First Posted: 06/15/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:10 PM ET

An apparent meteor in Wisconsin and Iowa lit up the sky around 10:10 p.m. Central Time last night.

The 'fireball in the sky' was seen by hundreds, causing a flood of social networking activity. Said one Facebook user, Renee DeVries, "It looked like a red flare and then it changed to a yellowish color and looked as if it was falling from the sky."

The AP reports that the meteor led to "rattling houses and causing trees and the ground to shake."

I haven't heard of any eye witness that saw the meteor in the Midwest on April 14th in the center of Wisconsin. I was in Stevens Point, WI that evening, at around 10pm I was standing outside and saw a huge bluish, purple, yellow, golden meteor with an extremely long fiery tail shoot right over from the North towards the South in the direction of Madison, which is approximately 109 miles from Stevens Point. It seemed close to the ground. I say this because of where I was standing. I was on a deck probably 8 feet off the ground looking to the east with the house to my right, or south of me. The meteor came over the tree line from the north, the back side of the property, and as it passed by it disappeared behind the roof line of the eastern half of the house.

To see a map of the location see map link below.

I saw it with my son, about 20 miles north of Madison. It has a brilliant white head with a yellow/orange tail that stretched about 10Ëš. It grew brighter as I watched, then broke into 4 or 5 red fragments before fading. At its peak it was considerably brighter than the moon-- bright enough to see the colors of grass and houses. There were no clouds in the way where we were.

Your sighting confirms the direction of the one I saw in Stevens Point. However, when I saw it the size seemed to be more like 20 feet.

I can explain this: 30 Seconds to Mars played Milwaukee last night. The great ones are always heralded by extraordinary phenomenon such as this.

I love NASA.

They tell us what to think.

I also like how the earth's magnetic field is shifting 25 miles a year since 2005 - I haven't heard a good official explanation for that one either.

The sun's activity is at an 11 year minimum.

I used to accept everything I heard on TV - now I am not so sure.

The earth's magnetic poles wander all the time. It's not very well understood, but it's hardly something new.

NASA doesn't tell anyone how to think. They report data and their theories, then, people who have little to no knowledge or experience in the field get confused and assume NASA is some kind of mind control device.

I saw a great one when I was a kid. Huge fireball blazing across the evening sky. Supposedly, it burned up completely. It was awesome though.

Looks like the finale of Angels & Demons. Anyway it's things like this and the asteroid that passed by recently that tell me our days are numbered. In astronomical terms, the asteroid belt is our next door neighbor. And that's just one way we could be extinguished by nature.

Utah had a meteor in November. I live at the top of a hill and have a pretty nice view out of my living room window, so I saw it as it traveled west. It was BRIGHT and rather alarming really. Last I heard they had found most of its remains near the Ibapah reservation near Wendover and Tooele ("too-ill-uh"....crazy spelling, I know).

Nevermind the dry toast local newscasters and experts; the meteor was quite cool.

NPR reported yesterday that there would only be very small pieces, nothing large enough to create a crater.

IMO, one of the best photos is from the University of Wisconsin- Madison.

It is shown above, however this is a larger size.
It may take 60 seconds for the time-lapse photos to begin.

Wrong, she would get Todd and Bristol and she would claim they had witnessed the birth of another Christ child and claim they were the Magi.

Am I just imagining it or have there been many more meteors coming to earth than normal in the last several years? Even I saw two the same evening last September, while I was watching an outdoor music concert. The first one was huge and was proceeding across the sky horizontally, the second was the standard high up flash of light burning out. I don't remember so many meteors or meteorites being spotted in such a short time span.

Yes, but not just any laser -- a "frigg'n" laser attached to a shark!
