Ukraine Parliament Brawl (VIDEO, PHOTOS): Massive Fight Erupts Over Naval Base

First Posted: 06/27/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:15 PM ET

Ukraine's parliament collapsed into chaos during a debate about extending the Russian navy's lease on a base.

Parliamentary speaker Vlodymyr Lytvyn was forced to dodge eggs and was later shielded by two aids with black umbrellas.

Opposition MPs set off smoke bombs and the debate had to be held over the whining of alarms.

Politicians were forced to cover their mouths with to protect from the smoke, while several fist fights broke out on the floor of the parliament.

Despite the chaos, the motion was passed with 236 out of 450 votes.

Lovely... Try decaf, fellas... And cut down on vodka martinis.

They didn't like an idea of Russian Navy in Sevastopol past 2017... Do they like an idea of their fellow compatriots being without heat during harsh winters? Or an idea of Ukraine being a Third World country and lacking simple basics of decent life? Or their citizens, who elected those Royal Rumble-style politicians, living below poverty?

Having Russian Navy in Sevastopol is not such a bad thing for Ukraine afterall. If they only could leave their historic dislike of Russians behind (Ukraine have always been one of the most nationalistic republics of former Soviet Union, especially it's Western part) and read an "Idiot's Guide to Diplomacy", they, in fact, could improve country's economy, image and life of their people, who so desperately need some positive changes.

The umbrellas are awesome!

I dunno, maybe a little fisticuffs would be preferable over what we have now?

This could be the start of a new reality show 'xtreme politics'

Our Congress engaged in such behavior just before our Civil War; this isn't a good sign for a stable Ukraine. Somehow, for some reason, I suspect Vladimir Putin.

I'd like to see this happen in the US involving mitch mcconnell and joe Liberman... to start.
12:05 AM on 04/28/2010
This is how things should be. I'd like to see Mitch Mc Connel, Joe Liberman first in line to get punched in the face. I get that on PPV.

^2 on your comments... and when will the rest of the world catch on, especially the USA, and behold the power of eggs as free speech? From d/bag politicans, to d/rtball corp*rate execs, eggs are a large part of the answer. Just ask Arnold Schwarzenegger...

Wow, our parliament looks the height of civility compared to this! What I want to know is, how did the speaker know to have an umbrella handy?? heh

A full scale brawl in Congress would be so funny. All those clowns going at it.

It's good to see politicians fighting for what they believe in (and actually believing in something!).

Not like the mealy-mouthed bunch here in DC, who sell themselves to the highest bidder.

It would be great to see some of our pompous Senators go at it.
we need some new blood.
