Author Solutions Creates Self-Publishing Imprints With Hay House, Harlequin And Nelson

Author Solutions has signed its third deal with a traditional publisher to create a self-publishing division, inking an agreement with Hay House to create Balboa Press. According to Hay House CEO Reid Tracy, the publisher receives "thousands of manuscripts annually, but we can publish only 100 products a year."

Vanity publishing and self-publishing are the same thing; one's just the derogatory term for what is also being called "independent publishing." As long as there are no illusions about what "publishing" constitutes (a traditional publisher invests in your book, a "self-publishing" company makes you pay for everything), I think this is a better option than simply finding the cheapest book printing house. People who self-publish want to get their books in the hands of people who will read them. It seems that having imprints with Balboa will make that easier. I wouldn't browse Lulu's self-published list but I am likely to browse Balboa's because I'm interested in Hay House-type mind/body/spirit books.

This is VANITY publishing, not self-publishing. Check out the prices and compare them to self-publishing operations like Lulu. It's usury.
