Charles Ogletree: Sharpton Is Obama Link To The Streets

Charles Ogletree says Al Sharpton is Obama's link to the streets.

NEW YORK — The Rev. Al Sharpton is a "lightning rod" for President Barack Obama on inner city streets, Obama's former Harvard mentor and friend said Saturday at a forum in Harlem.

But Sharpton, who led the event, told The Associated Press that America's first black president "has to work both for us and for others," and that if Obama were to push a race-based agenda, "that would only organize the right against him."

Sharpton spoke on the last day of an annual conference organized by his National Action Network. Speakers included three members of Obama's Cabinet and Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, as well as Charles Ogletree, the president's Harvard Law School professor, now a friend.

"Al Sharpton has become the lightning rod in moving Obama's agenda forward," Ogletree told the AP, describing Sharpton as a conduit between the disadvantaged and powerful leaders. "And he has access to both the streets and the suites, to make sure that the people who are voiceless, faceless and powerless finally have some say."

Standing at the back of a balcony overlooking Harlem's ornate First Corinthian Baptist Church, the 57-year-old lawyer said that some black Americans may be disappointed the president they helped elect isn't doing more for them.

"And President Obama expected to do a lot more," said Ogletree, referring to the challenges Obama faces in two wars and the struggling economy. Still, he predicted, the new health care law would affect uninsured black Americans more than any other segment of the population.

But clearly, Sharpton was at the center of this forum. Saturday, the front page of The Washington Post featured a photo of him with a headline that read: "Activist Al Sharpton takes on new role as administration ally."

Sharpton chuckled at the notion.

"I've been as much in this White House as I was in George (W.) Bush's – it's only when Bush invited me to the White House, it was him reaching out; when Obama invites me, all of a sudden, we're allies," Sharpton joked during a break, sitting in a pew on the altar that served as a high-tech stage.

Amid a heated national debate over whether black leaders should align themselves with the president, Sharpton has defended Obama against criticism from television host Tavis Smiley that "black folk are catching hell" and Obama should do more to help them.

Black Americans, Sharpton said, "need to solve our own problems."

Sharpton told the AP that he is working to expand his Harlem-based organization to 100 cities from the current 42, with about 200,000 members, "and to really deliver against unemployment that is disproportionate in the black community, and for health care and education reform."

The four-day conference, focusing on a 12-month plan of action for black leadership, brought together prominent figures from dozens of fields, tackling topics as diverse as finding jobs for men leaving prison and federal subsidies for black farmers.

Sharpton's "12-month action plan" to better life for black Americans measures its success by individual goal-setting – "every day, every week, every month," said Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia.

Nutter has a big goal: to reach and teach a half million adults in his city who are considered "low-literate," which means they can read, technically, but have difficulty understanding a newspaper article or even a utility bill.

"It is impossible for parents to help their children if they can't read," said Nutter, who leads the largest American city with a black mayor. "It is almost impossible to lift yourself out of poverty if you can't function at a high enough level."

The President needs to help ALL Americans, not just blacks. Think of the race storm if people were whining that Clinton wasn't doing enough to help white americans. Now that the POTUS and the AG are black, the MAN is black, there need not be any more hipocracies or double standards. Let's get rid of the victim mentality and all move forward together.

When Sharpton apologizes for the Brawley case and the Duke lacrosse case I will not view him as much as the race-baiting poverty pimp who is stuck in the '60's, he is. Sorry, Al, you don't have ' whitey " to blame for everything anymore. That makes you irrelevant today. Black people deserve better and deserve to have someone who doesn't treat them as victims and weaklings who need his bullhorn

I want to know why 1/2 Rev, Inc. spends so much time sucking up to Fox news.

Great question. They need an affirmative action hire and he fit the bill. Plus, they were too lazy to find someone who actually represents black America. They could've thrown a dart out the window of Fox News Corp and hit someone on the street who would do a better job and who wouldn't race hustle their way around the country with a bullhorn.

What streets is he advising on?

The streets of Crown Heights where a he helped to foment a fatal riot?

The streets of NYC, where he tried to start a riot over Tawana Brawley? And ended up having a $345,000 judgment against him for slander for repeating Tawana's lies when he knew them not to be true. A judgment he never paid, due to claim of a vow of poverty. (Note a supporter finally paid when Al ran for President, so he wouldn't look like the creep he is) Slander that Al never apologized to Pagones for.

The streets of Washington DC, Home of the IRS. Where Al was under criminal tax evasion investigation. Ultimately the Criminal Tax evasion charges were dropped, in favor of a 50% penalty for civil fraud. (Fraud is still fraud, only he didnt have to go to jail) Big Al owed over $1 Million personally and his non profits also owed millions for their giant game of cash concealment.
This goes to show what a fraud the claimed vow of poverty was in the Pagones proceedings in attempt to collect the slander judgment.
But re: tax evasion, there seems to be a lot of that going around lately, especially where White House advisers are concerned. But then who cares about higher taxes if you aren't paying them?

Finally, does our POTUS's poor choice in friends and advisers say something about him?

Weil, I guess he's better than DC Councilman Marion Barry, who is a repeat drug offender and doesn'[t pay his taxes year after year. Living proof that we get the elected representatives we deserve.

But, please Google "Tawana Brawley" before you take Rev. Al too seriously.

97% of African American voted for Barack Obama. We are seeking something that would enhance our community just like EVERY other constituency that voted for him. Why is that when we want or ask for something it’s different?

Ha. Ha. Ha.

A perfect match... the hustler (Sharpton) and the boob (Obomba).

America is waking up.

For those who say Sharpton is racist I ask this: Since when does that bother you? You are most likely in a party that is at minimum 50% full of racists. In fact, its the glue that holds rethugs together. This isn't disputable.

so for the Democrats that think that Sharpton is a racist are you saying that it's not that big of a deal to them and just accepted?

I'm not aware of anything in either the Democratic or Republican platforms that is racist. Could you elaborate?

For dems that think Sharpton is racist, I say have at it. I don't care. It is white people who put him on TV. It is white people who watch him and white people who made him famous.

Let me tell you as an someone who lives in the "streets". Al Sharpton is not a conduit to us. He is a conduit to white liberals. The average black man doesn't even know what Al is talking about half the time and we certainly don't pay him any attention. Maybe in New York they follow him as a leader but outside of that, he is just a face on TV.

He may, from time to time, say things we want said, but again, that's for white people to hear. He doesn't lead us or influence us in the way some seem to think.

Republicans please take over congress and the senate and cut medicaid/medicare, social security disability, social security savings, and food stamps and all these others socialist programs so all these folks posting on this news piece can spend more time in lines begging for food, housing and prescriptions for their aliment, versus hating.

Most former Presidents put the interests of white Americans first. This President is putting all Americans first. People have to realize that high levels of unemployment has always been in the Black community because those who hold he wealth do not want to give Black people a chance at succeeding. You didn't see Blacks on the streets protesting the government, calling former Presidents horrible names and making threats against members of congress!

Too bad Obama is clueless on unemployment. His policy of bashing business isn't going to get them to create jobs.

You mean the businesses that got tax cuts? Or the ones that tanked the economy? Or do you mean the ones that send jobs over-seas?

Which bashing are you speaking of? The tax cuts? The tax incentives? The healthcare tax credits?

My bad, I forgot who was asking.
