Google, Verizon Tablet In The Works (PICTURES): Is It An 'iPad Killer'?

Google Tablet

Verizon's Chief Executive Lowell McAdam says that Verizon and Google are working together on developing a tablet PC, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The collaboration is part of Verizon's effort to "catch up with" AT&T, which exclusively carries the iPhone and iPad, by developing additional mobile devices that can connect to the Verizon Wireless network.

The Wall Street Journal writes,

Tablets are part of the "next big wave of opportunities," Mr. McAdam said in an interview. He said the work on a tablet is part of a deepening relationship between the largest U.S. wireless carrier by subscribers and Google, which has carved out a space in mobile devices with its Android operating system.

"We're looking at all the things Google has in its archives that we could put on a tablet to make it a great experience," he said.

Little is known about the Google tablet, although earlier this year Google CEO Eric Schmidt revealed that a Google PC was in development.

According to the New York Times, Schmidt "told friends at a recent party in Los Angeles about the new device, which would exclusively run the Android operating system."

Rumors have been circulating that Verizon may get a CDMA version of the iPhone sometime later this year, but, as TechCrunch notes, McAdam's mention of a "deepening relationship" between Verizon and Google suggests that a Verizon iPhone may still be a long ways off.

Check out several pictures posted to the official Chromium website which offer renderings of what a Google tablet might look like. Chromium has also posted a video demo (see below) showing how the "iPad Killer" might work. Could the Google tablet be a threat to the iPad? Vote below!

I'm waiting on the awesome Notion Ink ADAM. It's innovation for the 21st Century.

I have an iPod touch for music and games. I'd like, an iPhone, but I don't want AT&T, so I'll just have a regular old cell phone. Even if it means carrying two devices.

As far as an iPad is concerned, I will never get one for the same reason I don't carry around a netbook or laptop. I don't need to. It just seems unnecessary.

i hope it's just as good if not better, bc i don't want to deal with AT&T anymore..

I just hope this wont stay as a unicorn device only. If this is for real, then I'm sure we're looking on the next ipad contender. Impressions. http://2su.de/wrU

Other companies have to copy apple in order to simply compete. It may be better. But it is only better by imitating.

The big question is can Google produce any operational software that can smoothly run these devices? As of today Chrome is still unstable and has lost a lot of market share. http://www.digitalundivide.com

Yeah right. How many times have we heard Google saying their phones will be the iPhone killer and we've yet to see anything that resembles killing?

Their isn't any point in sites posting "ipad killer" just like when sites posted iphone killer, they are too late, the device may be better but won't kill an apple product anytime soon.

I still have yet to use a tablet so I recognize my opinion isn't worth much, but I just don't understand the appeal. I don't want to have to use my hands blocking the screen and smudging it to do tasks that a simple mouse gesture could handle. Typing on glass doesn't seem enjoyable (I already do it on my phone and while there is a learning curve, I still prefer a physical keyboard). Thus, you'll have to carry around accessories like attachable keyboard and a stand to point it at you for extensive word processing anyways. The hardware is also unlikely to be powerful enough to handle graphics intensive games, but I'd like to see what would be developed for it to be compelling enough to buy. As an e-reader also not as nice to look at an LCD than e-ink.

The one use I agree that a tablet sounds great for is graphic design and photoshop. I would be tempted to get one if it seemed like a good way to get into drawing. So other than art (which is a great reason), what exactly is a tablet for that my laptop can't do better or just as well already? Any insight appreciated, I'm not just trying to be dismissive.

Actually, if you define tablet as iPad, then you will have the limitations that you mention. However, there are other tablets besides iPad. The advantage of the tablet form is for vertical applications - any field where people mainly stand such as health care industry. A tablet that has handwriting recognition or voice recognition would obviously be preferable to keyboard input. The type of power that you specify will not come from a $500 machine of very limited capacity. So you would have to pay the cost of a quality full fledge laptop. The advantage that the iPad has is that it is cheap and that it is relatively light weight. The disadvantage is that the type of fine lines you require in drawing you can't produce with your finger. Also, you can't load photoshop on it. You are limited to the Apps from iTunes. The Lenovo Thinkpad Convertible Xtablets will probably do everything that you want but at an entry price of over $2100.

amazing. no other company , but apple is innovative.. so out of jealousy they have to come out with the so called killers. rather the killers that don't.. People want the originator not the knock off company

First the iPod Killer.
Then the iPhone Killer.
Now the iPad Killer.
Want to to have a failed tech device?
Have some media dweeb call it a "Killer".

Let's just say Google IS the iPad killer. After iPad is sufficiently destroyed, who then becomes the Google Killer??
