MoveOn Ad Urges Obama To Stop Future Offshore Drilling (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/03/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:20 PM ET

Activists opposed to new offshore drilling projects are seeing the Gulf coast oil spill as a call to action, using the crisis to urge President Obama toward a clean energy future. MoveOn.org added its voice with an ad released today titled "The Ban."

The ad features a plea for clean energy with images of the devastation caused by the oil spill and calls on Obama to reinstate the ban on new offshore drilling.

While Obama has put new offshore drilling plans on hold until the cause of the disaster is discovered, he has given no indication that future offshore drilling plans are off the table.

It is Time for Our Elected Leaders to Take the Lead in the Gulf!

BP has been irresponsible long before the Gulf of Mexico explosion happened. BP ignored safety issues, taking risks they knew had the potential to cause mass destruction in the Gulf of Mexico. They have kept vital spill information from our elected government, stopped media from covering the disaster under threat of arrest, and tried to force fisherman to sign a waver limiting their legal rights before allowing them to help clean up the mess BP made.
It's time to ask President Obama to take a stronger lead in response to the gulf oil spill.

These ads have been running in PA continuiously with a positive response from the public who says the media is lying about polls saying the majority of americans want drilling to continue based on a WJ poll of a few hundred corporate participants. The public is not stupid and we demand solar and wind energy today not next year or the next 50 years!

I congratulate MoveOn for its good political instincts and judgment in the ads about offshore drilling.

Solar and wave power are the closest things on earth to a free lunch. Let's do it.

Good job MoveOn. President Obama, this is your moment. Make the right choice. History will remember this as a turning point, or a wasted opportunity.

Obama has had his moment for over a year, and has done nothing with it.

If we technologically can't even handle a huge oil flow, even though we've been given assurances for years that this was all safe, then how can we still be gullible enought to believe nuclear power is safe. You have no recovery for a major nuclear plant disaster, no way to clean it up. And remember in 40 years the industry and government haven't even come up with a safe way to long term store the nuclear waste!!! Let this oil spew be a warning for our plans to start building nuclear power plants again! It's time to embrace natural gas in a big way, NOW.

For once in my life I agree with MoveOut .......let's start building 10 - 12 nuclear plants immediately.

Nuclear has its own drawbacks, not the least of which is what to do with the waste.

Good post. I wonder when MSNBC is going to report that Obama took $400,000 from BP in contributions, and asked them for more money after his announcement of drilling off VA shore?
