Walt Minnick Tea Party Endorsement: Minnick Campaign Accepts

Minnick

The lone congressional Democrat to be endorsed by the Tea Party movement will accept the endorsement, even though his campaign is concerned about the optics.

Rep. Walt Minnick (D-Idaho) received the official electoral backing of the Tea Party Express (the largest group affiliated with the broader movement) on Thursday. The announcement was entirely unexpected for the Idaho Democrat -- the lone Democrat to get an endorsement nod from the group.

"It was a complete surprise," said John Foster, a spokesman for the Congressman.

And while Minnick is fine with the endorsement - "Um, sure," Foster replied when asked if the campaign was accepting the Tea Party's backing. "Walt is not in the habit of turning down support." The congressman is cognizant of the reception it could receive among the broader Democratic community.

"Being on a list with [lightning rod conservatives] Joe Wilson and Michele Bachmann is not something we are embracing," Foster said. "But we do appreciate that they recognize Walt's firm stance on fiscal accountability."

On the surface, it would appear that the Tea Party Express put Minnick on its support-list for the sole purpose of having a token Democrat. The group, after all, has long pledged that it isn't a stooge for the GOP -- though every other congress member they're supporting is Republican, and all their targets are Democrats.

But Foster tried to make a compelling case that the Minnick endorsement wasn't just window dressing. While the congressman had only spoken to the Tea Party Express once, it was during the infamously contentious August recess. "They invied all four members of Idaho's delegation and Walt shocked everybody by being the only one who showed up in person and he stood his ground," said Foster. "He got a lot of support for his fiscal stance. But very little support for what he said about the president [for whom he reiterated his support]... By the end of the 90 minutes they gave him a standing ovation."

"I think [the endorsement] is an indication of the work he has done here on the ground but more importantly being able to talk to anybody and look for common ground wherever he can find it," Foster concluded.

On policy grounds, as my colleague, Jason Linkin notes, the endorsement makes some sense as well -- though not entirely.

If the Tea Partiers had to back a Democrat, they could do a lot worse than Minnick, a freshman Congressman from Idaho's 1st District. Minnick is a member of the House's Blue Dog coalition, and cast votes against the stimulus package, the American Clean Energy and Security Act, and, most recently, the health care reform package. The Club For Growth has also praised him for his opposition to earmarks.

Of course, it's not a perfect fit. Minnick nevertheless found enough less consequential ways to have voted with the Democratic caucus 69.7% of the time. Also, he voted to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which is like the Obamacare of ensuring that women receive equitable compensation for the work they do.

National Review's Jim Geraghty, who supports the election of Vaughn Ward to Idaho's 1st District, has a "quibble" with the endorsement, saying, "Walt Minnick's first vote as a congressman was to make Nancy Pelosi the Speaker of the House, empowering her a great deal." Yes! That whole time Nancy Pelosi became Speaker did lead to a certain measurable amount of empowerment. This is a great observation!

Anyway, Walt Minnick is the one Democrat that nobody will draw a Hitler mustache on today, so he's got that going for him. We're checking to see if Minnick has accepted the endorsement.

This article was updated from its original version to incorporate Foster's remarks.

Idaho is a beautiful state, and there are some of us Progressives who live here. We were excited when Dem Minnick was elected....but sadly disappointed when he voted with the Rethuglicans on many of the important bills. Yes, he did replace the Rove arian like Sali -who was called "stoo pid" even by those in the state legislature who "worked" with him (in his same party)....but he votes like Sali-and that is no compliment.
We are trying to live down the connection with Sarah Palin and Idaho...this doesn;'t help.

Guns are often referenced with the Tea Party.

As if they are shooting people left and right that disagree with them.

Now, get a dose of reality.

Check the news from Detroit or Chicago. See who are the violent prone members of our society.
And they are more than likely not tea-baggers.

6 people killed in Chicago last night. The animals are starting early this year on their killing spree.

yes tea baggers are not as bad as mass murderer's, quite a low bar you are setting for yourself there.

It is not the reference to guns that bothers me but rather the comparison. There was a couple escorted from a bush rally for wearing an anti-bush T-shirt, while nothing is done to those people who come ARMED to similar rally's now. I think the distinction is clear

Wow, that would like the NAACP, ACORN, LARAZA, or other such groups endorsing a Republican.

Crazy man.

Unfortunately for themselves, the democrats have driven most party members with ideological leanings similar to Walt Minnick's right out of the party. If they are to survive, they need to move quickly in the other direction. Obama, Comrade Peloski, Dirty Harry Reid and the rest of the far left loons we have running things today have awoken a sleeping giant that is poised to stomp them into the ground where they belong. Change is coming alright and it will not be pretty for Obama and his cast of incompetent clowns.

The tea party may become like many other lobbying groups. If they stick to the platform of fiscal responsibility and accountability what's not to like? I think both sides can appreciate the fiscal irresponsibility the government has shown in recent decades. It's time to swing the pendulum back and make the federal government more fiscally efficient.

The tea party is about racism, hating liberals and electing right-wing, greed-mongering extremists. That's all it's about; that's all it's ever been about. The rest is fluff meant to fool people like you.
11:34 AM on 04/16/2010
and what are the leftist groups all about (acorn, laraza)?
racism.
greed.
taking from others what they haveN'T earned.
Demanding more for doing less.

And they PAY NO TAXES. At least the tea party people are taxpayers.
09:18 AM on 04/19/2010
Have you been to a tea party rally? If not, you cannot make these blanket statements. You are then basing you opinion on third party reporting and opinions. Which makes you as bad as you view them.

We Won!!!! So Get Over It....

Any candidate who wins because of the T Party will be "owned" by the T Party and they're a very demanding "mistress". I heard them yesterday at the National Press Club announcing whom they support. They clearly said they weren't endorsing Congressman who distanced themselves from the Party. It didn't matter if they were good Congressman or NOT. If they weren't licking the T Parties Arses they were OUT.
I guess endorsing this Blue Dog is their dismal attempt at bipartisanship.
If Scott Brown doesn't stop dissing the T Party after they contributed $350,000 to his campaign they're going to turn against him.
The T Party wants to tell their candidates how to vote. They think they're going to run this country. You can see it on their faces.

I wish more politicians would just say "if you support me great, but that does not necessarily mean i support you" I would have a lot more respect for em.

Idahoan Dems were excited when Minnick won...only to be deeply disappointed by his votes with the Rethuglicans on major bills. He had replaced a dim wit Rethuglican named Sali and for a time we thought we had shown that Idahoans can be intelligent and compassionate..but alas, it was not to be. Minnick's excuse for voting against healthcare, jobs bills. and the stimulus bill was he was voting the way his constiuents wanted. OK-who are your constiuents Minnick??If you think that you have to vote with the party of NO because you think that is what your constiuency is composed of...then change to R. The memory of Dems like Frank Church -just a memory in the reddest state of the union. Our lovely governor Butch Otter is front and center of the Tea Party movement....and is spending money we dont have-to fight the health care bill in court. All I can say is "Californian Democrats---please come up to beautiful Idaho and turn this state to blue"

This is the only money Butch has or will spend inappropriately:

As the second comment to the article points out, this will drive jobs to the out-of-state company to take-over. Besides this act, Otter has sustained a fiscal conservatory stance that the nation should envy.

As for Minnick being a Republican, your fault for voting for him without knowing his platform. Sure, I'd prefer Sali, but I'll take what Minnick's given.

I understand fiscal accountability. But what about the hate and rascisim. Not to mention the guns and threats of violence? Even Brown had the sense to snub them in Boston!
04:09 AM on 04/16/2010
I think all politicians should be able to vote their conscience as opposed to the Republican loyaty tests. I can respect that. But the Repubs are doing a disservice to their constituents by forcing all of their representatives to vote against anything and everything in an attempt to ruin the POTUS which could and would hurt the country.

And as far as near %100 support among black voters for President Obama, we voted for him for the same reason as the majority of non-black Americans, he was the most qualified for the job. This notion that we will vote for any and all black politicians is an insult. If that were true Repub Allen Keyes would have had %100 or Jesse Jackson, which was not the case. We are not a politically naive as popular opinion whould have you believe.
