FILE - The March 2, 2009 file photo shows Augsburg's Bishop Walter Mixa during the bishops conference in Hamburg, northern Germany. Mixa is offering his resignation after a flap over allegations of physical abuse and financial misconduct, his hometown newspaper reported Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Augsburg Bishop Walter Mixa wrote a letter to Pope Benedict XVI Wednesday evening offering to resign as bishop and as Germany's Roman Catholic military chaplain, the daily Augsburger Allgemeine reported

BERLIN — A leading conservative Roman Catholic bishop in Germany has written to Pope Benedict XVI offering to resign amid persistent allegations of physical abuse of children and financial misconduct, the Augsburg Diocese said Thursday.

Bishop Walter Mixa wrote a letter to the pope on Wednesday, the Augsburg diocese said in a statement, offering to step down in hope of allowing a "new start" for his diocese. He said he would cooperate fully with investigators and offered an apology.

"I ask the forgiveness of all those to whom I may have been unfair and to those who I may have caused heartache," Mixa wrote, acknowledging that he was "fully aware of my own weaknesses."

The Vatican does not comment on possible resignations.

Mixa was unavailable for comment, his diocese said, adding he had "retreated for the time being."

Mixa has been accused of hitting children while a priest decades ago. He initially denied ever using violence against youngsters in a televised interview, but after intense pressure, acknowledged several weeks later that he may have slapped children years ago.

Although the case does not involve any allegations of sexual abuse, Mixa has been a key member of Germany's Bishops Conference for more than a decade and his initial denial of physical violence fueled frustration among German Catholics who saw it as fresh evidence that the church was unwilling to come clean on the issue of abuse.

"The step was long overdue. I don't understand how he could withhold it for such a long time, and I'm anxious to see what will happen to the allegations," Klaus Moeller, a resident of Augsburg, told AP Television News.

Adding to Mixa's troubles, a special investigator has found financial irregularities at a children's home under his responsibility around the same time as the allegations of abuse.

Mixa said in his letter he would support efforts for a "thorough investigation" into all the allegations.

On Wednesday, the head of Germany's national bishops' conference, Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, urged Mixa to take leave until the allegations are cleared up. On Thursday, Zollitsch praised Mixa's decision and said the bishops' conference had accepted it.

Yet it remains to be seen whether the move will be enough to convince disillusioned Catholics that their church is trying to change. Church authorities in Augsburg say they have seen a 60 percent increase in people leaving the church since the allegations first surfaced in late March.

"It was already clear to me when he gave his first interview where he disputed he ever touched any children that things don't work this way," said Guenther Schatzelmeier, who has not left the Catholic church despite the scandals. "Somehow all these people have lost touch with reality."

I don't think they're allowed to resign without the Pope's approval. But if someone has more accurate info, let us know.

Catholic CHURCH IS IN A DISGRACEFUL STATE OF DISREPUTE!

The situation in Canada with Catholic residential schools for First Nation (Aboriginal) children was not as publicized as the Irish one, but the torture and abuse committed by priests & nuns would curl the hair of the most hardened person. It's known as The Canadian Holocaust. Check out this vid:

This is good news. Of course, he is still offering euphamisms and excuses instead of taking responsibility for what he did, but resignation is a good start. However, if all the bishops, priests & nuns who ever hit children were to resign, *poof* goes the catholic hierarchy. Child abuse and control has been a cornerstone of catholicism. Is there one child who went to catholic school who did not endure or witness violence against children? I think not. It reminds me of this joke:

Good news: The muslim suicide bombers end up in heaven.
Bad news: the 79 virgins were nuns with rulers to slap their hands.

Wow, that would really s*ck.

Women could bring the Cathollic church to its knees, if they put their minds to it. Sixty percent of Sunday massgoers are women, according to Newsweek's article: What Would Mary Do? How Women Can Save the Catholic Church From Its Sins (April 12 2010 issue, online). If they decided as a united force of women to put absolutely nothing in the collection plate until each and every pedophile priest was removed....they could financially cripple the Catholic Church. The power of the pocketbook works in every other venue, the church should not receive tithes and offerings while it yet continues to sin against children. AMEN (and let it be so). And, they could do the same, until the church allowed female priests too!

The church doesn't care about mass goers. What they care about is $$$. That's where the situation in Germany gets complicated. The IRS there AUTOMATICALLY deducts money from everybody's paycheck (unless you prove to them you are not a christian and fill out paper work) and forwards it to the church. That;s where their biggest wealth comes from, and that's why German bishops are so influential, because Germany is the money-machine of the Vatican. They need to change THAT, and the Vatican will listen.

Part 2:

St. Peter: Let's just leave it that the priest was just more confused at the time, but rest assured that when his time comes, it will be taken care of, however, that doesn't allow us to just overlook the fact you haven't had true absolution of your sins at the time you passed. Rules are rules.

Recently Departed: What can I do? I feel I've sanctified throughout my life.

St. Peter: No, not my job. Also, you surely can't have a do-over. Just a little heaven humor there. Nope, about the only thing you can do is go to Purgatory, and I can't tell you for how long, regardless.

Recently Departed: Isn't there anything else I can do? What about reincarnation?

St. Peter: I'm always asked that, but nope, that just doesn't happen. Once, it's over, it's over.

Recently Departed: Well, ok. Tell me, St. Pete, what's Purgatory like? I mean, give me the real lowdown.

St. Peter: I'd have to know a little more about you. What were your interests while alive?

Recently Departed: I really enjoyed puppy dogs, sunny days, my favorite beer and oh, yes, politics! Reading about it, studying it, etc.

St. Peter: Hmmm....politics, eh? That wasn't listed here as one of your sins, but nonetheless, okay, here is an example of what Purgatory will be like, picture this: The voice in your head would sound just like Sarah Palin's and it never shuts up.

Recently Departed: (Dragged away kicking and screaming)

Part 1:

The question was posed recently here as to whether a persons last rites by a priest who has committed sexual abuse with children could give legitimate absolution, especially if he hasn't confessed his own sins in that regard, much less continuing to abuse children at the time of his priestly obligations. I offer the following scenario at the Pearly Gates.

St. Peter: Welcome. I see you've arrived as scheduled.

Recently Departed: I guess so, but I'm still surprised to be here.

St. Peter: Aren't they all. Well, let's get on with it. Looking over the list of sins, it seems you've followed the Ten Commandments faithfully, but....Oops.

Recently Departed: Oops? What Oops? Something wrong?

St. Peter: Ah...nothing that you did directly, it's just that...

Recently Departed: What, St. Peter, please tell me. I've tried to live a just life and help my fellow man/woman and follow the word of the Lord.

St. Peter: Yes, you have, and I see you've even given regularly to your church too, however, there was a glitch with receiving your last rites.

Recently Departed: How so? If I recall it was the priest from the parish that I attended most of my life. And, what he said at the time sounded good to me.

St. Peter: Well, that's not the problem. That priest sort of "dabbled" in areas that he just seemed to forget to repent for too. It happens.

Recently Departed: What do you mean by "dabble"??

"Church authorities in Augsburg say they have seen a 60 percent increase in people leaving the church since the allegations first surfaced in late March."

These 60% should be praised for using the hearts and minds their God gave them, rather than blindly following authority.

Jesus would be proud.

Once/if the Catholic Church comes clean and releases its files, they can always return to the Catholic Church knowing that they did the right thing by helping push their church to clean itself up.

Sex abuse and covering up sex abuse is something some Catholics do and that the Catholic Church has/had documents directing be done -- but it is not part of the Catholic religion.

Attacking the continuing sheltering of paedophile priests and ex-priest is attacking some Catholics. It is not attacking the Catholic religion.

To apologize for a sin you are still committing is twisting the knife while it is still inside your victim.

You cannot repent a sin while still committing the sin.

Those members of the Catholic hierarchy and Catholic laity who support and lobby for the cover up must cease their obstruction of justice and pride sin before an apology over facilitating abuse can mean anything more than in insult.

(1) Turn over files on paedophile priests world-wide to police.
(2) Release abused children world-wide from their oaths of silence.
(3) Institute a world-wide policy of reporting accusations of paedophilia to police, regardless of whether required by local laws.
(4) Send paedophile priests world-wide back to face criminal charges where appropriate, and pay court ordered restitution for past negligence.

Again, these bishops need to do more than just resign. They need to turn over the Catholic Church's files on alleged paedophile priests and ex-priests from the past 3 decades.

Until they do that they are still sinning, they are still obstructing justice.

These alleged paedophile priests and ex-priests need to be investigated and if appropriate added to sex offender registries. Until that is done they can get jobs in the secular world (and with other religions) giving them unsupervised direct contact with children.

yes, some of them became episcopal priests and one became a Lutheran pastor of all things! Do Lutherans want to expose their children to one of these perverts?
