PHOENIX — A city official says Phoenix could possibly lose hotel and convention center business worth about $90 million over the next five years because of fallout from Arizona's new immigration law.

The law has attracted international attention as well as calls for tourists and businesses to boycott Arizona.

A deputy city manager who is monitoring the issue – David Krietor – says city and tourism officials in Phoenix have compiled a "watch list" tracking the potential fallout. The list includes four organizations that have canceled events and more than a dozen groups that have expressed concerns about the new law.

The $90 million figure represents the estimated amount of money that those groups' members would spend in the region. Some events are scheduled to take place this year, while others are booked as far out at 2015.

By next year this law will be all over America and AZ will be a footnote. Then they will have to boycott America.
01:42 AM on 05/20/2010
Well, I hope AZ retaliates against LA. They need to boycott LA and cut off their electricity and make them buy it somewhere else. THAT will cost a bundle too since LA gets over 25% of its power from AZ. I hope that LA enjoys the dark and sweats it butt off.

The unintended consequences of this boycott:

Increased unemployment in the immigrant community due to layoffs in the hospitality, and other travel related industries, waiters, dish washers, maids, etc

We all want comprhension immigration reform. We are all for that! If Arizona goes against our Constitution, it breaks the Law! Right? So were is it any different than a ilegal immigrant breaking our laws? The Law is for all, not just for the Powerful or the few! If this immigration bill is unconstitutional, than Ariz. broke our Laws! Yet, that is ok if u are one of the minority that said U wanted to enforce this bill. Kind of like Bush/Chaney rewrote the laws so torture was legal for THEM to do it. But , the constitution wasn't rewrote to allow this bill to be legal!

Come on, you can't enter the country without papers. Like every country in the world. The constitution is not a free pass to break our laws.

Enforcing the law is not illegal. If illegals were so much in support of the law, they wouldn't be here, now would they?

If the Federal government would just do it’s job, this law would have never been needed!

Why are’t employers arrested for hiring illegal workers?

Here is the truth.

To be legal an employer only has to request a Social Security card, photocopy it and keep it in the employees file. Fake SS cards are very easy to get. If the employer does not run it thru E-Verify, there is no way to tell if it is fake. So as long as the employer has a SS card photocopy for the employee on file, he cannot be prosecuted.

Social Security Administration sends each employer a “no match” letter at the end of the year if the Name on the card dose not match the number, BUT REQUIRES NO ACTION from the employer to correct it!

That is the truth, read our own governments website:
http://www.ssa.gov/employer/noMatchNotices.htm

Making E-Verify mandatory and enforcing Social Security Administration no match letters would solve the problem!

E-verify is the law in AZ.

Arizona is a cesspool of extreme conservatism. It's quite disgusting. Phoenix shouldn't be surprised at the massive fallout. They have their governor to thank for that.

I think you are missing the point. It is not a right vs left issue. Bush and McCain supported amnesty and Reagan signed one. The GOP likes cheap workers, but why do Progressive leaders, who are supposed to be the champions of average American workers, support illegal immigrants who depress their wages and take their jobs?

It is more a Elite vs Working Class issue. It is average American workers hurt most by illegal low wage workers.

And if you look at polling, support for the AZ law is much larger than the right wing, or Obama would not have won

MSNBC (not rightwing) and Chris Mathews (not rightwing) reported that 60% of Americans approve of this law or want it stronger.

Here is the poll he was quoting:

CBS News/New York Times (not rightwing) poll on AZ new Immigration Law:

It goes “to far” - 34%
It is “about right” - 51%
Should be stronger - 9%
Don’t know – 4%

It has nothing to do with Polling or what the people want! If this Bill is unconstitutional, than Arizona an those who wrote this Bill Broke the Law! They are NO better than a ilegal immigrant that broke our law! It is that simple! Laws are the same rather your a State Att; General/Governor or a ilegal alien or a crimenal! U have committed a crime, because U broke our laws!

What I find interesting about this poll is that it doesn't give a percentage of how many of these people were white. I would like to see the same poll given to Latino and Hispanic Americans and see how the numbers come out.

Good point!

Legalize and tax.

Helps in many ways, saves on law enforcement, adds revenue!

I have to say, being a white woman married to a hispanic man I have learned alot about racism in the USA-not just Arizona. Employers treat them as if they are dogs- because they think they can get away with it. It is horrible. We all need to realize that we need to be nice to each other. There are just as many "Americans" living generations on welfare as there are hardworking "immigrants". If we all did one nice thing a day- for someone else- what would the world be like? This land belongs to God. Everything we say and do will be judged one day....Can't we all just get along???!!!!

My, my. Discrimination gets expensive, doesn't it? Deal with it, Arizona.

Or just have John "Finish the dang fence" McCain ask his heiress wife for the money to replace the millions that will be lost from this horrible policy.
