BP Oil Spill: 7 Secrets BP Doesn't Want You To Know (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 07/05/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:20 PM ET

BP made its name synonymous with "Beyond Petroleum" in 2000, rebranding itself as a company that sees a future past dependence on fossil fuels. But ten years later, the oil company is as committed to furthering their oil expansion as ever. And as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill emphasizes only too well, there are serious environmental and human concerns when it comes to drilling for oil. The Gulf spill, which left 11 workers dead and 17 injured, is about the size of Rhode Island, running across the northern Gulf of Mexico between the mouth of the Mississippi River and Florida. It runs wide, threatening the coastlines, and deep, traveling beneath about 5,000 feet of water and 13,000 feet under the seabed. The Deepwater Horizon well is leaking 5,000 barrels per day, shutting down fishing across the affected areas, damaging fragile habitats and putting animals in peril.

This may be BP's largest disaster, with many claiming it will be larger than Exxon Valdez's spill, but it is certainly not the first. We're taking a look at BP's most questionable actions both past and present-- which do you think is most inexcusable?

Looking Out For #1

BP's announcement that they're taking responsibility for the response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, not for the accident, sounds more like they're patting themselves on the back. BP CEO Tony Hayward said Monday they are dealing with the cleanup and compensation to those affected, and while they have been dealing with it, their initial efforts also highlight that they're ultimately looking out for themselves. The company offered settlements to coastal residents of no more than $5,000 if they give up their right to sue. This extends to out-of-work fisherman they've hired to help with the clean up. BP has since removed the language from the contract, once they were criticized for the move. They also initially attempted to downplay the seriousness of the the spill, saying the rig was leaking 1,000 barrels a day when in fact it was leaking five times as much.

The Wall Street Journal is correct, up to a point. The remote switch referred to as voluntary in the U.S. and used by two other oil producing nations (Norway being one), was mandatory by MMS standards until 2001! In 2001 an oil commision, headed by Dick Cheney, petitioned MMS to remove the regulation for a remote switch, and they complied. The gifts, money and perks given to MMS, and Secretary Dirk Kempthorne had to be significant, for this 180 degree turn on safety. Linda Comstock

speaking of pictures they dont want you to see, where are all the pictures of the sunken drilling rig? Is there something about the rig that would cause us to believe that something else caused the explosion? There are over a dozen remote subs making pictures of oil coming out of the pipe, but nothing has ever been shown of the rig itself.

BP needs to step up to the plate and clean up the mess they created. They also first and foremost need to take care of the people who are paying the price for the mess that they have created. Money is not the most important thing in Life!!! People are!!!! Quit being so damn greedy with your precios money and pay up!!! Tony Hayward- You are a selfish SOB. You want your life back! What about the people who are suffering simply because BP chose to cut corners in order to save money and time!! How selfish can you be!!!

BP is the one in charge not Obama cause BP is part of Global Shadow govern who owns the American-Euro Governs and oil is used to control the world even though there is lots of oil being withheld. If they really want to stop the Gulf leak-BP Executives should OFF Themselves and have their bodies blown into the leaking riser-This is called KARMA KILLING the Leak. I like how the arrogant Brits are mad at Americans cause they destroyed our Gulf coasts for 20 years.

The only "real" way to hurt the oil companies is to stop buying oil. We the people are the end users. This also applies to coal, and the new style of mining where they simply remove mountaintops in Appalachia and destroy whole environments in the process. If you want to see how it should be done, look at the Danish, who are negative energy users.

If BP would just give up on retrieving the oil and let any of our armed forces underwater demolition crews crush the blowout preventer into the ocean floor, the leak would stop and we could concentrate on clean up.

they could have been making a tube of some sort to connect down there and pump that oil to a tanker ship instead of letting it spew..Masterminds have created many things, why not something like this?

Lets shove some BP executives in the pipe to stop the leak!!!!

To the recent posters. Some of it may have been a little unclear to me, but just remember we grieve with you. We grieve together on this one. No real choice.

BP PLC Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said Saturday. "Many of the things we're trying have been done on the surface before, but have never been tried at 5,000 feet."

But that is where you were drilling.
