Women's Health: Men And Women Experience Stress Differently, Study Says (VIDEO)

In today's economic climate, we all know what it feels like to be stressed, overloaded and burnt out. However, a new study suggests that men and women may respond to everyday stress in radically different ways.

According to Marianne J. Legato, M.D., a professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University, men's and women's workplace behaviors are motivated by different goals, causing them to experience stress in different ways.

"We find that men are motivated by the amount of power that they acquire and the amount of money that they earn," Dr. Legato said. "In contrast, women are much more sensitive to the atmosphere of the workplace ... they enjoy being appreciated and thanked."

Additionally, women who work jobs where they are poorly rewarded or under-appreciated will experience higher levels of work-related stress, particularly if they have additional care-giving responsibilities at home.

According to Dr. Legato, women who are "raising children, keeping a social calender and maintaining the household ... are at the highest risk for coronary disease."
