuming that the Promoted Tweets will be visible within individual accounts as per the Twitter Blog - "regular Tweets (and) will be organically sent to the timelines". So, where's my end?

What? Twitter is not an altruistic enterprise dedicated to the unsullied distribution of pure, advertising-free, quality brain droppings? I am shocked! Shocked, I say!

Twitter has become two groups of people; 12 year old girls tweeting about Justin Bieber and then everyone else tweeting "who the hell is Justin Bieber?"

Well, I'm no Twidiot. I've blocked twitter.com on my router, so no messages and no website. Same goes for facebook.com linkedin.com and myspace.com. All forever blocked.
