'Orange Is The New Black' Author On Life In The Big House

When I was sent to federal prison in February, 2004, for a ten-year-old drug offense, I thought my life was over. It wasn't, but the way I looked at the world -- and my place in it -- was never quite the same. As a prisoner you are classed as an undesirable, compelled against your will into containment and forced into scarcity. You confront surprising truths about yourself, and about others, because they are unavoidable -- life lived cheek to jowl is pretty revealing.
