Celtics DESTROY Cavs, Put LeBron On Brink Of Elimination

Celtics Cavs

TOM WITHERS   05/12/10 12:35 AM ET   AP

CLEVELAND — The Boston Celtics pushed the Cleveland Cavaliers dangerously close to an early start to the Summer of LeBron.

Ray Allen scored 25 points, Rajon Rondo scored all of his 16 in the second half and the Celtics, once thought too old to challenge for another title, beat LeBron James and the Cavs 120-88 in Game 5 on Tuesday night to move within one win of knocking the NBA's top team from the playoffs.

Paul Pierce added 21 and Kevin Garnett 18 for the Celtics, who handed the Cavs their worst home playoff loss in history and can end Cleveland's season with a win in Game 6 on Thursday night.

"We cannot come back here," Garnett said. "We have to think this is our Game 7 coming up and we cannot afford to have the best team in the league have a Game 7 on their floor. Just not possible."

James, the league's two-time MVP on the verge of an expected trip into free agency on July 1, had an atrocious game. He scored 15 points on 3-of-14 shooting, a startling outing for the 25-year-old who has been playing with a sprained elbow.

Because of James' uncertain future, Game 5 may have been his last at home for Cleveland and it has set up Game 6 as the most important in franchise history: Win and force Game 7 on Sunday in Cleveland; lose and maybe watch James, the local kid trying to deliver this city its first pro championship since 1964, leave for good.

Rondo, coming off a 29-point, 18-rebound, 13-assist performance in Game 4, was held without a point in the first half as the Cavs concentrated their defense on stopping the point guard from penetrating into the paint. He finally got loose in the third, scoring 12 as the Celtics opened a 21-point lead.

Boston went up by 24 in the fourth, sending battered Cleveland fans toward the exits.

James finally checked out with 3:58 left and the Celtics leading by 27. He shrugged his shoulders and slapped hands with Cleveland's coaches and teammate Shaquille O'Neal, who had 21 points and afterward stated the obvious.

"It's plain and simple," said O'Neal, who came to Cleveland determined "to win a ring for the King." "We've got to win two in a row. We've got to man up. I've been in this situation before."

Before the game, Celtics coach Doc Rivers said his team would not change its strategy.

"We are who we are," Rivers said. "We don't need anyone to play hero basketball. We have to be a team. We're good when we're a team."

And through five games, the Celtics have been the better one. Because of injuries, Boston, two years removed from its 17th NBA championship, never found its groove in the regular season.

The Celtics got it now.

They've outperformed the top-seeded Cavs in almost every aspect of the game, outrunning and outhustling a younger team that with the addition of O'Neal, Antawn Jamison and Anthony Parker, was built for the postseason but has yet to show it's serious about winning a title.

"We've done nothing," Rivers said. "We've won three games but we've got to win four."

Allen opened the second half with back-to-back 3s, pushing Boston's six-point halftime lead to 12 and deflating already nervous Cleveland fans, who have seen so many of their teams choke in pressure situations before.

In the first half, the Cavs did a brilliant job on Rondo, who didn't score his first points until the 9:47 mark of the third quarter. But by then, the Celtics had opened their double-digit lead and with James misfiring from the outside, Cleveland was in big trouble.

James missed his first seven shots before he got loose on a leak-out dunk with 6:15 left in the third.

Rivers described the first four games of this our-turn-your-turn series as "rhythmless." That characterized much of the first half, as defense prevailed and both teams struggled to find good looks.

The Cavs led 29-21 when, with Rondo on the bench, Boston's Big Three of Allen, Garnett and Pierce did all the scoring in a 16-0 run that put the Celtics ahead by eight, sending a chill through the arena as Cleveland fans pondered the thought of facing a season-saving Game 6 in Boston.

James shifted into attack mode and got to the free-throw line four times in the final 3:51 as the Cavs pulled within 50-44 at halftime.

NOTES: Kentucky coach John Calipari, a friend of James, sat courtside with James' agent, Leon Rose – just a few seats from Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. ... Rivers was asked if Rondo's postseason breakout signifies a passing of the Celtics' torch from Boston's Big Three. "I'm just trying to get them to pass the ball to each other," he joked. "That torch stuff, I'm going to leave that alone. If they pass it to each other, I'm good." ... The Celtics-Cavs showdown is the only live series following four-game sweeps of the Jazz, Spurs and Hawks in the other conference semifinals. "I'm very surprised," Allen said. "I don't know what happened with Atlanta." ... Joe Tait, the Cavs' radio voice for 38 seasons, and Boston Globe reporter Jackie MacMullan will receive the Curt Gowdy Media Awards at the Basketball Hall of Fame this summer. MacMullan is the first woman to be honored.

LeBron will never win a title because he's too concerned about his own image and his marketability. He does not possess that hunger for a title like Bird, Magic, Jordan, and even Kobe. He might go down as the greatest player never to win an NBA title.

I was there at the Garden when LJ played his first game against the Celts. He was straight out of high school and it showed. He stood out on the court and watched the game go by, he looked lost. Hey, he kind of looked like that last night. Deja vue all over again.

Come to Atlanta LeBron, we have a young TEAM that needs a star to win a championship. Without LeBron, Cleveland couldn't make the playoffs, Atlanta can, NY Knicks can't and Chicago is just Cleveland with more violence.

Good luck with that. Atlanta needs a strong center. They have a good power forward unless they want to trade him.

Between LeBron's choices of teams, NY Knicks, Chicago, Miami, who has the best center and most talent to surround LeBron for a championship? NY needs a rebuild their franchise, Chicago has Rose and 4 unknown starters, Miami has Wade and 4 unknown starters. Atlanta should release Joe Johnson (free agent) because if you're going to pay someone that wants LeBron money (100 million) you should just pay LeBron $100 million.

Regardless of Lebron's poor performance, Coach Brown is inept and doesn't know what to do with his stacked roster. The Cavs looked like they were at their best when Shaq was hurt and Hickson started. Now Hickson sees barely any minutes. Big Z sees barely any minutes. And the Human mop Varejao backs up Shaq. Brown cannot manage the minutes with his Bench players. With Shaq in the lineup they seem to get worse because it makes them play even slower. They are a young team that can play a much faster pace but they are one of the slowest offensive teams in the league.

In Contrast, look how well Phil Jackson manages the Lakers who lack a decent bench. He's only using a 8 player rotation and it gets the job done. Brown is using like 11 or 12 player rotation and they fall apart during 7 games series. Cavs are a regular season team. Since during the season, coaches can't make those certain adjustments game to game like Doc Rivers has done brilliantly in this series.

It's not over but maybe all the sports columnists and commentators should take a step back and think about how stupid it is to keep building Lebron up as some god when basketball is a team sport. You need good players who play well together as well as a good coach who leads. Cleveland is lacking in the coach department and leadership.

That was the point of the difference between the regular season and the playoff season. Adjustments. Brown seems to be scrambling for what should have been thought out already.

Two players who have been over-rated through no fault of their own are Delonte West and Mo Williams. These are not Scottie Pippen type players. And adding Shaq in anticipation of a comparable match up with Dwight was a little premature.

I agree that Coach Brown is incompetent. He should have been fired last year.

You make some valid points. He (Brown) panicked. But even if he had rotated differently, when Allen, Garnett and Big Baby are hitting 50+% of their shots, the Cavs and any other team will most likely lose. Mo can't guard Allen or Rondo. If Brown benches him, they lose a valuable trey-shooter. Jamison can't match-up with Garnett. Shaq and Z are too big and slow to guard him, what can Brown do if KG is hot?

Magic will run into the same problems if Allen and KG are still on...Now, the LAkers match-up much better, because Kobe can guard Allen; Gasol can off-set KG; Artest will handle Pierce...Rondo will score; that's the only player the Lakes have no answer for...It'll be interesting to see ROndo and Jameer go at it...I expect a draw. THough if Jameer gets open and makes a bunch of treys, he could be the difference-maker.

I'd love to see Lakers - Celtics rematch. Time for Lakers Revenge. And I'm glad Boston has proved all the sports pundits wrong. They wrote them off 5 months ago but I knew that was premature. The regular season is way too long and older more experienced teams seem to get bored during the regular season. They aren't going to bust their butts when winning the regular season means diddly squat. Even the Lakers were bored during the regular season. Good thing they've turned it on when it matters most.

A couple of years of college ball could have shored up his game. Lebron does not seem to realize yet the nature of the playoff season as opposed to the regular season. If anything, a higher level of coaching would be appropriate for him as well. A lot of the passes he made last night seem gratuitous. Lebron needs to take charge, establish his presence, then the passes would mean something.
The injury may be limiting him, they've been real quiet about that.

I think the injury has a Lot to do with it. People forget that superstars are still only human. Besides, why would james talk about that with free agency at the door.

His injury seems like a convenient excuse. Lebron looked uninterested last night. They were showing replays of him standing around on offense just watching his team throw up brick after brick. Maybe his plan was to leave Cleveland all along. Championship or not. He lacks the killer instinct and competitive nature that Magic, Bird, MJ, Kobe, Young Shaq had and have to win championship. Lebron is too worried about being marketable and building a billion dollar empire.

Ok. Then why would he, with free agency beckoning play the way he did last night? Did you see how D. Wade busted his butt to stay in the playoffs?

Nice. Basketball for years now has been so much about celebrity and one-man showmanship, with fans and commentators and even officials fawning all over whichever individual is this week's "greatest ever". It's great to see once in a while when a TEAM wins.

Sad day for Cleveland. Lebron really needs to become more aggressive next game. I was shocked at how nonchalant he looked at times last night. If he is going to be considered one of the best of all time, he has to at least put up a fight, because last night was the complete opposite of what a superstar is all about.
