Obama Wall Street Speech Set, President Will 'Go Big' On Reform

Obama

First Posted: 06/19/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:10 PM ET

In late August, when town hall protests were putting the prospects of health care reform in doubt, the president's senior advisers convened in the White House to decide a best path forward. They needed to "go big," as one aide put it. But how would they do it? The group ended up settling on a major address to a bicameral gathering of Congress, laying out the reasons that reform legislation had to happen.

Nine months later, with health care reform now passed, the administration finds itself once again embroiled in major legislative gridlock with Republicans. This time the issue being debated is financial regulatory reform. Once again, Obama is going big.

The White House announced on Monday that the President will deliver remarks on the need to create new rules for Wall Street from the proverbial belly of the beast. Obama will travel to New York City on Thursday to give a major speech at Cooper Union, during which he will call for "swift Senate action" on financial regulation, according to Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

The speech is designed in obvious consideration of the timing and optics of the issue. During the dog days of the Democratic primary more than two-years ago -- when the economy was stumbling but not yet at its nadir -- Obama spoke at Cooper Union to make an early pitch for changing the rules of Wall Street. (Just how unforeseen then was the extent of the forthcoming economic collapse? Obama's proposal that day was for homeownership relief and an additional, quaint $30 billion stimulus package)

HERE IS VIDEO FROM THAT ADDRESS:

On Thursday, the president seems likely to revisit that trip from two years ago, as a method for underscoring the need to finally produce legislative results. The content of the president's remarks aren't yet known. The speech is still being crafted. But a White House aide sent over the following background information to the Huffington Post.

A little less than a year ago Secretary Geithner released a white paper laying out a comprehensive framework for financial reform. We've been making steady progress on those proposals. We passed them through the House in the fall and now we're reaching a crucial moment in the Senate. The President wants to remind Americans what is at stake. We're coming up on the second anniversary of the financial crisis in a few months. It's time to move forward in passing financial reform.

Someone (Riverhippy) seriously posted this below, in response to my joke that Republicans have no bank-reform proposal, which is being brought to you by Republican Leader John "Spray-Tan" Boehner, and Co.

I first thought this was a joke too, where some hackers loaded up B.S to teh Republican website, but now I think it is real. Read it, but please don't pi// your pan†s.

Please note:

Chris Dodd drafted the Senate version of so-called “Financial Reform” with the support of the President. The procedure used to date resembles the non-transparent and secretive tactics used to pass ObamaCare. The Senate Banking Committee marked up the bill in 22 minutes, with no amendments offered and no debate allowed. Now, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Obama are trying to rush the bill to the floor before the American people have a chance to understand that it contains a hidden, permanent bailout fund.

Indeed.

I cannot wait for the blithering ditherer's explanation of regulating derivatives, I'll bet he can't define it in less that 30 minutes, if he tries, nobody will stay awake for the ending.

I hope by "go big" President Obama means to also pressure Sen. Dodd to close all the loopholes that his legislation leaves open for the benefit of the big banks

like not closing a loop hole that lets hedge fund managers be taxed at the lower capital-gains tax rate (15%) instead of the higher income tax rate (34%)

I'm still reading other stuff, trying to figure things out and not relying on a single source to help me decide how I feel about this but so far... Dodd's legislation may be kind to some of the snakes that gamble w/ the stability of the American economy

It's all about the haves and have nots
there is no middle ground
many people being left to rot
no security to be found

The rich just get richer
the rest cant make ends meet
its not a pretty picture
when people cant afford to eat

Something drastic better change
the wealth needs to be evened out
it's time for it to be rearranged
so others won't go without

Financial reform is necessary to keep America safe. We can't afford another financial meltdown with banks and other financial entities cheating and gambling the country into instability. This is not a Democrat or republican issue. It is for the good of America. Republicans are hell bent on being the most dishonest evil thugs in government. They will start their lying, whining about no bipartisanship and confusing their stupid base with fear and smear. It is getting very tiresome. President Obama got contributions from a lot of sources but that does not mean he will not do what it so important to our well-being. Republicans are for corporate greed and they are not even trying to be honest about anything.

dave,
Silly. One of the powers of the presidency is to own the bully pulpit, that's in the job description. Also, his light jokes aren't taunts, if the president of the US ever fails to say something about taxes on April 15, then you know s/he's bats_it insane.
To truly believe that Obama merely speaks instead of acts then your other half, which complains about how Obama is taking over the country, is to hold two completely opposing beliefs. No matter what I say, you'll continue to write about what you know is truth, regardless of what anyone except your talkinghead of choice, says.

Obama has been president for only a year, and he has already done well by weeding out corruption on Wall Street. George Bush had eight years and all he did was to put us in an unjustified war with Iraq, when indeed it was not Iraq that caused 911, and neither did they have weapons of mass destruction. George Bush disrespected the United Nations by going to war with Iraq, when the Community of Nations told him not to. Let's not forget that Obama inherited two wars from George Bush. It is confusing about how the United States is going to win the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan, while President Kazai is heavily on drugs and threatens to join the Taliban?

If anything, I think the cap on payroll taxes is being remove...which means people making more than (I think) $106,700 will continue to pay into SS and Medicare...

Not raising the taxes but levying them on more things (like incremental dividends and capital gains for certain people making a lot of money). Or else you can believe the Reps, who say we can have it all and lower taxes too. Been there, tried that. It didn't work, it can't work, it won't work.

NewsFlash - People call on Obama to "shut up" and no new taxes!

Overall, 47% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the
President's performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) disapprove.

Forty-seven percent (47%) of voters believe repeal of the health care
law will be good for the economy, although 33% disagree.

The president has said the health care plan will reduce spending
on Medicare by several hundred billion dollars. But most voters
(53%) believe any changes to Medicare or Social Security should
be approved by a vote of the American people.

What did you expect when the GOP and their buddies go on the airwaves and spout one lie after another (death panels ring a bell for you)? When all the voters hear are lies endlessly 24/7 you think its a surprise when they are believed? Wasn't it Beck that said any lie told often enough becomes "common knowledge"? Its still a lie but many believe it is truth because it is said over and over again. GOP are factless and totally bankrupt in the honesty department.
09:20 PM on 04/19/2010
But I thought Obama had sold everyone on himself. Is that Fox's fault?
As for the pill. Need I remind you Obama did say (says a lot of things) that yeah maybe if it was his grandmother, she might have to take the pill.

Does that ring a bell?

Isaac Newton invented the method of "fluxions", which we call calculus. With it he was able to show that celestial bodes move in ellipses acted on by a centeral force located at one of the foci whose strength obeys an inverse square law.

DemoRats running for cover from BAD HR LAW fallout, now no end in sight to taxes on the American people. I can't wait for Obama to tout the unconstitutional BAD HR LAW that he calls reform when he talks about Financial markets reform.
07:28 PM on 04/19/2010
Love the way you float your opinions as if they were facts. Let's see about the unconstitutional HR law. Several states will be pushing that GOPer agenda and all indications are that they will fail. Why does it take so many to sue if they are so sure it's unconstitutional? Seems like one would be enough... unless people are just trying to make political hay out of nonsense.

Notice how ID and VA were racing to have the first law against the healthcare bill passed "before" the bill became law. ID won, but they've both since been joined by another ~12 state AGs. Using tax money to make political hay for themselves is exactly what they're doing. It's a waste of time and money, but there are enough people and media outlets to let the AGs slide so that it won't be a big deal anymore.
Remember this, when their charges are ruled "without merit" there will be more news stories, as if it was ever a queston. The only way to put this all to rest would be to make the AGs personally liable for acts that a first year law student could tell them is frivolous.

The magnetic field of the earth is believed to originate from a self-sustaining magnetohydrodynamic dynamo in the liguid iron/sulfur outer core. This field is characterized by wandering poles and occasional reversals. The sequence of reversals shows little or no periodicity and can be cosidered chaotic.
