Louisiana Oil Spill 2010 PHOTOS: Gulf Of Mexico Disaster Unfolds

First Posted: 06/01/10 02:24 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:20 PM ET

On April 20, BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and commencing months of oil leaking unrestrained into the ocean. Efforts to manage the spill with controlled burning, dispersants and plugging the leak were unsuccessful until BP capped the well in mid-July, temporarily halting the flow of oil into the Gulf. The well was then successfully plugged and declared "effectively dead" on September 19.

This oil spill has obtained the dubious distinction of being the worst oil spill in US history, surpassing the damage done by the Exxon Valdez tanker that spilled 11 million gallons of oil into the ecologically sensitive Prince William Sound in 1989. It is estimated that over 205 million gallons of oil were released into the Gulf.

Here are updated photos of oil hitting coastlines and the damage throughout the ocean, which poses a serious threat to fishermen's livelihoods, marine habitats, beaches, wildlife and human health.

Exposed marsh grass roots are seen in an oil-impacted area of marshland in Bay Jimmy near the Louisiana coast Friday, Oct. 29, 2010. There is no comprehensive calculation for how much marshland was oiled by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, but estimates range from less than a square mile to a handful of square miles. Regardless, Louisiana loses roughly 25 square miles of marsh each year due to a host of environmental and manmade causes. The state is the site of one of the most ferocious rates of land loss in the world. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)

Why is there so little coverage of the Gulf oil gusher on this HP website?
HP , along with other major media, along with our governmental agencies--are in tacitly bed with BP. They are not reporting many many major issues. People are being arrested with cameras filming the oil on the Gulf. BP is not actually facilitating clean-up...only putting-on 'pony and balloon' shows, i.e., calling-in clean-up works to areas where officials visit...and then releasing them afterward. Chemicals, in addition to the oil and natural gas, have escaped the gusher and out of the ocean into the atmosphere...this is causing respiratory sicknesses for citizens and hospitalizations for some responders. BP is concerned with cost-cutting...much more ocean life has died than has been reported. Ask yourself: where is FEMA? what, actually, has Admiral Thad Allen done? why does Barack Obama have nothing to say except what BP says...translated into Americanese...Check the internet, keyword: oil media blackout...Kindra Arnesen: Gulf Emergency Summit

Wow...thanks for the link to Pensacola beach...of course, sand drifts--it's covering a blanket of oil underneath; how could that ever be cleaned? it seems impossible, the beach is doomed to forever have an oily foundation...my God, really it just makes me want to cry.

This GULF DISASTER NEWS should be displayed first and foremost on every page of your website – it is not going away, even though you are trying to make it so…

Why has HP along with most other media, buried the GULF DISASTER (NOT ‘Oil Spill”) down in the depths of the news columns?

Why is the Gulf Disaster not ALWAYS the first story in the ‘Big News’ section?

What could POSSIBLY be more important in this country right now than the biggest environmental disaster ever…?

Asking the questions - but not liking the answers that are expected...
01:56 AM on 06/29/2010
Absolutely agree!

I hate to be right on this one, but I predicted as much, and it was to be expected. Now, one has to hunt for updates on this catastrophy, while the antics of Sarah Palin and other starlets are above center fold, even on this web site.

One has to wonder if the public is really that shallow, and demands fresh and tantalizing "news" ever so often, because the tough stuff gets stale and boring...... Attention spans truly seem to be ever more deteriorating, along with the state of nature OUR HABITAT, and the world around us.

We thrive on bickering about relatively inconsequential stuff such as the height of Palin's fence, Glenn Beck's crocodile tears, which celebrities get divorced or overdose on drugs, the number of Obama's golf outings as compared to his predecessor's, yet miss what's really important. They make their living off our eyes being glued on their every move, while we lose ours looking for fluff.

Totally agree with you on everything you're saying and I'll add that whenever I talk to anyone about it all they can say is "it's so sad" and they think this will just go away at some point and we'll be able to continue on the earth's death march. I think Americans are that shallow, callous and ignorant. Well, MOST. I've been crying a lot this morning. I'm not a wimpy guy. I consider myself strong willed and there isn't much that "gets me". This GETS me. This makes 9-11 look like one of the happiest days of my life. Never in a million years did I think anything could top 9-11 as one of the most emotionally disturbing days in my life. This thing is over 2 months old.....every day it creeps in at some point and hits me in the face. The animals is what really hits me hard. The dolphins. OMFG here I go again.....

Totally agree with you...this is not going away and should be front and center...nothing else really matters to me right now.
Although I will say it sure was good news that Congress didn't give up the 3 billion for Afghanistan,
but that's about it.....
Keep asking those questions,,,,even though we won't like the answers, I prefer the truth so I know what I'm dealin' with!!

When an oil tanker (The Sea Empress) ran onto a reef on my local shoreline I wrote down my thoughts. Hope you recover from this catastrophy caused by meddling maniacs.

At six foot from the ground a pair of eyes did fill,
Under a brain that witnessed the cruel outcome of the spill.
Upon a mass of sixteen stones a wrenching throat was thick,
As the brains above the running eyes registered the slick.

Plastic bags were aptly black sad people wrongly tarred and feathered,
More who walked with boxes of hope half smiled windswept and weathered.
Pilots, Politicians, Salvagemen equally shunt the blame,
Time nor tide will wait for man and so the oil it came.
For whilst the orators shuffled for the advantage of there words,
It was action from ordinary people that came to the calling birds.

And so I looked across the bay at an army of volunteers,
Who chose to help and not to wait for the outcome of their peers.
Whom hogged the cameras and chaired the tables in mock dismayed dispute,
In Wok-up galore stormy weather the arrival of King Canute.

On a mouth between the tears was an upward curve of pride,
As these charitable organisations in search worked side by side.
And so the head that gathered all this choked and turned away,
And those charitable organisations will get my pay today.

This is horrible, and humans are just making it worse. They still want to drill when so many animals are dying. They don't even want to consider other possibilities. It's too hard, too much money, too costly. Heaven forbid you have to pay $2.00 more a gallon for gas. Let's protect our beaches but screw the animals.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxDf-KkMCKQ

At 7:49 in this video you see the new barrier islands that are supposed to weather a storm and protect the wildlife. Instead it's just in the way of their escape, and look at it. Do you think that can weather even one hurricane? Obama was stupid to say Offshore drilling was safe. Stupid to approve these barrier islands, and I'm sure he will make other stupid mistakes, like dispersants, because he wants to help. He may not scream, but he wants to help. But he was right the first time when he was against drilling, when he said no to the barrier islands. Because of us, because of humanities greed, because of the republicans partisan bickering in congress, because of oil money lobbying he second guessed himself, second guessed science. He was also right when he placed the moratorium, and that judge, the gulf states that still support drilling, and people that live in them, don't deserve the land they live on. And the people elsewhere who can't see this for what it is, a warning, are stupid.
