FanHouse:

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines -- Manny Pacquiao. Congressman in the Republic of the Philippines.

The current WBO welterweight boxing champion and seven-time title holder scored the most personally satisfying win of his life in his birthplace in the country's national elections early Tuesday morning, soundly defeating a heavily favored candidate, Roy Chiongbian, from an entrenched billionaire clan to win a seat in the Philippines Congress representing the province of Sarangani on the island of Mindanao.

I think this is a sad, sad situation for Filipinos to have elected a relatively uneducated (grade school dropout), politically inexperienced person as a congressman. Don't get me wrong folks because I like Manny Pacquiao just fine as a boxer for his prowess and power in the ring. But with the major problems of widespread abject poverty, massive corruption, rampant political graft, a broken legal system and political instability with militants in the Philippines, I don't see how electing incompetent people into political office will ever help the country grow and improve.

Filipinos don't seem to care about education, qualifications or competency when electing many of their officials. As long as the person running for office is either filthy rich, some bi-racial actor, actress or a singer (talented or not), a beauty queen or a sports athlete, people will blindly vote for him/her. Voting in the Philippines appear to be more of a popularity contest than electing better qualified individuals of character, education and substance.

Herb, one good outcome of Filipinos electing a balut and cigarette vendor to office is good for my FOREX REMITTANCE FROM MY PARENTS.

The more these ding-dungs run Philippines the better for my FOREX REMITTANCE. The more Filipinos get poorer the more I become richer, relatively speaking.

I do not care about Filipinos anymore. They are educated but has not learned from education. They must love history because they keep repeating their pathetic history over and over again since Lapu-lapu

LOL...hello Renato, thanks for your post. Let's hope that "Noynoy" Aquino, as the new president, will be able to make some changes to the status quo. He appears to be a rather "clean" politician (so far) from the Aquino legacy family. The Philippines is such a lovely country with very warm, kind-hearted and friendly people. There's rampant poverty there but there's also much natural beauty.

I've visited the country at least seven times and my wonderful and very loving wife of 10 years is a native born Filipina from Mindanao. So as a Westerner, I've had direct experiences with the embedded Filipino culture and the entrenched mindsets...most good but some bad. The country could prosper so much better, but Filipinos just cannot seem to get it together culturally, historically, politically and financially.

Well, good luck with your FOREX business...which we'll likely use soon to send over a couple of "balikbayan" boxes. :-)

Filipinos are in favor of Manny Pacquiao's anti-blood testing. Manny Pacquiao is Filipino's inspiration and example. BUT WHEN U.S. EMBASSY COMES CALLING FOR U.S. VISA TO AMERICA. Filipinos anti-blood testing goes out the window. They line up before St. Luke Hospital for blood-testing.

DUDE!

I just wonder if Manny Pacquiao knew how many zeroes there are in a million?

Look with Manny Pacquiao's financial and educational background, Manny went to boxing because that is how far his brain can bring him. BRAWN! He cannot imagine he just lost 900,000,000.00 Pesos where a daily laborer can only earn 435.00 pesos a day over blood testing.

I still question Pacquiao would give up 900,000,000.00 that is 20,000,000 million dollars which he has not seen since he was a kid for just PRINCIPLE? Like what he said "something is taken out of me?" REALLY?

How could a low-IQ Pacquiao know if Olympic style blood testing would give him away from Las Vegas style testing? TOTALLY, BEYOND MY COMPREHENSION.

I would have myself clubbered in split second into one round for $20,000,000.00

Boxing is a sports of choice by Top Philippine Government Officials? All the way down to clueless oblivious Philippine media journalists?

IT IS NO WONDER PHILIPPINES IS IN DEEP TROUBLE! MAY GOD BLESS YOU. Nope, I take it back. GOD HAS NOT BLESSED THE PHILIPPINES FOR THE PAST 480 YEARS AND COUNTING. Better for non-Christian neighbours they are better off than Philippines in short span of time.

THINK ABOUT IT

"Too bad for the intelligent Filipinos." - Ron1951 below

Filipinos intelligent? Hmmm. That is original.

Intelligent Filipinos love low-IQ, kindergarten-drop-out, academically not-supported sports whose skills are honed in prison rumble and street brawls?

Too bad for the intelligent Filipinos. History has shown time and time again how many actors and celebrities have been successful as politicians for doing anything but taking money. What a shame for such a beautiful country. Last time I visited Cebu, I could have taken a newspaper from 20 years ago, changed the first name of the Estrada in charge, and the rest of the news would be the same.
