VENICE, La. — President Barack Obama is commending law enforcement for responding quickly to a car bomb in Times Square and says the U.S. will do what it takes "at home and abroad" to protect the American people.

Speaking on a trip to Louisiana on Sunday afternoon, Obama says the New York police and fire departments and FBI responded quickly to a dangerous situation Saturday night in Times Square.

Obama says he will monitor the situation closely. He spoke earlier in the day to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Authorities in New York say there's no evidence lining the explosives-laden SUV to the Taliban in spite of claims of responsibility on websites.

On April 30th, the day before this attack, NYC's St. Vincent's Hospital, was closed. SVH was the first responder during 9/11. It is--rather, was--the only Level 1 Trauma Center on the westside of Manhattan south of 59th St. Over the past month--amid protests from staff and community members--the hospital was summarily closed. 3000 + people lost their jobs, yet Mayor Bloomberg was almost completely silent on this issue. Meanwhile, many were pointing to the troubling security risks that the closure would pose.

If this recent terrorist attack had hurt anyone, SVH--were its emergency & trauma centers still active--would have been a go-to destination. That's no longer the case. Our elected officials have one main job--and that's to keep the public's trust that they will make our collective safety a priority. That's not happening in NYC--and the buck stops w/ Bloomberg. This story's important and is being kept alive by local activists and attorneys who have vowed not to let political negligence lead New York City headlong towards another tragic event.

I think it's "linking" explosives not "lining" explosives.

Suspect is a white male in his 40's.

NYPD already has video of the guy acting suspiciously around the car and then running into an alley and switching his shirts.
