NBC News President Steve Capus says he misses seeing former "Today" show host Katie Couric on his network.

In a chat with MarketWatch's Jon Friedman, Capus said that Couric has grown more comfortable at the "CBS Evening News," but he still thinks she was born for the "Today" show.

"I miss the fact that Katie is no longer at NBC," Capus said. "She's a friend of mine, and I think that Katie was born to do the 'Today' show. I thought that was a format that absolutely fit Katie's incredibly strong talents. I think the 'Evening News,' at the beginning, was difficult for her to put her fingerprints on, just as it was difficult for Brian Williams to put his fingerprints on. I think everybody who goes into a job like that takes some time to try to find their own voice...I would argue right now that Katie and Brian are both doing that on their broadcasts."

Capus wasn't able to explain why Couric trails Williams' "Nightly News" and Diane Sawyer's "World News" in the ratings.

"When I watch, Katie seems to be comfortable doing what she's doing. I think she and Rick Kaplan have done a good job with the broadcast. The ratings are the ratings. I think the audience gets to vote every night. We're happy, we're not gonna say no to our leadership position," he said. "I'm not smart enough to figure out why this one works for the ratings or that one doesn't work, but I think clearly they've spent a lot of time working on their broadcast over there and good for them," he said.
