Volcano Ash Cloud's Jet Damage: NATO F-16 Fighter Jets Suffer Engine Damage

SLOBODAN LEKIC   04/19/10 02:53 PM ET   AP

BRUSSELS — A senior Western diplomat said Monday that several NATO F-16 fighters had flown through a cloud of volcanic ash and that that one had suffered engine damage.

The official, who could not be named under standing regulations, declined to provide further details on where or when the incident happened. He said only that glasslike deposits were found inside the plane's engine after a patrol through European airspace.

But Bo Redeborn, an official of the European air traffic agency, said later that the F-16 belonged to the Belgian Air Force.

The incident highlighted the danger of flying through the ash clouds that have paralyzed civilian air traffic over much of Europe over the last five days.

Volcanic ash tends to stick to a jet engine's interior parts, such as the turbines, where it melts to form a glassy coating that restricts air flow. It also can clog the tiny cooling holes on the jet's fan blades, leading to overheating and eventual engine failure.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday that the ash cloud was not affecting the alliance's military readiness, although he declined to comment on specific missions.

"I can assure you that Icelandic volcano does not have any effect on our operations, nor our territorial defense of the allied member states," he said.

Addressing reports that some troop flights across Russia and Central Asia to Afghanistan had to be delayed due to the closures of air space and other air traffic restrictions, he stressed that operations in Afghanistan had not been affected.

"Our air forces will always take necessary steps to ensure they are capable to conduct their operations," Fogh Rasmussen said.

NATO officials said two of the alliance's Boeing E-3A early warning planes were moved on Thursday from their base in Germany to an airfield in Italy, and were conducting regular patrols from there.

Good thing we didn't send a B2 bomber, those things can't even fly through rain.

Can't say that it makes one iota of sense to have any jets flying while the ash is in the air.

How long does it take to have so much glass fused onto the interior of the engine before it fails catastrophically?

See what I mean?

How about propeller planes? Does the ash effect them?

Yes, it clogs up the air intake filters, scours the windscreen and pits the propellors.

If you remember Mt. St. Helens, they found the ash a problem to drive cars through. People were using nylons over the air filters and having to replace a lot of brake linings!

How much does a F16 replacement engine cost? How long does it take to test the engine & install it? What does it cost to test & install 787 engines? Who finds & buries the bodies when an airliner crashes?

Looks like a few job openings there!

What the ............................?
02:02 PM on 04/19/2010
OK, so a couple of airlines has said they flew planes in and near the smoking volcano with no damage. But fighter jets have flown, coming back with glass covering the insides of the engines. Also stated that the planes still were flyable. But doesn't this cause long term damage that can result in bringing down a plane at a later date? I don't mean to cause problems but I don't think I would want to chance getting on a plane that flew, with no trouble now, only to have something happen later.

The engine parts coated with glass beads must be replaced.

That's OK - we've got billions and billions to throw in the direction of these planes - and any excuse to spend money on them is as good as another...

Hasn't it already proven to cause damage to planes if you fly through it. So why fly through it?

When you've only got the one engine, you kind of want it to keep running.

The F16s have a massive intake. What a bonehead move to fly through that stuff!

How many planes have crashed due to this? Just curious...
10:41 AM on 04/19/2010
There have been several near catastrophes. Check out Speedbird Flight 009 (speed bird fyi is the call sign for British Airways) and KLM Mt. Redoubt for information on what happens when an aircraft flies through a volcanic as cloud.

Just to play Pat Robertson for a moment. . . The volcano was God's retaliation against a Gay war.

No, it was God's retaliation for our failure to put Pat Robertson in a padded cell 15 years ago.

A little OT, this weekend some decided to rail against the President for not flying to Poland, they seemed to think it was OK for him to put his life at risk. Even though the airports in Poland were closed and most of the European airspace was shut down. They still thought he should go.

Well, the most technological air/space craft may not land today because of RAIN! The shuttle! Maybe some of the haters need to think before they comment. You may not like the mans politics, as I didn't care for Bush's, but I NEVER wished Pres. Bush harm. Too many of you were almost demanding Pres. Obama put himself at risk, says alot about you!

For the Railers it didn't matter.

Had he gone it would have been a vacation at taxpaers' expense.
If there'd been damage to AF 1 they'd sue for destruction of government property.

It doesn't matter what he does, they will find a way to spin it to criticize him

What's sad is they actually don't realize how petty and hypocritical they look.

Some people thought he should still have gone? Where was the plane to land if airports were and are still closed?

Dear airline passengers? Who cares? It's about the bottom line and keeping the government out of private business, right?
