Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull Volcano PICTURES: Incredible Photos Of The Eruption, Ash Cloud

First Posted: 04-18-10 11:15 PM   |   Updated: 04-19-10 09:41 AM

A cloud of volcanic matter has risen over much of Europe from the erupting Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland. A major eruption occured on April 14, 2010, resulting in a plume of volcanic ash being thrown into the atmosphere. Air traffic has been subject to cancellation or delays as airspace across parts of Northern Europe has been closed.

Below, some of the most powerful photos of the eruption.

It's nice to be reminded that, even though we think we are, we ain't in charge here.

As much of an inconvenience to the stuck travelers, I'd much rather the airlines wait until it is safe than just push through the storms in order to satisfy their wallets and the people's patience. If they didn't wait, and something tragic happened, we would see articles saying, "Airlines' Impatience Kills Hunderds".

My Uncle is stuck in Germany, and I would be furious with his airline if they grew too impatient and risked lives to stop the loss of money. The world would be a sad(der?) place when priorities become so obviously wrong.

Try as that volcano might, it still isn't producing as much hot air as one Rush Limbaugh show.

What strikes me is the one photo of the vent, clear as day. It obviously has NOT blown up.

This is, believe it or not, an ORDERLY eruption. Heaven help us if something were to really explode.

Somebody should ask Rush to explain in more detail why God is punishing Europe for Obama's healthcare reform.

I was just thinking that all that power being released, all that tectonic moving near the volcano. To me means one thing...Earthquakes, 7.2+ in the areas of Italy, Grece or Turkey. I'm estimating within 90 days.

Why only in the regions you mention?

I would also like to understand your reasoning and logic on this one. Please respond.

All the major regions have released their energies...The mentioned regions haven't reacted in the past two years, nothing, zip nada, not even 2.5' ves anywhere near. If you recall Chile was also very quiet Except the Caribean region was going nuts and still is going nuts. I stand with the prediction.

This type of thing has been occurring for millions of years, yet some people are gullible enough to think a few decades of combustion engine exhaust is destroying the ecosystem.

Oh, well in that case, the millions of years are a pittance.

I'm an ancient boomer, as you can see, but I don't recall anything like this in the last fifty years of aviation history. Mt St Helens certainly threw up a lot of ash, and shut down local flights, but its location was largely irrelevant to world traffic. Amazing event.

Is there lava? What's happening on the ground?
11:21 AM on 04/19/2010
Currently the volcano is producing some lava. More volcanic activity and ash expected. Local farmers are worried for their animals and hoping for winds and rains to clear away all the fallen ash from their fields. The rescue workers standing by if more floods occur and people need evacuation.

You Icelanders have watched these events closely over the centuries, but probably have not seen enough events in 1000 years to make many reliable specific predictions. Just, lots of destruction, right, and one just hopes it misses inhabited areas?

But this is NOT the "big one" that Iceland is capable of delivering to the world. The eruption in 1812 was far bigger, right? Blotted out the Northern Hemisphere for a year of "no summer".

I guess I'm looking at this as, "how long?" and "will it get worse?", and thinking how much damage nature can do -- and no one can cause it or prevent it.

I usually don't like these HuffPo slide shows. Too many of them are of mindless celebrities, their shoes, their dresses, their vacation homes, the house they just bought.

But the photography of this ecological/environmental event in nature is amazing.

I give it a 5 star rating.

Hey, good morning. Great to wake up to funny haha first thing.
Glad you picked an American icon for your fatty joke. Most excellent. She does indeed represent all Americans. Gluttonous and arrogant, I take it from your joke that she represents you and your fellow countrymen and women, yes? The fattest nation without health care in the world. Boy, go get 'em America, you're the best country in the world, even in your words...smart smart humour. Congrats, planetjeffy...for representing so well the character of the true American spirit.
07:18 AM on 04/19/2010
Your style of argument undercuts any validity what you are saying might have. You can't just scream and shout randomly and expect it to mean anything. The joke, though not funny, was just that, a joke, and not a statement of anything else. You don't know anything about planetjeffy - though you no doubt made an enemy today of him. Not smart. You ought to consider what you write before writing such nonsense (which is fueled entirely by stereotype and not actual knowledge, I suspect.)
