Heinz Ketchup Lowers Salt: First Tweak In 40 Years

Heinz Ketchup Sodium Salt

Heinz, which holds a 60 percent share of the ketchup market, is tweaking its formula for the first time in 4 decades.

The AP reports:

Heinz has cooked up a new recipe for its iconic ketchup. The Pittsburgh-based condiment maker has started making batches of ketchup using a recipe with less salt. The new version will hit store shelves this summer.

Company officials say the 15 percent cut in sodium is the first significant change of formula in nearly 40 years.

The New York Post has more:

Heinz spokeswoman Jessica Jackson said, "The catalyst . . . came from the changing needs of our consumers and our commitment to health and wellness." Jackson said the company had been planning the change for about two years. But it is coming just as Mayor Bloomberg and other politicians are leaning on big food companies to kick the salt. Heinz was one of 16 major food manufacturers that last month signed onto the National Salt Reduction Initiative, a plan led by Bloomberg to get companies to cut back on the salt in their products.

Heinz says the new recipe has been widely tested across the country, and gave some insight into the recipe revision:

The new Heinz ketchup recipe will contain about 15 percent less sodium, dropping the amount per tablespoon from 190 to 160 milligrams. Heinz will also make changes to the secret spices. "As we reduced the sodium, we rebalanced the special secret spices," [spokeswoman] Jackson said.

The revised ketchup formula won't be marked on the bottle with any new graphic or logo, but consumers can inspect the back label and nutrition information to determine whether they're getting the revised lower-sodium version.

The American Medical Association stated, "Because the composition of HFCS and sucrose are so similar, particularly on absorption by the body, it appears unlikely that HFCS contributes more to obesity or other conditions than sucrose."

HFCS has gotten such a bad reputation lately and while some opinions are well-founded, some are based on what people have observed in the media that twists stories to make themselves sound more interesting.

HFCS causes obesity just as sugar does. I am not trying to state that the average American's daily intake of sugar and HFCS is acceptable or not harmful. I am simply trying to say that HFCS is no worse than what you will find in many other products that are making no effort to reshape their salt levels. Heinz may be able to get away with removing sodium without trouble, but removing the sweet taste from the ketchup would simply alienate long-standing customers that would be unable to eat a ketchup without some sort of sugar. Instead, they are doing what they can to make a healthier product.

Great news, Heinz is moving from horribly loaded with salt and sugar to badly loaded with salt and sugar. I feel healthier, already! (...and for the uneducated and uninformed...HCFS is sugar...and replacing HCFS with another sugar DOES NOT make it healthy!!)

correction HFCS not HCFS

I buy organic because of the HFCS and other bad-for-us ingredients, but I plan this year to try to can my own, maybe even using beets to add a bit of sweetness. Feel free to check in on the blog in the early fall for whether it works and the recipe (if it's a success).

Heinz made a major recipe change when they started using High fructose Corn syrup instead of sugar.
Kudos to Hunts for not using HFCS anymore.

Makes no diff to me, I only consume the low-sodium Heinz ketchup brand in the first place. If I want ketchup I like it more sweet than loaded w/sodium.

So I'm to assume they switched to HFCS before 1980?

sugar water and coloring, don't buy it, don't consume it, don't want it.

This salt restriction thing is getting out of hand. Salt tastes good, and I should be able to consume it to excess if I want to.

what does "health and wellness" have to do with processed ketchup? I bet that stuff is so loaded with sugar...its beyond any health benefits

I hope they still offer the "Heinz" Classic formula...

This reminds me of when Coke tried to fix something that isn't broke. They may mess around and have this blow up in their faces.
08:45 AM on 05/17/2010
The "classic" did not contain HFCS.. There is a *new* brand called Simply Heinz that is made with sugar---tastes just like the kind I had as a kid!!

Just had a glass bottle of Coke the other day... made with sugar, not HFCS... again tastes just like I had as a kid... even made my nose tingle..
