Tennessee Flood: Millions Pour In For Relief

First Posted: 05/10/10 03:15 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:25 PM ET

Amy Grant, Keith Urban, Alison Krauss and others appeared on a Nashville-based telethon to raise money for those who lost nearly everything in the Tennessee floods of last week.

From Country Weekly:

Proceeds from the telethon will go to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Thousands of Middle Tennessee families were left with no homes, food, or possessions after weekend flooding of historic proportions. Several Nashville landmarks, including the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the Opryland Hotel, the Wildhorse Saloon and the Opry Mills Mall were affected by the flooding of the nearby Cumberland River.

NBC Nightly News profiled the telethon for their Making A Difference segment.

I watched the benefit on GAC (thank you Gac). I happily contributed and the entertainment was great especially Keith Urban. Keith Urban and his wife Nicole Kidman manned the phones for a while. They showed videos of the disaster, much worse than you would think.pictures

Nashville is the center of the music industry. There's gobs of money floating around. I'm sure we will see them rebound faster than anywhere else.

Did NOLA not have a lot of money invested in it?

I don't remember anyone doing this when my New Jersey house was flooded three between 2004 and 2006. Sure wish I got a grant rather than a loan.

And that is awful. You should have gotten some sort of help. Do you begrudge these people help? Just asking!

I am still waiting to hear Pat Robertson's opinion on the floods in Tennessee before I contribute. I want to make sure that God is not mad at the people of Tennessee for anything, like voting against Obama. Because if God is mad at them I do not want to cross him and contribute. Come on Pat, tell us what God is thinking. And about Louisiana too. Tell us Pat. We are waiting.

Actually, like NY and LA, Nashville is a heavily democratic city.

However, it's interesting that liberal progressives so freely come to this thread to demonstrate their character. Thanks.

Or lack of character is so typical.

The tone of some of the comments here is very disapointing and not in character for most of the people who usually post. What is essential to remember is that a great American City has suffered an precedented tragedy and some people have lost everything they own. We should all help out in any way we can. We can got back to hating Repugs next week.

I think the people of Tenn. need and deserve help, just like other people who experience hardships.

So much for rugged individualism..aye!... Let's put away these fallacies and be our brother's keeper.

People who lost everything they owned don't care about all the stupid, petty politicization going on here.

I don't understand the prejudice and mean comments that some people have chosen to make in the wake of our terrible flood. As a Nashville resident, it amazes me that people have such opinions of our city and our state. Our city is full of art, music, great food, parks, and culture. It is far from the "redneck, tea party headquarters" that some people seem to think it is. I have been so amazed and proud of my city during this disaster. Everyone has helped out and done their part, from rescuing stranded people and pets by boat, volunteering, conserving the last of our water supply, etc. The truth is that people need help. Our city never floods and most don't have flood insurance. Thousands have lost their homes and jobs. The flood didn't care who voted which way or who has what political affiliation, so the rest of us shouldn't care either.

It is obvious the people who choose to make unkind comments or spread judgement have never been to Nashville.

To all affected Tennesseans, we have most all of the counties on the Disaster Relief Aid approved and FEMA is moving into local areas, ie. in Wilson County, they are taking up residence in the Prime Outlet Mall. You need to assess your damage, take pictures, call your insurance company, then call your local emergency management agency and report your damage, they may or may not come out. They will tell you where you need to report to your local FEMA offices (give them a few days to get set up). FEMA will give you your papers that you will need to fill out. Don't worry about missing something, they check you in and, when you leave, someone will check you out and if you missed something, they will point it out! Be patient and, in the meantime, don't forget if you need help, call your local churches and community support groups or the Red Cross. If you have lost a pet, please contact your local shelter and pound in case they show up somewhere downriver. A horse was found 14 miles downriver 2 days ago, he's fine and home! If you can, keep donating to your charity of choice and don't be shy about checking on your neighbors.

I feel for these people but as log as they continue to Bash Obama, the Federal Govt, empathy and vote Republican, they will have to look somewhere else for money. I contributed to the relief for New O'rleans and Haiti. Nashville is going to have to wait.

Nashville went for Obama big time in 2008 and, for now at least, has Democratic majorities in both houses of its legislature. Democratic governor, as well. Hmmm... You don't seem real concerned with facts... say, are you a Republican? You just wrote off a city of 1.5 million - the city where sit-ins were invented in the 60s. Our rednecks get lots of coverage for their outlandish statements and positions because Media loves a car wreck. But we are a Blue city. Besides all that, it's hard to believe anyone who places a value on suffering based on the victim's political leanings has the 'gnads to present himself as a progressive. For shame.

my sincere apologies to the both of you and to the people of Nashville. Seriously, I will send them some funds this week. Like so many, I fall for the stereotypes and I should know better.
I guess the Harold Ford Jr. incident left a bad taste in my mouth I didn't care for the man but race bating campaign ads was uncalled for. Hope you understand

For those that can not help directly with the relief effort in Tennessee, please sent a prayer of love for them. tks....

Nashville is a big DNC area.
08:47 AM on 05/11/2010
So next time there is help needed we should get the political affiliation of the area before making our decision as to whether to donate help? What the h.e.l.l. is wrong with 'you" people.
