The Time 100 In 2010

Time One Hundred

First Posted: 06/29/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:20 PM ET

It's Time 100 time again! Each year, Time magazine makes a huge list of all the people in the world that they have heard of, and then they winnow that list down to the one hundred people who are best equipped to sell an issue of Time magazine.

The full list is out, and actually, it's pretty okay! There's the usual range of obvious choices, like President Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, Bill Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi. And there's a few "so hot right now" picks that seem a little premature (Scott Brown? Hasn't be been at his job for just a handful of weeks?). But it's a pretty wide-ranging list, on balance fairly substantive and very global. And no one tried to cram someone like Bernie Madoff on the list under the heading "Builders and Titans," like they did last year.

Oprah Winfrey continues her dominance of this list, making her eighth appearance (she hasn't missed the cut since 2004, and was a "20th Century" honoree, as well). Other returning veterans include Obama, Bill Clinton, and Apple CEO Steve Jobs. I'm a little surprised that Hillary Clinton -- a five time honoree doing some of the most substantive work of her career -- didn't make the list. On the other hand, I'd bet that Pope Benedict XVI is pretty happy to have not made a fourth appearance. He's kind of having a down year!

Thirty-one women made the list this year, up from last year's twenty-nine.

It's often just as interesting to see who the honorees draw as the authors of their Time 100 write-ups. This year, filmmaker Michael Moore does the honors for Brazilian President/Paul Krugman lookalike Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Hillary Clinton talks about Nancy Pelosi and health care reform, saying "The passage of the historic health care reform bill is simply the latest example of her leadership, savvy and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of Americans everywhere." Ted Nugent says of Sarah Palin, "If [she] played a loud, grinding instrument, she would be in my band," marking the first time ever that Sarah Palin has been glancingly compared to Styx's Tommy Shaw.

General David Petraeus does the honors for General Stanley McChrystal, which -- let's face it -- is pretty much the best employee performance review you can receive. Sheila Bair pays tribute to Elizabeth Warren -- an occasion that makes me wish the two of them could be allowed to battle the Committee To Save The World to the death.

Palin returns the favor by saying, of Fox News's Glenn Beck, that he was "like the high school government teacher so many wish they'd had." You just let that sink in for a minute. Juuuust let that marinate.

At one point, she also uses the phrase: "kicking it old school." I know, I know. You're going to need another couple of minutes.

Time readers took to the polls to put Iranian dissident leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi (who made the editor's list as well, with a write-up from one of my personal favorite human beings, actress Shohreh Aghdashloo) atop their list of influential people. A substantive pick! Then, they turned around and put South Korean pop star in fourth place. Sorry, Stephen Colbert!

When Sarah Palin uses the phrase "kickin' it old school" I have to laugh. She shouldn't even try to be relevant to people my age, who use that phrase. She should just stick to articulating the bitterness of the generation before her generation, the uncool boomers who think Bill Ayers is worth obsessing over and who cheered because she, unlike anyone else beyond their circle, actually took that stuff  Read More...

The American experiment has hit a disaster point if its' citizens are following poorly educated, vapid, loud and wrong-headed folks like Palin and Beck. Both have re-invented themselves and gained prominence through hateful rhetoric.....similar to a certain Austrian of the past.

1. Palin: Failed to win Miss Alaska, took 7 years and 6 schools to earn a journalism degree, used her influence as Mayor of a small town to get certain tax benefits for herself on properties she owned, quit her job as Governor after it was learned that she was operating illegally.....

2. Beck: Fired numerous times from various job, long stint in rehab, never finished college, changed religion to help find himself........

These two are role models? The GOP should be ashamed.

I noticed that Sherri Shepherd made the list. But wasn't she meant to be in the "Thinkers" category?

well thanks for saving me the "time." time? get it? yuk yuk. seriously, the time 100 must be relevant to people who need others to show them the way, even if it is, uh, sort of bogus. like, sandra bullock is a great actress and palin's a mover, as in x-lax. thanks for an illuminating glance.

I would include this list of the Time Magazine's' "100 Most influential people in the world" in the "Top 10 Most asinine annual lists in the world". Top 5 even!

Ashton Kutcher routinely gives advice to Vladimir Putin, Angela Merkel and the Ghost of Ronald Reagan. He is VERY influential. Indeed, he is also rumored to having provided Michael Angelo with the original idea for the Sistine Chapel frescoes (because, if you didn't know, Ashton also invented a time machine soon after having drinks with Steven Hawking a few weeks ago).

That Ashton, he is just awesome. AND, he is married to Demi Moore (the least of his many accomplishments, for sure).

What nonsense . . . considering this list is 100 top in THE WORLD. I doubt Palin and Beck have much influence around THE WORLD let alone in the United States. Yeh they have followers here in the US but to put their name in the same list as Obama is an insult.

I am not buying TIME anymore . . . Newsweek here I come.

Oh and everything this vil3 creature said about that vil3 creature and another vil3 creature said about this vil3 creature is very delusion@l. They're the total opposites of patriots, truth tellers, history buffs, common sense, or good people

This list is such a joke. Palin and Beck under Leaders? Yeah, they're influential, but they're entertainers. Actually, they're like sc@m artists. Oh and Scott Brown? Are you serious? He's done nothing to be influential. NOTHING. He's not even going to have a long term career as a solidly conservative Republican from liberal Massachusetts. Oh and Obama was #4 and Palin was #9. Wow

This guy has a negative comment about Palin and Beck in every article, blog, letter, note, conversation he has. You could play a drinking game to it.

Unless I missed it, Bill O'Reilly is NOT on the list but Glenn Beck is. I love it. O'Reilly thinks he is the 'ne plus ultra' of all TV media. He will probably mock Beck on his Fudge Factor Show next week.

This list and the Person of the Year are merely a Time magazine's PR devices and should be teated as such, nothing more. Your own list of people you think influential is more relevant than Time's self-serving nonsense.

too bad Fox blows everyone else's ratings out of the water. ratings are nothing you say? guess Fox news ideology going through so many peoples heads doesn't matter either.

On a good night Fox gets less viewers then most Network sitcom reruns ..... All cable news channels combined often have less the 3 million viewers during prime time. Cable News is only relevant to news and politics junkies like us, the vast majority of the country doesn't care.
