Arizona Immigration Law Sparks National Uproar

First Posted: 06/20/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:15 PM ET

In late April, Arizona passed a sweeping and controversial immigration bill authorizing police officers to stop suspected illegal immigrants and demand proof of citizenship.

The law has sparked a national uproar, with politicians, pundits and citizens weighing in. The Huffington Post is keeping track with a regularly-updated compilation below.

Students Withdraw From Arizona Universities In Reaction To Law
1 of 35
In a letter to the school, University of Arizona President Robert Shelton said the college is feeling the effects of the state's new immigration law -- by losing students.

He wrote:
We have already begun to feel an impact from SB1070. The families of a number of out-of-state students (to date all of them honors students) have told us that they are changing their plans and will be sending their children to universities in other states. This should sadden anyone who cares about attracting the best and brightest students to Arizona.

Additionally, large numbers of UA students, faculty, staff and appointed professionals have expressed concerns that they or members of their families or their friends may now be subject to unwarranted detainment by police. Many of these individuals are from families that have been residents of Arizona for generations. While I am completely confident that no one need fear the way that UAPD will approach the application of this law, I nevertheless appreciate the anxiety that friends and colleagues are feeling. It is a concern and fear that no one should have to harbor.

An Arizona State University spokesman told Inside Higher Ed that the school has gotten "several phone calls of applicants saying they won't come now."

And according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, Maricopa Community College Chancellor Rufus Glasper thinks the new law will inhibit some students from enrolling in college in the first place:
"...The many Latino citizens and lawful immigrants who attend college now face the offensive and discriminatory prospect of incessant demands to show their documents," he said. "We can expect that some will find this prospect discouraging and will discontinue their pursuit of education and training as well."

Arizona students: What are your plans and thoughts?

I swear I'll say it to my dying day. Just stop giving them jobs and they will either go back home or starve. It won't be done because the rich want low-wage workers. Take away the business licence of anyone who hires a non-citizen. Our people need those jobs.

I hear alot of talk where I'm from about this so-called "Revolution" thats coming from Mexicans. Let me start off by saying what a joke that is, they can't even run their own country and they think they're gonna come here and overthrow the U.S.? And for those who claim we "stole" their land, they need to brush up on their history. Sam Houston and his boys put a hurtin' on the Mexicans and they signed over the rights to the land, so we never stole anything! I also have to say that I absolutely support SB1070, seems to me the ones that have a problem with it are probably illegal anyway, if you're here legally why should you worry? Texas_Seccesion!!!!!
12:36 PM on 06/16/2010
Why don't you find a good coolege in Mexico to attend? Problem solved!!
09:21 PM on 06/16/2010
oh wow! i sure hope you are not planning to attend college....or should i say "coolege?" because if you do then this nation is screwed...
01:39 AM on 06/17/2010
Nation's already been screwed for awhile. They'll keep blaiming it on illegal immigrants. Affirmative Action , or al-Qeada for text- messaging and not knowing how to spell out a whole word. At least their not blaming it on slavery.

You must be in this country illegally, because any tax paying citizen would commend the state of Arizona for upholding our constitution, which was written for citizens of the United States. Citizens of this country are sent to prison for tax evasion. Why would you think it is ok for an illegal immigrant to be here and not pay taxes and have to penalty for it. Arizona doesn't want to go bankrupt by giving free benefits to people who havent payed into our system.

Week Vacation for Illegals

I propose that a one week, national vacation for all undocumented workers in the US might have quite an impact. We may not like the fact that they entered the country illegaly. However, all information that I see indicates that they are an integral part of our economy.

The phonies who claim there efforts will stem the tide of illegal immigrants are misleading us all. If they want to stop it, the real target is the CEOs of companies who employ them in mass. Raid some of the meat packing plants, and then arrest their CEOs.
04:40 PM on 06/14/2010
I have a good idea, just stop them from being allowed to claim 5 dependants on their w-2's when they get a job. This way they will be forced to pay taxes and I will have no problem with them being here if they are paying what I pay every week!!!!!

I think one of the great things about higher education 'going digital' is that you'll see a lot less people from foreign countries showing up in the United States just to go to school, and as a consequence, you'll also see a corresponding reduction of on-campus political temper tantrums.

Federal immigration law is pretty straightforward, and the reason there's all the yelling and screaming is because some of the folks that run these colleges, and probably some city administrators, too, are finally starting to realize that political sympathy isn't the same as being on the right side of the law, and the way they've been operating might have been lucrative, but has unintended consequences to go along with it. College campuses are also notorious for drug use. Anyone for a big tax break?

Why Are Americans Moving to Mexico?
Mexico Drug War Doesn't Stop Americans From Moving South of the Border
....It sits on a street dubbed "Gringo Gulch," a pretty row of baby blue, violet, and mustard facades where expatriates outnumber Mexicans.
It is not the climate," says Mr. Engle, explaining why he moved to the Yucatán Peninsula. "It is the people. It is the most welcoming place."

Arizona's law is not into affect and illegals are whining as they may be sent back IF stopped for a traffic violation, not how they look. What we are doing is below what the Fed's are supposed to do. Obama will visit safe places in Afghanistan and along the oil spill coast, but he fears coming to the Mexico border? He gives Matt Lauer "Today show" more time than our Governor. If he doesn't have time for a Governor, then he doesn't have time for the American people. He is buddy with Mexico's President and allows Mexico to put down the U.S.A. without speaking out for OUR country, Why? As his wife said on youtube, quote, "My husbands home country of Kenya." Obama's hostile to American values, customs, he's a threat to homeland security. He's transparent as a Ft. Knox vault. Behind door deals, getting us of focus of the gun treaty Hillary is pushing through a loophole we focus on the spill.Could it be Obama's addministration had their hands in the explosion, as they take away our Second Amendment right's? I wouldn't doubt it. I say "WE THE PEOPLE" must take back America before it's to late like the economic collapse I've said was coming since 1986 and was called a fool for thinking that. IF we don't do something FAST, WE MAY JUST WAKE UP TO FIND WE DON'T HAVE A COUNTRY ANYMORE. Wake up, Stop this socialist/communist islamic Obama before it's to late. God bless America,,,AMERISAM.

Oh, we'll have a country, but the country is changing/being changed, by forces and dynamics larger than even the Obama administration. Part of the immigration brouhaha is a lot of external foreign pressure to relax US immigration laws. People outside want to move in. Unfortunately, they'd also like to take over. And, now that we've given them lots n lots of money for oil, goods, and drugs to beat us over the head with, they'd like to remake the US the way they want it, which has been the story of the country since Ponce De Leon first became a 'dry foot' immigrant. Hope ya like lots of neighbors, it's about to get crowded! LOL

Build a fence around Arizona and require its citizens to obtain a visa to visit the United States.
01:09 PM on 06/09/2010
Oh really?! Arizona IS part of the United States.... go back to school to refresh your memory. And by the way, What part of illegal do you not understand????!!!!!!. I waited eleven years to be able to come to the US and I have been a proud US Citizen for 25 years. If you want to be part of this country then do it the right way. And people have to stop demanding rights they should not have. If you are here without proper documents; then you are breaking the law and need to be sent back. All the other countries have laws that protects them from illegal immigration... why can't we do the same?

Well, you have no further to look than our Keystone Kops politicians...it's a laugh a minute, a regular madhouse, until you realize that some of them MIGHT actually be insane, or just plain crooks, in either case have long turned a deaf ear to the public in favor of opportunities, real or percieved, and, of course, the ever-popular Large Sums Of Money. In other words, the politicos really don't give a tinker's damn about laws, because the day they have to follow them, too, they're out of business.
09:29 PM on 06/16/2010
"and people have to stop demanding rights they should not have?"
Oh so undocumented people are no longer humans? last time I checked being human-according to the United Nations and its contributing states[which the U.S.A. is a big supporter]-have the right to not be discriminated in any way, including racial profiling.
The UN also says that humans have the right to receive pay for work done, no matter if you are illegal or not in ANY nation

1,324,694 for checking status and 55,116 against it. Americans want enforcement. This is why other states will enact the same law next year.

Illegal entry into any country must be considered and balanced with illegal departure from a country. While nations may determine how foreigners may enter and who may enter, and criminals of nations typically may not leave those nations, law abiding citizens in the free world are expected to enjoy the privilege of leaving their countries at their own discretion with an equal right to return.
Restriction on departure for law abiding citizens is often considered totalitarian and/or repressive.
To Mexico's credit and Cuba's discredit.
01:22 PM on 06/09/2010
NW1, this has nothing to do with Cuba's failed totalitarian system of illegal departure from the island. This is about illegal immigration into the US, mostly Mexicans, to Mexico's discredit. People who sneak into this country illegally because their country has failed them and then try to demand rights in the US instead of protesting and demanding rights in their own corrupt countries. Immigrants are welcome in the US as long as you do it properly and wait in line just like everyone else.

"... This is about illegal immigration into the US, mostly Mexicans, to Mexico's discredit."

Thanks for validating the argument that the law has a racial or nationality bias.

Well, I'm in favor of legal immigration, but I'm not in favor of 'bums rush' immigration, legal, or otherwise. One of the terms you hear bandied about in the US/Mexico debate is 'reconquista', or 'reconquest'. Phrases like 'you stole our land from us', that kind of thing, kind of point to a philosophical disconnect between some 'immigrants' and the current lawful residents of the United States. We also have many multitudes of guilt-ridden liberals who are very apologetic about the whole thing, in a sort of 'lets give ourselves back to the British' sort of way.
Mexico is a bustling country of some 110 million people, perfectly capable of supporting itself, but chooses not to, because it's much more economical to simply chase the poor folks across la linea, where they can chew on the border from the inside like a bunch of little termites, and their departure also makes way for some beautiful haciendas and rancheros, where many tons of illegal narcotics can be processed daily and shipped to the US on the backs of 'immigrants' (wink wink, nudge nudge)
08:52 AM on 06/03/2010
There are really two sides to this story. Some say that illegal immigrants are taking away American jobs. Others say that they help the economy by doing the jobs no one wants to do for a rock bottom price. Is this subject important for you? Do you think it will change something in America? You better say what you think on http://immigration.civiltalks.com/ , otherwise nobody will know what you think.

There is a training video being sent to the AZ police to help them determine who is and isn't illegal. That video leaked last night. Warning, it contains foul language so if you are at work bring your headphones & sense of humor.

Your right we won't round them up we will take a way the reason to stay here by enforcing the same laws that we citizens obey.

We impound the cars that have no license, registration and insurance. These words sound familiar??

We fine the employers the cost of deportation and lock up the biggest abusers thereby removing the jobs. We replace them with citizens of this country who believe or not need work to support their families. Here at our home.

As a homeland security issue we require proof of citizenship or a valid visa to lease a place to live. We check for pedophiles.

Actually we just take away all the special treatment and enforce the law and they will go the same way they got here. By choice.
