A 2-year-old girl died from her injuries Thursday after she was shot in the head while sitting in a car with her father and her two sisters on the South Side.

Cynia Cole, known as "Coco" by her family, was shot about 11 p.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of East 92nd Place, according to NBC Chicago. The child was in the vehicle with her 25-year-old father and her sister's, ages 8 months and 4 years. The vehicle was pulled over as Cynia's mother went into a home to buy cigarettes, according to the Chicago Tribune.

That's when a gunman stole out of an alley and shot into the tunk of the car. The bullet traveled through the back window of the car and through the back seat hitting Cynia.

The 4-year-old sister screamed that her sister was shot and the father sped away, leaving the mother behind. When he came back the father's mother, a nurse, applied pressure to the wound until an ambulance arrived.

Investigators told NBC they believe the shooter was targeting the girl's father, who has gang ties and was convicted of armed robbery in 2003.

The Chicago Tribune reports Cynia was shot behind her ear and was in intensive care at Comer Children's Hospital with severe brain swelling. She died just before noon Thursday.

Cynia's mother told police she recognized the shooter and gave a description to police, The child's father told reporters that a friend of his is in Cook County Jail, accused of trying to kill the man police are seeking for shooting Cynia.

Police told NBC the shooting could be connected to a string of recent shootings in the neighborhood over the past few days.

On Wednesday, a 27-year-old man was fatally shot on his porch nearby and another man was murdered in his car Tuesday morning.

"She's only 2 years old she's a baby," Lyons told NBC. "There's no reason this should have happened."
