Rick Perry: Oil Spill May Be An 'Act Of God,' Texas Governor Claims

Rick Perry

Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) claimed on Monday that the oil rig explosion that caused a massive -- and still-expanding spill -- may have been "just an act of God" that could not have been prevented.

Speaking at a conference sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Perry offered his theory to a reporter who asked if events such as the recent West Virginia mine disaster, the financial meltdown or the BP oil spill may have been encouraged by too much emphasis on free enterprise and lax regulations.

Perry disagreed wholeheartedly:

"We don't know what the event that has allowed for this massive oil to be released," Perry said. "And until we know that, I hope we don't see a knee-jerk reaction across this country that says we're going to shut down drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, because the cost to this country will be staggering."

As many have pointed out, however, BP has adamantly opposed expansion of industry oversight, and, perhaps most notoriously failed to install a shut-off switch that might have helped mitigate the crisis.

Gov. Perry's staff later attempted to walk back his earlier comments. The Dallas Morning News reports:

The governor's staff says Perry was not insisting that an "act of God" caused the spill. (He later said that he suspects a "mechanical failure" is the cause.) Perry aides say that he was simply making the point that it is too early to blame BP PLC, which leased the rig that was drilling the well.

The whole 'act of god' phrase is used to obfuscate fiscal responsibility and nothing more.

I wish companies would have to prove the existence of god and that god actually caused the problem before they were allowed to run away from their responsibilities.

If the BP oil spill is an Act of God, then would not attempting to mitigate the damages from it constitute blasphemy

Just keep voting these idiots in! When are the American people going to wake up? The (R) preceding the name does mean something you know! And it doesn't mean re-elect.

Isn't it amazing, America is one of the most religious nations on the planet, yet every time there is a disaster people are rushing around blaming God.

When the terrorists flew the planes into the twin towers, American church leaders and fundamentalists said the whole thing was the fault of the American people. This was, apparently, because God was outraged by any tolerance shown towards Gays.

If the old boy could have unleashed this assault I dare say he could have caused the planes to malfunction before they left the ground.

Now this hideous oil calamity is being cited as an act of God-I realise this is an insurance term. Doesn't anyone who made an error, sought to save money by constructing a shoddy edifice, thrown a monkey-wrench into a a vital place, fail to have enough oil-sludge mopping up machines, and the hundred thousand other possibilities have had a part it it?

Then there is Haliburton, not the squeakiest clean reputation in the oil business is it?

Couldn't it be that the more often people say that God did it, the more unlikely the guilty parties are to be indicted?

Well Lord.. we took this long tool and stuck it into Mother Earth in order to be fabulously wealthy and orgasmically happy, but we didn't take precautions and we f'***ed ourselves right off the earth.
We were kinda hoping it would be a comet so we could blame You

Reply to ChrisVan8:
Since you've opened trump, by quoting the Bible (not a bad thing), I'd like to comment.
Two views of "truth" from the same book:
"What is truth? Pilate asked. (Jn. 18:38)
And Jesus speaking to the disciples, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (Jn. 8:32)
Remember, and staying in context, Adam & Eve ate and we all have been cursed with the knowledge of good and evil.
Jesus did not answer Pilate - the truth has always been the truth, what is good not evil. And Jesus, being the good philosopher that he was (see GWB) knew this to be true when in John 14:15-19 he promises to have sent (Vs 17) "the Spirit of truth" ("to be with you forever" Vs16)
from His father.
My point is this - Perry is doing the Pilate thing. In per-verse.
Pilitites believe if you know God - you know the truth.
I think if you know the truth - well you know.
From the Desiderata(?) "your God, whatever you perceive Him to be." Perceive - good choice of words for God.
Mr Perry should seek truth and perceive God

Maybe this was already posted, but doesn't having Rick Perry as Governor of Texas also qualify as an 'Act of God' ???... what a disaster!
