Lincoln Mailer Uses India Imagery Similar To Controversial Ad

Lincoln Attack Ad Bill Halter

This past week, Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) condemned an outside group for running racially-tinged attack ads against her primary opponent, Lt. Gov. Bill Halter, slamming him for outsourcing jobs while serving on the board of a tech company. On the ground in Arkansas, however, her campaign has been distributing mailers that make the same charge using similar imagery.

The Huffington Post was passed along a four-page mailer paid for by "Friends of Blanche Lincoln" that charges "Dollar Bill Halter" with profiting from a company that sent American jobs to India. The mailer includes pictures of the Taj Mahal on three of the four pages, as well as outlines of a presumably Indian skyline.

"When Bill Halter was getting rich on corporate boards, outsourcing just meant more profits," the mailer reads. "But now that Halter's running for office, he's suddenly upset that 'our jobs are being shipped overseas.' Can we really trust Bill Halter to stop outsourcing - after his company sent American jobs to India?"

The veracity of the charge is debated. Halter served on the board of WebMethods, a tech company that, as a way of trimming costs, opened up new offices in Bangalore, India in 2004 as opposed to within the United States. But what struck Lincoln critics is how similar the messaging and imagery is to an ad being run on Arkansas television by the group, Americans for Jobs and Security. This past week, the business-backed organization (normally a proponent of open markets) put nearly a million dollars behind a television campaign that featured images of India, Indian music, and Indians themselves thanking Halter for sending them their jobs.

Lincoln officially condemned the ad saying it was "offensive and doesn't belong in Arkansas." In addition, she expressed her regret over AJS's "participation in the campaign." Her campaign told the Huffington Post that she has had "no contact" with the group.

Her mailer, however, has allowed critics to charge that she's comfortable with AJS's message even as she distances herself from the group's taint.

"The mailer isn't just racist and disgusting it's a lie," said Eddie Vale, a spokesman for the union conglomerate, AFL-CIO, which is backing Halter. "Halter's company never moved a single job overseas. It does however show how desperate and worried DC insider Lincoln's business backers are getting about the race."

The Lincoln campaign, for its part, said the mailer is simply an effort to present information on Halter in a "straightforward manner with documentation" and doesn't cross the line.

"Sen. Lincoln believes Bill Halter should be held accountable for his record leading a company that outsourced jobs to India," said Charlie Gocio, a spokesman for Friends of Blanche Lincoln. Americans for Job Security, Gocio added, "chose to present that information using Indian actors in a way Sen. Lincoln believes is offensive."

I hope she spends lots and lots of money and loses. Send her back home so she can see what havoc she and her fellow Republicans (since that what she really is) have created and maintained.

If anyone has products in their household made in China, they don't have much to contribute to this debate.

We all do, including you, but that's because the Republicans destroyed the manufacturing sector of this country. (Actually, Clinton can take a bow for this too.) We need to change our trade policy and bring our jobs back home.

I am from Arkansas and feel certain that Mrs. Lincoln could care less about those who need help the most, the uninsured for example; Arkansas is full of people who a cannot afford necessary medical care, even with the insurance. I agree that her "distancing from this add" seems less than truthful. It reminds me of the T.V. laywer who throws out that prejudicial statement, fully aware that the objection of the other T.V. lawyer's sustainability. But, too late the image has been created. Gosh-Darn.

Halter has a great opportunity to play the whole "Outsourcing Report" meme to the max! Listing all the outsourcing work of his opponents and their pals, and sending out a list of their failings in the process...

Is India the main beneficiary of outsourcing?
Or are they just afraid to attack China on that?
Or would that mean they would have to attack other than tech companies, like manufacturing industry?
Since they can outsource anyplace, while tech often needs English speakers?

We all, as citizens, need to be wary of all the smear ads that are going to be in place during this election cycle. We need to do our own research.
I live in PA - and the smear ads have also started.....I don't trust any of them. I'll do my own research, thank you!

Off topic...well sort of...

for those that missed it, Whirlpool is senting 1100 jobs to Mexico...it was a plant that made, refrigerators, I think...

If the companies can do it...they will. Make it cost them BIG money for shipping jobs out of the country, maybe that will cause some second thoughts.

All overseas companies should lose their subsidies. Now. If any businesses should get subsidies or tax breaks, it should be the ones that stay in the U.S.

Lincoln voted for nafta, cafta, and a 'special' chinese deal, that all led to jobs going overseas...,

I'm voting for Halter. If Lincoln wins the primary, I'll vote 3rd party or leave it blank. Lincoln will not get my vote, ever, after what she did to HC reform.....,

This campaign is starting off right! Mr. Halter's campaign staff should send out a mailing (anonymously, of course) with Blanche in Bombshell McGee Nazi Dominatrix getup, whip and taser in hand, fitting a leather "halter" on Arkansas voters!

Read the article. It's saying that the charges of him outsourcing jobs is open for debate. The company didn't send current jobs over seas. They needed to open more offices and instead of doing that domestically they did it in Asia. I'm not defending him. I'm just not letting an accusation that's not quite accurate go without being disputed.

This kind of smear campaigning is gross, especially within a party, but if Halter did in fact sit on a board that decided to outsource jobs overseas then he should have to publicly answer the question of how they justified doing it and how he feels about it now.

If he can't do that then he is no better for the country than the union busting conservadem Blanche Lincoln.

"as a way of trimming costs, opened up new offices in Bangalore, India in 2004 as opposed to within the United States."

A charge has been made, accurate or not, and since he's running for office he should answer it. Notice I said "if Halter did" since I don't know any more or less than you do about it. Don't assume I didn't read it......

The real problem with politicians is that they are human beings with human frailties. It is our job to figure out the ones with the fewest frailties.

I wonder how do Indian Americans feel about this. It's time for Asian Americans to get into racial politics more like the other groups. American politicians from both the left and the right are not afraid at all to offend Asians for good reasons: they barely complain compared to other groups (including caucasians).

true. I am an Indian American and I hear this kind of stuff from my co-workers. When our company moved our company's call center from California to Utah, my co-workers were thankful that it didn't move to India. They weren't upset that the jobs got outsourced from local place to another place. I found the ads to be offensive because it showed them caricatured and subliminaly to be human leeches. I think only thing missing was showing an indian praying to a cow - and they could have gotten the Hindus also. Glad, I live in California and not one of those Southern US states.

"Conservative" is not a political party, genius.
12:21 PM on 05/05/2010
Conservative ideology has done more to dropship jobs out of America than every other source combined.

Once again, conservatives create the problem, and blame others for the destruction caused by their fraud-based ideology.

Amen. Its about time republicans were called on their love of offshoring jobs. Don't tell me that I'm un-America, against freedom, and pro-job killing because I'm a democrat when republicans favor sending tech jobs to India.
