Brazilian Archbishop Says Kids Are 'Spontaneously Homosexual,' According To Report

Dadeus Grings

BRADLEY BROOKS   05/ 5/10 08:33 PM ET   AP

RIO DE JANEIRO — A Brazilian archbishop said adolescents are "spontaneously homosexual" and in need of guidance, while society at large is pedophile, according to a Wednesday report.

Archbishop Dadeus Grings – a conservative priest who has made controversial statements in the past – told the O Globo newspaper at a Brazilian bishops conference that society's woes are being reflected in the sex abuse scandal enveloping the Roman Catholic Church.

"Society today is pedophile, that is the problem. So, people easily fall into it. And the fact it is denounced is a good sign," Grings told O Globo.

The comments come as the church is under fire for a sex abuse scandal touching all corners of the globe – and three weeks after Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the No. 2 official at the Vatican, said at a news conference in Chile that the sex scandals were linked to homosexuality and not celibacy among priests.

There have been several cases of priests allegedly abusing children that have surfaced in Brazil in recent months.

Father Geraldo Martins, a spokesman for the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops, said Grings would not be made available to elaborate on his comments made Tuesday to O Globo.

Martins said he could not confirm the accuracy of the newspaper report, because he said Grings did not make the comments during a press conference, but on the sidelines of the gathering.

Grings is the archbishop of the Porto Alegre diocese, one of the largest in Brazil, which has more Catholics than any other nation. He also serves as the chancellor of the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul.

Grings denounced the abuse within the church, but he said internal punishment of priests guilty of abuse was sufficient and that police should not be involved.

"For the church to go and accuse its own sons would be a little strange," he said.

The archbishop also said it was important to help children avoid homosexuality.

"We know that the adolescent is spontaneously homosexual. Boys play with boys, girls play with girls," he said. "If there is no proper guidance, this sticks. The question is – how are we going to educate our children to use a sexuality that is human and suitable?"

Grings also said the acceptance of homosexuality in society could pave the way for the acceptance of pedophilia.

"When sexuality is trivialized, it's clear that this is going to affect all cases. Homosexuality is such a case. Before, the homosexual wasn't spoken of. He was discriminated against.

"When we begin to say they have rights, rights to demonstrate publicly, pretty soon, we'll find the rights of pedophiles," he said.

The archbishop has made controversial comments in the past.

In 2003, he argued that only 1 million Jews died in the Holocaust, though a few years later he recanted. Experts say 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust.

Last year, he outraged Jewish groups in Brazil by telling a magazine that "more Catholics than Jews died in the Holocaust, but this isn't known because the Jews control the world's media."

Grings told The Associated Press at that time he was trying to advocate for the millions of non-Jewish victims of the Nazis.

At first glance this priest seems more cutting edge than many, if we disregard the fact that the story was published and produced by Globo News - the Brazilian equivalent of Fox News, so I wouldn't call this "such a breaking news" 'quotable', or reliable.

To say many kids/ teenagers have same sex inclinations, is pretty edgy for a 73 years old - early 20th century priest. To admit kids play with their sexuality until they find or are guided to choose 'one sexual inclination or another', shows awareness. Maybe not as politically correct and complete" as people that consider themselves homosexuals could describe, probably because he doesn't have that type of deep personal experience or prefer to do not admit it.

To say that 'church reflects the society' is also deep theological meaning...
In any case - his remarks on how our society tend to glorify and market youngsters sexually, might have been interpreted by Globo - the fox, as 'pedophilia' - a more news wrecking word, to attract attention of it's most wanted American gossip market hunger to crucify the next priest !

The only problem is that, reality is in 3D for "homosexuality Templars" as it is for the Demonized priests, that in the same conference calls the church to recognize the 'pedophilia as crimes' although difficult step. If we are really trying to help victims and avoid future ones - we will need to highlight what we agree the most - and "give to Cesars what

In the XXI Century it is amazing that these kinds of stories come up almost on a weekly basis from some corner of the world. It is all of our collective fault that we allow this core religious organization to continue as it does. One the one hand we see as outdated these kinds of statements, or when Saints are created or people crawl on their knees to the point of being bloodied to some alter... and on the other we all walk on by their luxurious churches and accept as "cute" the group still symbolically eating the body of Christ, etc. A separation of Church and State can still be the status quo while requiring them to present fully audited statements and the requirement to pay a realistic tax. If they can afford to have the beautiful guilded church in town, they certainly can kick in to help pay for the public road leading up to it. We all enjoy Disneyland and its characters of make believe but I believe that the Disney Corporation at least pays taxes, don't they?

Geeez...he just explained everything so clearly. The Catholics in Brazil are getting royally corkscrewed. This Archbishop needs to retire.

Wow, someone in the church is actually implying that the kids are at fault because they can't control their homosexual urges, but the priests are only acting according to their pedophile nature? This is the most revolting thing I have ever heard. Is this true? Do people who believe in the church finally understand how low these people can be? RUN and don't look back people.

Folks, this is the same country where a 9 year old girl, pregnant with twins as a result of rape from her stepfather, was attacked for terminating the pregnancies despite the doctors' firm opinion that she couldn't carry the babies to term and survive. The Church said she should have tried.

The Church later excommunicated the girl, her mother and the doctors who did the procedure.

The stepfather was not excommunicated at all. He was caught after trying to evade police and leave the country, and is being held for trial.

Floodberg, you aren't hurting for fans, but for this and for your other comments on this thread, I just have to fan you! I remember the story you refer to here, and it's one of the most outrageous things the "Church" has ever one, IMHO.

This just goes to show what is wrong with the Catholic Church when they let a person like this preside over the largest congregation in Brazil with no safeguards in place to protect its worshipers if something does happen.

It's obvious his belief is to alert the church and not the police which has always been the problem with the Catholic church. So he believes that it's the childs fault and not the priests for being abused because they are predisposed to being gay from birth. So what happens under his watch to protect people....nothing as usual.

Hey, it's the party line. I'm just amazed that someone can deliver this message to the faithful with a straight face.

The problem is that the Catholic Church thinks they ARE the police. They always have believed they are ordained to rule, and they always will believe that.

As for this fellow... just another Catholic clergyman trying to dodge responsibility. This so-called "archbishop" knows very well that if he doesn't lie like this, he will be held responsible for the abusive priests within his diocese. Not satisfied to sweep the victims of the Church under the rug, now he wants to take the same tack that other rapists take: "Yeah. Women want it rough. They want a REAL man to take them." Substitute "boys" for "women", and "holy" for "real", and you have the official position of the Catholic church in Brazil. (If the archbishop says it, it's official, by definition. See previous reference to authoritarianism and the church's "proper" place in society.)

I guess we know where the so-called "priestly commitment to truth" is, don't we?

I just realized that you're right, I haven't seen a defender of the Faith in a while. Maybe they're afraid we'll become spontaneous homosexuals.

A brilliant example of the "man of the cloth" spouts his knowledge. I'm amazed that anyone would want to be associated with his "religion" at all. Amazing stupidity, he needs to go away...far away...like drop him in the middle of the ocean far away.

I suppose what the priest meant is that he became Spontaneously pedophilia disposed.
Question, Did he fight those urges or is his sexuality so messed up that it is criminal?
