Onetime-Longshots Sestak, Halter May Unseat Incumbent Senate Democrats

Campaigns

EDITOR'S NOTE: The story below includes references to polling conducted by the firm Research 2000. The reliability and accuracy of Research 2000's polling has since been called into serious question by a report published in June 2010 by a group of statistical analysts.

Even a month ago, political insiders scoffed at the idea that progressive challengers could unseat Democratic Sens. Arlen Specter (Penn.) and Blanche Lincoln (Ark.).

But fundraising and poll numbers have shifted dramatically in both states, and now both incumbents could well lose their party's nominations in primary elections on Tuesday.

Buffeted by waves of anti-Washington sentiment, both Specter and Lincoln have surrendered their early advantages to Pennsylvania Rep. Joe Sestak and Arkansas Lt. Gov. Bill Halter. A series of polls this week showed Sestak pulling ahead of Specter in Pennsylvania. The latest, from Suffolk University, has Sestak leading 49 percent to 40 percent.

Lincoln's campaign has acknowledged that she will likely have to face Halter in a runoff -- and Halter could win: New polling from Research 2000/Daily Kos has him trailing Lincoln 46 percent to 37 percent, with 11 percent undecided.

In short, Tuesday could well be "a very big day," as Politico's Ben Smith put it.

The Washington Post's Greg Sargent thinks likewise, writing:

To be sure, the battle lines are blurred between the two races. Labor has poured millions of dollars into the campaign of Lincoln's challenger. Meanwhile the big unions are backing Specter, and Sestak's backing on the left is mostly netroots-driven. But the overall storyline is clear: The two candidates backed by the Dem establishment, both of whom were thought to be sure things only weeks ago, are now in trouble.

If Sestak wins and Halter does force Lincoln into a runoff, Dems in D.C. will ascribe it to a generalized anti-incumbent fervor that's sweeping the land. Surely there will be some truth to that. But surely some of the credit should also go to the people who maintained, in the face of enormous skepticism, that Specter and Lincoln are not invulnerable, just as the media chatters nonstop about the Tea Partyers.

Politico's Charlie Mahtesian puts it in even more dramatic terms:

Never mind Rep. Alan Mollohan's (D-W.V.) primary defeat Tuesday. Avert your gaze from Sen. Bob Bennett's (R-Utah) loss last Saturday. The biggest and most consequential elections don't take place until next week, May 18, a date that ranks as the most important of the election calendar so far.

Just four states -- Arkansas, Kentucky, Oregon and Pennsylvania -- will go to the polls that day, but the ballot will be packed with marquee elections that will provide the broadest and most detailed data to date about the toxicity of the political environment and the intensity of anti-establishment fury. [...]

Congress itself stands to be immediately altered. By the end of the week, two more veteran senators could be torched by the anti-establishment bonfires that consumed Mollohan and Bennett within three days of each other. The Democratic House majority might be pared by two seats.

President Obama's endorsement of Sens. Arlen Specter was the kiss of death. I'm looking forward to the President campaigning for Democrats this fall.

Time to get rid of Arlen Specter and replace him with a true progressive liberal and a man of integrity, Joe Sestak. The polls are showing that Sestak is as plucky, and lucky, just as he was when he ran for the House (also without any help from the party machinery.) I am looking forward to Arlen Specter's peaceable retirement. I hope he will be hounded by history's view of his odious role in bringing on the neo con wreckage done to a Supreme Court from the guys he championed and voted for as head of the Senate Judiciary Committee: Sam Alito, Chief Justice Roberts and that complete embarassment of an idiot, Clarence Thomas.

I will be ecstatic to see the last of Specter and Lincoln. We need to clean house of 20th century conservatism- I don't care what side of the aisle they're on. The Cold War is over, and the 21st century requires nuance, diplomacy and critical thinking abilities.

Specter will go down in flames because the voters in PA know him to be merely an opportunistic politician who doesn't care about the voters just maintaining his seat. In Arkansas the DINO Lincoln will also go down in flames because her constituents realize that she is merely a Republican in Democratic clothing. She has no loyalty to her party and very little to her constituents.

Joe Sestak will beat Specter in the PA democratic primary because he is by far the better man and the better candidate. Sestak is a true liberal and a reliable supporter of a progressive agenda. He has been a dependable voice for the people, for labor, and for healthcare. He is not someone whose positions change with the political winds.

We have personal experience with Sestak's office and his congressional aides which was very positive. His office is well run and efficient. It is responsive, intelligent, energized and focused. By contrast, Specter's office is half asleep. Specter's answers to my letters over the years have been so lame as to be laughable. When I wrote about Clarence Thomas, torture, the Iraq War, national healthcare, corporate welfare, bad mine safety his answers were so stupid and off point. He is not on the same page as the democratic majority of PA. He supported Iraq and pushed through the Military Commissions Act. He supported Bush's appointment of that idiot for Attorney General Gonzales and his right hand man, John "torture is okay" Wu.

Rep. Sestak, as a retired two star Admiral, knows the code of honor and military law. He knows the constitution and the Geneva Convention. Arlen may be a lawyer but he was a waterboy for George W Bush, and part of his inner circle. I am so glad I have a chance to vote in favor of Sestak, commander of an aircraft carrier battle group in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Well thought out and detailed argument for Sestak, unlike most of the posts I've seen. Fanned and faved for a well documented argument.

Thank you, grandpa. My husband and I got to know Sestak's work and his superb staff from interactions involving various projects in the state. We were so impressed that when he decided to run for the Senate, despite not being supported by the White House, both of us were very hopeful he would win. It has been tough to have the democratic establishment go against the base of the party in this state for the sake of a deal Biden made with Arlen. I had grown so disgusted with Arlen Specter over the years that I just groaned when he switched parties. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Sestak will take it. We need him in Washington. He has tremendous integrity and executive skill.

It is certain the policial landscape will be turned upsidedown come November (tea baggers don't get too worked up). But can we at least get some financial reform passed before the "just say no" types possibly get in. And at least we know "Drill baby Drill" is done as we knew it. And can we try to elect candidates on both sides who aren't so cozy with business and the chamber of commerce....is that too much to ask for?

Your conclusions are misleading and are not supported by facts. Bob Bennett is a product of a corrupt undemocratic one party Teabagger state system. The Utah caucuses provides for a few hundred hand picked delegates to speak for a several million electorate.

Bob Bennett benefited from this corrupt arrangement until he was ousted. He never sought to change the system, now he is complaining. Besides both he and Arlen Specter are about the same age. It is time that these two gentlemen retire.

Arlen Specter ‘s case is more straight forward. He is an opportunistic Teabagger, plain and simple. He spent over 40 years in the Teabagger party. Did you really expect his opportunistic party changing ploy to work?

Blanche Lincoln is more a Teabagger than a Democrat. She may squeak past her challenger, but I doubt it.

Basic analysis would show that all the fore mentioned candates are flawd and that their demise has nothing to do with Teabagger rage.

This November, unless things change DRAMATICALLY between now and then, the worst letter to have next to ones name on the ballot won't be a R or and D, but the I for incumbent!

The vast majority of our elected folks in Washington seem to have long since forgotten they work for us, the folks that voted them into office, and not their party leaders, who seem to have alos forgotten that they work for us, and not the deep pockets of special interests far too numerous to list

Time for fresh blood and those with new ideas to come into Senate. Specter needs to retire and Lincoln showed who she really represents. I am tired of these old Senators who are out of touch with their constituents. We need to move this country forward and not look back.

The democratic party has allowed Blanche L. to masquerade long enought as a democrat. Her arrogant ingratitude to the people who elected her has gone unchallenged until now.

Good, there is no doubt...this is an anti-incumbent years and who can blame the American people when the Senate has failed completely to govern properly...I would much rather have new Dems facing the GOP then old Dems who are going to lose as incumbents...the new candidates have a shot.

There's no doubt that entrenched politicians on both sides of the aisle are in it for themselves and their lobbyists. And, while I share the outrage against a do nothing Congress (been that way for a while) we need to be sure the cure isn't worse than the disease.

I think voters must make it very clear to whomever they elected that we put you in and we can take you out. For decades, except for presidential elections, voter turnout has been minimal. People can't be bothered then complain about government not meeting the needs of the people. And, some of the people some of the time get it wrong! For example, the racist comments of too many tea partiers dilutes any common sense goals they may have.

If we want our kids and grandkids to have the same opportunities the post WWII generation had ,we need to make it darn clear that anyone who doesn't serve in the public interest won't last two terms in D.C.
