Cory Gardner Slams Michael Steele, Says Party Chair Is On His Way Out (AUDIO)

An attendee at a "9-12" conference in Fort Collins last week let congressional candidate Cory Gardner know she was no fan of embattled Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele. Surprisingly, Gardner agreed wholeheartedly.

Asked by a conference-goer, "How can we get rid of Michael Steele?," Gardner--rather than defending his party chair--replied: "You know, I think it's happening."

Pressed on the issue, Gardner stressed that Colorado's GOP committeemen were not "to blame" for Steele's being in power, because they didn't vote for him.

Steele, who was elected party chair following the 2008 elections, has been criticized for his outspokenness and for his subordinates' misuse of party money to wine and dine donors at swanky sex clubs.

Gardner is trying to unseat rookie Democrat Betsy Markey in Colorado's 4th Congressional District, traditionally a conservative stronghold.
