Los Angeles White Supremacist Rally: LAPD Enters Tactical Alert At LA City Hall

LOS ANGELES — A white supremacist group rallied against illegal immigration in downtown Los Angeles Saturday as hundreds of counter-protesters gathered to shout them down in a tense standoff that included several arrests, thrown rocks and police in riot gear.

Police officers stood between the white supremacists and counter-demonstrators on the south lawn of Los Angeles' City Hall, where about 50 members of the National Socialist Movement waved American flags and swastika banners for about an hour.

The white supremacists, many of them wearing flack helmets and black military fatigue uniforms, shouted "Sieg Heil" before each of their speakers took the podium to taunt counter-protesters with racial, anti-Semitic and misogynistic epithets.

"We will meet you head on," one of the white supremacists, whose name could not be made out over the fuzzy public address system, warned the crowd from behind several phalanxes of police in riot gear.

Members of the Detroit-based group said they picked the location for their rally because of Los Angeles' large immigrant population. They accused some of the immigrants of stealing jobs and committing crimes.

Group members also said they were reacting to the recent number of street marches across the country encouraging legislators to enact reform that includes amnesty for some illegal immigrants.

National Socialist Movement regional director Jeffrey Russell Hall announced that the group would begin backing political candidates who agreed with their anti-immigrant message.

But much of the white supremacists' words were drowned out by such chants as "Hey hey, ho ho, Nazi scum have got to go" from the larger crowd of about 500 counter-protesters who held signs that read "Nazis: Get Out of Los Angeles" and "Racists Are Ignorant."

There was a brief flare-up of violence before the speakers arrived. A shirtless man was seen being escorted to safety behind police lines by a plainclothes officer as counter-protesters punched and grabbed at him. Blood could be seen at the base of the man's neck.

National Lawyers Guild executive director James Lafferty, who attended both as a legal observer and counter-protester, said he saw the man get into a fight with crowd members who saw his Nazi lightning bolt tattoos.

Police Commander David Doan said a second man who crowd members believed was sympathetic with the white supremacists was also assaulted during the rally. Both men were treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released.

As the rally ended, counter-protesters hurled rocks, branches and other items over the police line and into a parking lot where the white supremacists' had left their cars.

Some members of the group had trouble starting a black Ford Mustang and attempted to hook up jumper cables to their engine. They protected themselves from the flying debris by holding up swastika-emblazoned shields.

The white supremacists eventually gave up and pushed their car away so they could jump-start it out of range of the projectiles.

Doan said three or four counter-protesters were arrested for throwing items.

I find it funny that the only violence and beatings was done by the protesters> What ever happened to freedom of speech. These people have as much a right to speak out as anyone else just because you don't agree does'nt give you a right to violence or bullying people into silence. After all is that a tactic of the nazi's?

Why is it that so many Neo-Nazis who claim to be the "master race" usually look like one of Darwin's rejects?

These rallies occur in the South or on some backwoods somewhere without anyone noticing. It got coverage because it was done here in LA, with a violent clash from both sides.
Nativists and racist should not have a voice, confronting them on camera just brings major airtime for these idiots

they should follow their leaders example, and blow their own brains out.

I think that the anti-demonstrators would be more effective if they didn't show up to these types of protests at all. In the end they always seem to overstep their bounds and embarrass themselves and those with similar views. http://bit.ly/aaUkDn You become way less believable/credible when you act out in a harmful manner.

The only effective way to counter Nazis is through violence. Anyone that wants to relive the Holocaust is clearly not to be reasoned with, but smashed.

Violence is never the best solution, though it is often the easiest. Hatred should never stand unchallenged yet responding to it with violence is barbaric. Unfortunately, most of the people in this world are barbarians at heart. This is why the ignorance of the human race will eventually lead it to self-destruction.

These racists are marginal and the real action for serious racists today is the republican party which has the potential for concrete action against blacks and other minorities in the climate being created today. Despite of or because of Obama's election we are moving towards an extreme right wing government in the not too distant future.

Fellow Huffposts,

Violence is a reaction. I would like to respond differently.

I support free speech. No, this is not the "double-edge sword" thing.
The white supremacist have my full support, in speaking freely about their faith, beliefs, and plans for our nation. Any one, or group, has that right, under our laws.

The single edge...
You can not cut back. They have a right, and you have the right.
Some broke the law, throwing stones, and must be arrested.

Imagine:
A candidate comes out on a neo-Nazi platform. His supporters all HAIL a victory, and ask for your contributions, and vote. Or...would you rather they assemble hate groups, plan a secret overthrow of our government, and cover by joining a "Party" with a nice "catch-phrase" to garner support? One makes a claim, the other denies the existence.

It is not reverse psychology. It is the implementation of our Constitution. Surprised?
It is a single edge. The edge that separates Church, and State. The state is the people, and the church has no place in government. Got History?

I would like to be in the crowd of spectators. Letting them yell, threaten, and hate, I would stand silent.
Everyone around me would stand silent. No prayer, signs, or motion. To look at them with pity, until they leave, and we did not say a word.

What would that accomplish? They went looking for hate, and got home without a sound.

It be it,

Think clearly rather than constructing a straw man that you can debunk.
It feels as if I'm reading a faintly disguised support for hate groups.
03:58 PM on 04/19/2010
So supporting human rights to free speech and denouncing vigilantism is what you mean by supporting hate groups?

A man 'with lightening bold swastika tattoos' got into a fight.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that the 'lightening bolt' can ONLY be added to a tattoo if the person wearing the tattoo has proved himself - by actually killing someone.

The group was based out of Detroit so I think it's safe to say a lot of these guys aren't local. Of all groups in America Nazis are the ONLY ones I'd call anti-American. We fought a war to bring down those monsters, seeing them wrap themselves in the American flag is a desecration and perversion of everything the flag stands for.

Any person with common sense would know that the folks who employ illegal immigrants in exchange for cheap labor are the ones who these racist should have been targeting. But I have a feeling that they were just using this protest as an excuse to vent their racist hate and gain publicity, and what better way to do that by going to a large city with a large minority population and start trouble.

And I've never understood this -- these are supposed to be very pro-white supremacists, what's up with wearing black shirts, black pants, and driving around in a black car?

One funny thing out of all this, these mo ro ns ended up being humiliated by getting stuck in the heat of the moment with car trouble while having to endure trash being thrown at them in the process.

I am a US citizen living in Germany for a long time. If these Neonazis were alive in Hitlers time...they would have been the "einsatzkommando" troops. Murderers who went in before the army to get rid of the unwanted population.

I have never imagined possible, white supremacist rally in Los Angeles!!!
