CUNY Implements Waiting Lists For First Time

For the first time in its history, the City University of New York has created waiting lists to cope with an overabundance of applicants this year.

Any student who applies to the system's four-year or community colleges after Friday will be put on a waiting list and given priority for enrollment in January, officials said.

The change will have the biggest impact at the community colleges, where students have traditionally enrolled throughout the summer. The new deadline does not apply to transfer or graduate students.

According to the Associated Press, more than 69,000 people applied for freshman admission to CUNY this year and enrollment at senior colleges has increased 30 percent in 11 years.
